Not at all when we ask Christ in He comes but we must grow spiritually and enter into the realm of spiritual and leave the flesh behind or else we cannot enter in and be seated with Christ in heavenly places, that only happens in the spiritual. If Christ is in us that is a start but not the end it is a beginning, we spend the rest of our lives putting down the flesh and entering into the spiritual realm

I did observe that very few believe that saying the sinner's prayer means that the rest of one's life is irrelevant to final salvation.

That is why union with Christ implies conversion of life.

Oh... now a ritual prayer must be said, like God loves vain repetitive prayers... Get real with God and He will get real with you.

One can find variant forms of "the sinner's prayer" on tracts, web sites, and even video clips. It is used mainly among conservative evangelicals. I do not think they conceive of it as a ritual prayer though you are right to call it that.

It is but a tool to bring someone to salvation

That is very likely the intention. Helping souls to prosper and grow in grace is the intention of all the rites and rituals of the Church.

I'm not sure that's a helpful stance on the "sinner's prayer". If people try to claim that unless the sinner's prayer is said word for word, exactly as written, then I'd take issue with it. If it's used as a guideline for the sort of thing you might want to say to God then I don't see anything wrong with it. Assuming it (or something vaguely like it) is prayed sincerely then it isn't vain, and assuming someone doesn't repeat the same prayer word-for-word every few minutes it isn't repetitive either.
