Howdy morning all! How are you? Today, I’ve just had leftover pizza with lemon iced tea again for lunch. Tonight, just playing some games on my Wii before hitting the bed.

Got up late and am surfing online before I go walking.

Church this morning, then a long nap in my recliner. I'm not sure why I was so tired but I put my head back and was out for nearly two hours. Then I went for my walk around town. My wife didn't want to come with me today and I really didn't want to go but wanted to get some steps and exercise. I was barely out of the door and felt really positive so decided to see how much of it I could jog, and set a new personal best time to get around my loop. My jogging speed is about the same as it's always been and jogging up hills sends my pulse very high very fast but on terrain that's more or less flat I can hold a jogging pace for longer than I could before. I doubt I'll reach a point where I can jog the whole way around before it gets too cold for that sort of thing but maybe next year I can start from a stronger starting position.

I need to make some more rustic crosses. Someone visited us at the local flea market and took all of the stained crosses. Some were stained and lacquered and some were just lacquered. They also wanted (and paid for, ahead of time) one more than I had. So I need to make the extra one they paid for, and make some more to go in stock. I've got enough material to make another 12 in total, then I need to find another old pallet to break up. I might be able to make a few more out of the heavier sections of the pallet, I'll need to see how best to feed it to the table saw.

I made another cross for our wall. This one isn't made to look rustic - it's got trimmed corners and smoothed edges, and is made from fir that was part of my attic floor for 100+ years. It's hanging in the basement, now the stain has dried it's ready to be lacquered.

The rustic crosses are fairly quick if I can make a few of them at a time. I made a simple jig to guide my router when I'm making the dado cuts, and a stop block on my miter saw means I can cut a few pieces to length without having to measure each one. The total elapsed time is much longer, simply because the glue needs time to dry, then the stain needs time to dry and then the lacquer needs more time to dry. That sort of thing is easier to do in the summer, when I can take them out onto the porch in the afternoon and use spray lacquer which the can says needs 30 minutes to dry but in the summer in direct sunlight can be dry in more like 5 minutes. On some workpieces I've had three coats of lacquer done and dried within 30 minutes, in the direct sun. It's also handy because outdoors is so much better ventilated than my basement.

It just took about two and a half hours to make the dado cuts for 9 crosses, sand them to get rid of straggly bits and get six of them glued up. I would have glued up the other three but ran out of clamps. That also included some time to rethink the jig I use to hold the pieces in place as I make the dado cuts because I was having trouble with pieces moving while I was running a router through them (that's really not a good thing to happen). Taking out that time means this part, which is the most labor-intensive, probably runs about 15 minutes per cross all in. That might even come down a bit, assuming my new jig system works as I hope it does.

If the crosses sell well I'll come up with a better means of holding them in place but for now what I have seems to do the job nicely. Staining and lacquering them only takes a couple of minutes per cross, but then it's about the time they take to dry.

Having set a bunch of my crosses to glue I went out for a walk. No records broken today - it was very much a walk rather than a walk/jog with increasing emphasis on the jog - but it was a good walk.

All being well the glue will be set now. With the benefit of hindsight I should have cut some more dadoes out of the other three crosses. and should also have waited until I had the dadoes cut to trim the corners. I just hope I have enough material left to clamp them down to cut the dadoes at all. If not I'll need to use the table saw, which is more than a little tedious. That said, maybe I can knock up a jig to cut a standard width dado in a standard width piece of wood and use it for everything. I have a dado stack for the table saw, and can probably do what I need with a couple of cuts, using the full stack. I'd just need a different jig for each width I plan to make, although that doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Hoping the stain on my crosses has dried so I can spray lacquer on them. Since I'm confined to the basement with the weather being cold and gloomy I need to turn the furnace off for an hour or so while I spray it. It's perhaps a little overcautious, I just don't want a fireball if the furnace fires up just as the solvents are thick in the air.

I really need to think about getting a couple of extraction fans in the basement so I can suck air through, with something I can put over the top of them to provide insulation in the colder months when they are not in use.

There are portable spray booths with exhaust fans and extension hoses that you should look into!

I need to figure out just what I'm doing with the space first. Truth be told I"m not spraying enough lacquer that it's a huge issue, just something to be aware of. If I start going through gallons of the stuff then I'll definitely need something to manage the fumes.

When I have things to spray I just put it in a huge cardboard box out in the garage with the doors opened. Then I run inside quickly after spraying! When it's cold I will let it sit for a couple minutes and then bring the item inside quickly and down to the basement where the smell won't bother anyone.
