My Garmin had a challenge to run a 10k this weekend. I haven't been running more than 5 miles (about 8k) for six weeks because of the heat but figured the worst of the heat has eased so I'd give it a shot. I got the distance in, I ran my 8 mile route (a whisker under 13k all in), and found it harder than I'd hoped.

Still, it's put me back on track to get to at least 50-60 miles of running this month, so that's OK. I'm at just under 24 miles so far, which isn't so bad given I didn't run at all for the first week.

It was nice and cool this morning, so I did a 4 mile hike. I've been riding my road bike in the basement (it's on a trainer) and tomorrow I'll do a half hour ride along with walking a couple miles before church.

Yesterday it was a bit cooler so I pushed the speed a little on a 5-mile run. I wasn't breaking any speed records but did manage to shave about 20 seconds/mile off the speed I've been going more recently. Still significantly slower than my winter speeds but nice to get a bit more power down.

Then in the evening my wife wanted to go for a walk. We did a slightly shorter loop than normal - about 3.5 miles all in - so I definitely got my steps in for yesterday!

I could not convince myself to walk today even though it was pleasant outside. Tomorrow my neighbor and I are going to the park to walk together.

Nasty weather this evening, with unpredictable forecasts. I'm itching to get into the woods to hike, haven't done that for about three weeks now. I'm contemplating going for a single longer hike and accepting I'll be out for most of the day. I can carry plenty of water with me and keep it reasonably cool. Maybe I'll do my double-vista hike again, or maybe I'll strike out further into the woods.

Rest day from running today so went for a hike in the woods. I wasn't really feeling it today but pressed on regardless. During the descent, about six miles in, I started to feel more at peace in the woods - until then my brain was just constantly stuck on the other things I could have been doing. So instead of extending the route to another nearby park and adding about five miles and 1000 feet of climbing, I extended a little at the end and gained about one mile and not a whole lot of extra climbing.

All in I did a whisker over eight miles. I feel like I should sleep well tonight.

I did loops on my street because I was a little worn out from my hike with my neighbor yesterday.

Another run today. I wasn't really feeling like running when I set off, and spent much of the run wishing I'd stayed on the couch. But I got the miles in, even if it really felt like a battle today. Maybe the next time will be better.

My husband and I did just under 4 miles for our hike today then we went to Cheesecake Factory to eat lunch since we had a gift card. That place has really raised its prices, so we won't be returning. I don't eat their cheesecake since it doesn't taste as good as what I make, but the Skinnilicious Chicken Pasta is excellent.

A few good runs lately. I shifted my focus back to maintaining distance rather than speed, which helps in the heat and humidity, and looked to get all the way around the loop without taking any walk breaks. The last few times I've made it the full way around, and my average pace has slightly improved as a result. I'm still a good 30 seconds per mile off my fastest speeds but I tend to clock those when it's cooler. I'm hoping that when the heat and humidity of summer fades I can get some more good times in.

When it cools off a bit I also want to get more anaerobic work in. Sometimes it's fun to walk/jog the easier sections and sprint the uphills but when it's really humid it's so much harder to get my pulse back down again so I've kinda neglected the anaerobic aspect of training. I'm looking forward to putting that back in.

I'm hoping it cools down enough in the morning so I can get back to the park to walk. It's been too muggy and the mornings have had too much fog to safely walk around where I live. So I'm getting my steps in around the house and riding my bike in the basement (on a trainer).

Yesterday my wife and I went for a walk in the morning and it was horribly warm and humid. We weren't walking particularly fast but were still dripping with sweat when we got home. Today's run was a sweat fest - for a time there was a cool breeze but I took the chance between the light rain and the heavy rain so it wasn't really surprising that it was quite humid. At least it wasn't horribly warm as well.

It cooled down a lot here so hopefully where you live it's cooler and you can run. I'm still deciding if I want to go to the park but after a hard rain it's not as fun walking through a lot of muck.

What was the most intense physical exercise you've done in the past few years?

I was following a training plan to improve my running speed, and it had me running longer distances. One day I figured if I was going to be running 12 miles I might as well extend it a little and make it a half marathon distance.

If you're talking about short bursts of intense exercise, when it's cooler I follow an 8-mile loop from my house, walking the flat sections and sprinting the uphill sections. That gets my pulse going pretty well, even if not for very long at a time.

Well, I had surgery earlier this year and although I'm considered "recovered" the body can take a full year to get back to normal.

My most intense workout this year has been hiking at a local park for 4 miles. We live in an area that is hilly so it makes for a really good workout.

Lots of walking today. My Garmin has a monthly challenge to walk 30 miles. My previous personal record was completing it in 3 days. I thought it would be a cool flex to complete it in one day but it was too hot, so I topped out at a whisker under 24 miles. I'll finish it tomorrow and still get my new personal record.

I got the 40,000 steps in a day badge for my efforts. I had hoped to get the 50,000 steps badge as well but fell 6500 steps short of that. I seriously considered going back out for another walk to finish it but it was dark and I really didn't feel like pounding the streets any more.

40,000 steps in a day? That's going to mean new shoes soon LOL

Only if I do it regularly, which isn't likely to happen!

Usually new shoes become my running shoes, and they're usually good for 3-400 miles. Then they become my walking shoes until I replace my running shoes. Then my old running shoes become my walking shoes, my old walking shoes become my working/gardening shoes and my old working/gardening shoes go in the trash. By then the tread is usually worn away completely.

I went to the park and walked 3 1/2 miles before my husband and I went down to eat at a restaurant that's on a river. It was nice watching the boats coming and going.
