Had a good day yesterday and now trying to catch up on things we didn't get done while we had family over.

Lazy morning. Not a great night last night. Maybe I'll go break a bit more of my room and spray some more foam. It seems I still have a slight draft despite dumping an entire can of foam into a window well. It looks like there's still a very small gap through it, so perhaps some more foam is required. I just need to decide whether to cut some away - maybe I'll cut some back as far as I can so I can make sure everything is completely filled. Not sure how I managed to leave even a small gap but there you go.

Still cold and wet outside, so unlikely to be venturing very far today.

Hello morning all! How’s it going so far with your day? Today, I’ve just had my usual 3 hours weekly therapy session both online and by phone. Tonight, I’m indeed really way too exhausted to do anything else but rest in bed before dozing off.

Fun With Wiring yesterday afternoon, until well past dark. I decided to rig up a temporary power outlet in the room I've been draft-proofing because the chances are pretty high I'll want to use an electric bar heater in there over the worst of the winter to keep the chill off, and I'd really rather not tie up one of my heavy extension cords to do it. If I'm running temporary power in there I might as well have a light as well, so got busy running some cables to make it all happen. Because it's temporary I'm using offcuts to the extent I can. I've got cable in place to connect a switch to a light fitting and then on to a power socket, I just don't yet have the cable from the switch to a suitable junction box. Once that's in place I just need to join it all together and it's ready to roll.

It will be handy being able to work in there even if it's dark. It's not much fun working by the light of a work light, even if it is a bright work light, and even less fun working in multiple rooms and having to carry the light back and forth.

When it warms up a bit I'm ready to drill a hole through the outside wall and run a new cable to where I'm going to put the new porch light. That's probably not happening until spring now.

Got the wiring finished. The light works, as does the socket. That means now I can run the shop vac in there without trailing the power cable through the doorway. One less trip hazard is always a good thing. It's also a good thing to be able to see in there after dark, so I don't have to stop work so early. Maybe I'll rig up a temporary light in the rooms above, that are also works in progress.

My husband is off work all week so we've been tending to things that need to get done around the house.

Got some more room dismantled. For some reason the genius who assembled it used construction grade nails and construction grade techniques to hold together some wood that was nothing more than a cupboard. It took a bit of doing to get it apart with pry bars, and miraculously I didn't destroy the cupboards underneath in the process. I'm going to reuse them in the basement.

Howdy morning all! How’s it going so far with your day? Today, as it’s yet another awfully cold, snowy, dark and gloomy day outside, currently feeling like -1C, just enjoying my usual TV show before falling asleep tonight.

No way. I'm sick of doing things in our big house. I keep telling my husband that our next house will be small and in a 55+ community where they take care of everything for us.

I'm not sure I'd want to live in a community of the elderly. The last thing I want is people living all around me with their TVs turned up loud because they were all hard of hearing.

The pandemic has also highlighted to me how retirement-type communities are stuck with rules handed down from on high. If you have your own place you can decide for yourself whether you want visitors. I'd rather have that freedom than have someone else telling me I wasn't allowed to see anyone.

Got to spend some more time dismantling a kitchen today. I marveled at just how many nails held a single wall unit in place. It was notionally held to the wall with two screws, but had so many other things nailed and screwed to it that the only way I could get it off the wall was to use a carbide oscillating blade to cut through a bunch of things surrounding it. But eventually I got it off the wall, and it's now sitting on the floor with the one that was once beside it on the wall. Along the way I ripped a load of trim off the wall, much of which is now cut into little pieces in a bag of wood scraps that a friend of mine will one day burn to keep his (outdoor) workshop warm.

Then this evening I set to dismantling some boxing on the adjacent wall. I'll need to take it down so I can get the next couple of wall units off, which I need to remove to get at the window trim. I never thought I'd have to dismantle virtually the entire room just to get at the window trim, but there you have it. I can reuse the wall units in the basement, which will be handy. And having that light I rigged up recently makes a huge difference, as does having a power socket where I can keep the shop vac out of the way and still keep my work area reasonably clean.

I wish there was a market for old nails. I'd be incredibly wealthy by now.

Hi sup there? How are ye all doing today? Today, since it’s yet again another freezing cold, dark and gloomy day outside, currently feeling like -14C, just relaxing online before tucking myself in bed tonight.

What if YOU were hard of hearing too though? LOL Then it wouldn't matter. I think you and I are talking about 2 different types of communities? There are some that are connected to nursing homes and those have strict restrictions but then there are 55+ communities where you just need to meet the age requirement and not have kids living with you...as well as pay for other services such as lawn care and snow blowing and getting new roofs when needed.

Still sounds far too much like a homeowners association for my liking.

My parents considered moving into the kind of place you're describing but rejected it for many of the same reasons I'd have rejected it. Truth be told I'm increasingly uninterested in living in an apartment for the same reasons. I don't want to be told that I have to come up with some money now just because a committee decided it's time to replace all the window.

If I find I can't mow the lawn or clear snow myself I can always pay someone to do it as needed.

Hoping that today is the day the next wall cupboard gives up the attachment to the wall. With any luck it will end up being carefully lifted out of place rather than falling on my foot. If anyone hears a loud scream it might have fallen off the wall....

I started a new full time job about a month ago and have had to learn a new computer system and way of doing things. This is an office based job which is also an adjustment for me since I was working in the community. We don't see anyone face to face right now due to COVID19 so everything is over zoom or the phone. I have made a few mistakes, but learning more and more everyday

Woot! I managed to get the cupboard off the wall without the use of too many expletives along the way. Getting the trim off from around it so I could get at it was a bit of a drag - much of it was longer than anything I needed to remove for the previous ones, and nailed every which way into some construction lumber. Thankfully for this one it was easier to get at stuff and, since the construction lumber was little more than old 2x4s with lots of nails in them, I didn't need to use much finesse in removing it so took my reciprocating saw to it. That made short work of the framing, and meant I could use a simple pry bar to take the butts off from either end. Once all the boxing and framing was down I could remove the window trims.

Thanks to lots and lots of nasty plywood trim that I've removed my bag of wood scraps is now almost overflowing. I'll need to talk to my friend to get the last empty bag back and get him to take this bag away. Hopefully it will keep him warm as he's working through the winter.

Now I have three matching wall units that I hope I can mount in the basement. I'm thinking they'll go in my workshop, to help me keep smaller tools organised and keep them from getting covered in sawdust. I'll just need to figure a way to put a piece of trim over the top so the units themselves don't get covered in sawdust.

Maybe tomorrow I can get some more of the featherboards removed to gain full access to the spaces around the window. This window is more like I was expecting - wood nailed sideways to the brickwork with some gaps all around. There are also a few gaps in the brickwork that I can patch easily enough. In this part of the room the main trouble is getting access to stuff - it's a bit precarious standing with one foot on the counter and the other foot on the ladder trying to pry a six-foot long piece of wood away from the ceiling.
