I got my workout in today. The hill repeats are getting easier, so I'm pushing the speed harder. I only have to run up a hill for 15 seconds, which is just as well because I'm getting to a point where I can reach the top of the hill I'm using in around 20 seconds. Soon I'll need a different hill.

My wife and I went to check out a couple of gyms. The closer one is marginally more expensive but the further one is, well, further. It's about a 40 mile round trip and I don't want to find we're driving 120+ miles a week just going to and from the gym.

Probably going to go for a walk this afternoon when the clouds are supposed to clear. The chance of rain is low according to the forecast but the last time I trusted that I got soaked and frozen because the 2% chance of a sprinkle turned into me getting wet in the cold wind.

In the meantime I might see about breaking some more of the other side of my house. I need to replace a couple of 2x2 studs with 2x4 studs so I've got enough depth to pass cabling through them and still be safe to screw a baseboard into place from both sides. Depending on how tall they are I may just buy some 8' long 2x4s and remove the existing studs, or add some thickness to the wood across the ceiling and floor and enlarge what's already there. Then I can lift the floor in the attic above the room, remove the insulation above the ceiling, and pull the ceiling down. That will be a fun job - more bags of plaster and more piles of nasty laths. At least now I've got a good way to get rid of it all - a friend burns it to keep his woodworking shop warm in the winter - if he takes them away it means I don't have to stand around at the end of the yard waiting for them to burn.

I took another look at the other side of the house and found that my studs are actually 2x4s but installed perpendicular to what I would expect, so I'll just need to remove them, turn them 90 degrees and reinstall them. That's a hassle, as they have drywall mounted to them. I may yet just add another 2x4 to them - it will make them much stronger than they need to be but will give me the advantage of not having to damage more drywall just yet.

I got a few more sections taken out, took a door off its hinges ready to take the doorframe out and reuse that elsewhere, and gave some more thought to just what I'm going to do with the space that was a very small bedroom and is most likely going to become a slightly larger bedroom.

Then I went for a walk. It was pretty chilly and the wind was cold but once I got into my stride it was nice enough. It just took me a couple of miles to get into my stride today. Tomorrow I've got more speed drills as part of my workout plan. Last time I had speed drills there were four of them but tomorrow there are six of them. That will be interesting.

Since it's getting colder I decided to shift tack a little, and fill a few holes. I found some more holes where ceiling joists were rested in holes in the brickwork, that let cold air rush down inside the bricks and out through the holes. Essentially what it means is that the insulation between indoors and outdoors was a sheet of drywall. Except now the drywall isn't there any more.

First order of business was removing another layer of bricks from the chimney stack so I could get at one of the holes. That was tricky as it was surrounded by beams so I had to break the bricks into much smaller pieces than I had hoped. Finally I got them all out, then got the vacuum cleaner in there to clean out the holes, then the air compressor to blow out anything that remained, and then a last go with the vacuum cleaner. The next step was a can of spray foam, which filled all of the holes. One of the holes was tricky to get to as it's right in the very corner of the room and I can't yet take down the section of wall I'd need to remove to be able to get at it properly, so I sprayed a load of foam as close as I could get to it.

Now I've got 100lb of concrete chunks sitting around, another 40lb bag of drywall pieces and old plaster ready to go out for the garbage men, a small pile of old laths ready for my friend who burns it, and a hope that my neighbor will need some more concrete for a project he's been working on for some months now. If he doesn't I'll need to figure another way to get rid of it, which will probably involve putting it out with our regular garbage 40lb at a time.

I got my workout in. I'm not sure how my legs kept going for the last part of the speed repeats but I got to the end even if I struggled to maintain the target speed. I wasn't far short, just a couple of seconds per mile slower than my target range.

This week's session contained six speed repeats. Last week there were four. Next week there are eight. I'm not looking forward to doing eight of them.

Playing with the dog!

Frosty today so debating what to do. Today is a rest day on my training plan so I might take a leisurely walk, I might go for a walk in the woods, I might do some more breaking in my house. Or I might do some combination of those things. For now I'm sipping my coffee and contemplating.

Lazy morning so far. I don't know why but last night's sleep was disturbed and restless. Today's workout is listed as a "long easy run". It's barely above freezing outside so I'm not sure what I'll end up doing. This time of year maybe wasn't the smartest to sign up for a training plan. It would be good to find a gym that is close enough to home that I don't end up with loads of driving, but with sensible fees. The one that's most convenient wants an "initiation fee" that is nothing more than a fee they charge because they can. If you let membership lapse and sign up again they hit you with another fee. Since I only want a membership for a few months while it's cold outside that makes the entire process very unattractive.

I got my "long easy run" done but forgot about the easy part, pushed a little harder than I intended, and accidentally shaved a chunk off one of my personal bests. Essentially I noticed my first couple of miles were faster than I thought, and what I've done so far has improved my fitness more than I expected. A nice hot shower felt pretty good after a run today.

Our cable company is sending out a tech today since our tv and internet were out this morning and they couldn't reset it from their office. It's working now but I'm not canceling the tech since it could go out again. TV was out yesterday morning too so something isn't right in the lines, the modem or a splitter.
