There were two Sabbaths that week that Yeshua died.

The first one occurred on the evening of the crucifixion. Luke 23:52–54; Mark 15:42

Yeshua is buried at the end of preparation day before the Sabbath. He is took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and*laid him in a tomb cut in stone. The*“sacrifice”*and*“festival”*could*not begin*until the*sun*had*set*on the*western horizon*and*three stars*were*seen*in the*darkness of the heavens*that*occurred*on the*“first day”*after the seventh-day Shabbat*of the*Passover weekend.*

The*fact that Yeshua was*in the*tomb*from*Wednesday evening (eve of Thursday)*until*Saturday evening (eve of Sunday), the*first day, made this*Passover celebration*an*extra three and one-half days*until the*“Counting of the Omer”*could*begin*on the*first day after*the*seventh-day Shabbat of Passover.*

You can not purchase spices after the Sabbath, and yet prepare those spices before the Sabbath.

Mark 16:1*When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.
and
Luke 23:56 56*Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.*On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
Preparation takes time.

Yeshua was crucified on Wednesday and then the high Holy Day [Feast of Unleaven Bread] began Wednesday night at sundown and end at Thursday sundown – which would be the beginning of the Friday, the weekly preparation for weekly Sabbath. This is why the women did not have time between the Sabbaths to anoint him. I do not know how they should be furnished with pestles and mortars and other vessels for pounding mixing and melting spices but I think they bought spices already mixed into an ointment prepared and fitted for the use intended by them. In countries where embalming was in use and where they must buried soon after men had expired and especially in great cities and near them such as Jerusalem there must have been shops or warehouses of apothecaries or embalmers or confectioners where spices of all sorts proper for funeral rites and also bandages and rollers might be had and upon the shortest notice for all sorts of persons according to their several circumstances.

Soon as he had expired Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus came to the place bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes about an hundred pound weight And they took the body of Yeshua and wound it in linen clothes or bandages with spices as the manner of the Jews is to bury*Long ago, after the death family members gathered to ceremoniously prepare the body. The body was cleansed, anointed with oils and spices, and wrapped in a special linen cloth. The anointing and preparing of the body requires a special blend of essential oils and spices. The common essential oils and spices used include sandalwood, myrrh, spikenard, frankincense, fir balsam, myrtle, pine, cypress and spruce with extra virgin olive oil. These oils have been used for hundreds of years for this primary purpose of preparing and purifying the dead. .**Joseph of Arimathea*was the*brother to the father of Yeshua’ mother, Miriam, and the great uncle to Yeshua HaMaschiach (Yeshua the Messiah).*
John 19:38-42*Together,*Joseph and Nicodemus*took the*body of Yeshua and placed Him in a newly cut family tomb. After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a DISCIPLE OF YESHUA, BUT SECRETLY, FOR FEAR OF THE JEWS, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Yeshua; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Yeshua. And NICODEMUS, who at first came to Yeshua by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Yeshua, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Yeshua, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

Is this a variant on the Wednesday crucifixion theory? I've seen this particular dead horse flogged before. Do we need to flog it again in here?

That's because "this" is not true. None of the gospels gives one a Wednesday crucifixion with a Sunday resurrection. It takes a lot of inventive interpretation to get that as well as some considerable arithmetical manipulations.

Nope.. all it takes is following the Feasts of God to see how He fulfills them according to their time frame and schedule... right to the moment that they were being fulfilled in the earthly temple, Yeshua was fulfilling them... He died at the time of the High Priest's lamb was sacrificed. He was resurrected at the time when they gather the wave sheaf from the fields. He ascended to the Heavenly Courts before His Father as First Fruits with His Wave Sheaf at the same time the priests were performing the wave sheaf/first fruits services in the earthly temple. Just like the Holy Spirit descended down upon the disciples and 3000 others during the time of the Pentecost services were being performed in the temple.

1 Cor 5:6 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

That is what the prophetic story foretold in the Feast represents. That is why they are part of the story of redemption. Those feasts Lev 23 reveal the who, what, where, why, and how like a rehearsal until their appointed time. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie.

1 Cor 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming, then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

These are holy convocations that the Lord has set aside as sacred for a reason. For in them you will find out how Yeshua know it was His time. These are a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Yeshua.

For the apostles who seen the fulfillment of the spring feasts, looked forward to the fulfillment of the fall feasts. This might be the reason Paul wrote... Romans 8:19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

The redemption of our body will come with the eighth day of the Feast of Tabernacles. The last feast of the Fall feasts. What a glorious resurrected day that will be.

Actually I always thought that a Friday to Sunday required all the gyrations and inventions and It is not only logical but correct about a high sabbeth anda regular sabbeth.

It's very simple. Graphically it looks like this.

But if you take the words of Jesus himself where he said:

Mat 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

How do you get three days and three nights between Friday and Sunday? Even if you count Friday-Saturday-Sunday as three days you've still only got Friday night and Saturday night (two nights) before Sunday morning.

Luke 23:53-56
Then he took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in a long sheet of linen cloth and laid it in a new tomb that had been carved out of rock. 54 This was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation, as the Sabbath was about to begin.

55 As his body was taken away, the women from Galilee followed and saw the tomb where his body was placed. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.

Mark 16:1-2
Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb.

Friday is the first day, Saturday is the second, and Sunday is the third. That's how one gets three days.

By the way, we have Friday daylight, Saturday starts at sunset. Then we have Saturday night and day. And then Sunday night and morning.

It still seems to be double-counting at least somewhere.

If Jesus said he would spend three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, if he died on Friday then you'd have a small part of Friday pre-sunset (Day 1), Friday sunset - Saturday sunrise (Night 1), Saturday sunrise - Saturday sunset (Day 2), Saturday sunset - Sunday sunrise (Night 2), then resurrection on Sunday (Day 3). You're still missing a night and even this involves counting Friday even though not much of Friday remained when Jesus was put in the tomb.

Or, as you listed it, Friday daylight (Day 1), Saturday night (Night 1), Saturday day (Day 2), Sunday night (Night 2), Sunday morning (Day 3), which still only chalks up two nights.

Which word does the NLT translate to get "Friday"?

Looking at some other translations:

Luke 23:54

(ESV) It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.

(GNB) It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

(GNT-V) και ημερα ην Aπαρασκευης TSBπαρασκευη TSAκαι σαββατον επεφωσκεν

(KJV) And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

(KJV+) AndG2532 that dayG2250 wasG2258 the preparation,G3904 andG2532 the sabbathG4521 drew on.G2020

(KJV-1611) And that day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew on.

(MSG) It was the day before Sabbath, the Sabbath just about to begin.

(NIrV) It was Preparation Day. The Sabbath was about to begin.

(NIV) It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

(NIV84) It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

(NKJV) That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.

(NLT) This was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation, as the Sabbath was about to begin.

(TNIV) It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

I don't know that I'd regard the NLT referring to Friday as being the end of the matter.

I do not think it matters unless you're expecting precisely 72 hours in the grave. And in that case a Wednesday at 3 Pm death and burial before sunset Wednesday with a resurrection on Sunday some time between sunset and sunrise will not give you precisely 72 hours.

I'm not expecting precisely 72 hours and rejecting any explanation that lands on 71 or 73. But Friday shortly before sunset to Sunday morning is three days and two nights, so an entire night is missing.

Why does that matter? What's the problem with a day time entombment and a early morning resurrection?

If Jesus said he would spend three days and three nights in the heart of the earth then I'd expect him to spend three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

It's of little practical difference exactly what day Jesus died and exactly what day he rose again. He told us to remember him, not commemorate the exact date he died and the exact date he rose again. But when the whole Good Friday to Easter Sunday routine gets trotted out and people talk of the "three days and three nights" while describing a time period that clearly isn't three days and three nights it just makes me wonder whether people are really thinking about stuff. It also provides handy ammo for people to chisel away at the faith of weaker Christians, using tactics like "they clearly got this wrong, what else did they get wrong?"

Bottom line for me, if we're going to do something we might as well do it right.
