Who do you think will replace Biden if he drops out of the Presidential race?

I don't see how it can be anyone other than Kamala. The resistance to sidelining the current Vice-President of the United States would be quick and furious if that were attempted. In fact, it has already been promised by some of her supporters.

It's hard to say.

Sidelining the VP in favor of someone else would be a very unusual thing to do, especially since the Democrats have made such a big deal lately of putting black women in every possible position. Having made such a big thing about black women it would make sidelining the black woman VP even more of an unusual thing to do, especially if they replace her with a white man. The inevitable accusations of tokenism would be all but impossible to counter.

Aside from that Gretchen Whitmer has the advantage of being female even if she is a white woman. Gavin Newsom is widely commented as being very telegenic and apparently the liberal cities in California love him. Whether he'd bring out the Democrat voters who might stay home rather than vote Biden is hard to say, but it's hard to see him having any appeal to moderate Republicans and given the news reports from California I wonder if he'd have much appeal among independents. But then he isn't the orange man, so we'd potentially end up with another election where each candidate's primary attraction is that they aren't the other candidate.

It is Kamala or nobody. At the moment it seems that she is the only person potentially willing to take the race as a loss to Trump will be political suicide to anyone running against him. She has nothing to loose as she is unlikely to ever get the nomination in any other way.

I think that's right. In addition, Kamala is known across the country, if not because of having accomplished much of anything in office. All the other contenders are known in their own states but by few people in other parts of the country. That is a problem that could be overcome IF there were even half a year or so left until election day. However, there isn't such a situation this year.

To make matters worse, the Democrats have enacted new election laws in many states which make 'early voting' an important feature of elections. The start of that early voting period will almost be upon the Democratic Party when it finishes its nominating convention next month.

Because history shows that a candidate who loses badly most often is judged to have been a weak candidate. Then the voters who supported that losing candidate turn towards some new face for the next election. That's not surprising, is it? And it's the general thinking at present that Trump is in a good position and may even win in a landslide, while the Democrats are in disarray.

It does? Biden ran and lost 2 times before becoming president. People still considered him a strong candidate in 2020.

I agree...

IF it's her, all those MILLIONS in the Biden-Harris war chest goes to her, as well as all the organization that already exists. If someone else, he or she starts from scratch and there's just not time for that.

Of course, Harris' approval numbers are even worse than Biden's. And she's not known for being a good debater or campaigner.

I think the political repercussions of a loss is only temporary if the politician is a career one like Biden. People tend to forget as well and you can see this also with celebrities who have done something wrong, people get mad but years later forget and they're heroes again.
