In Oregon there's been 15 or more people killed and up to 20 (in total?) shot.

I guess "guns do not kill people, people kill people" is still the mantra of the pro gun ownership lobby.

And it is true, unarmed citizens and teachers make this a soft target that is victim rich and attracts crazies. If they were armed and it was a lot harder I dont think it would be prevalant

There was another fatality on the roads today. But I guess cars kill people so we should ban them, right?

Oh no, "cars do not kill people, people kill people" no need to bother with a drivers license or laws against driving without one, right?

Last time I went to a place that sold guns they wouldn't let me buy one and walk off with it right there and then, I needed a driving license and a background check.

Surely requiring a license is an infringement of one's second amendment rights?

Actually knowing who has the guns is an infringement as that makes it all the more easier to collect them. There was a reason for the second amendment and it hasnt changed

I'll GLADLY support taking guns away from NUTS who can do harm with them..... just as soon as we take children away from parents who are NUTS and do harm with them, just as soon as we take CARS away from drivers who are NUTS (or drunks) and do harm with them, just as soon as we take FOOD away from eaters who are NUTS and do harm with it.... just as soon as we take booze away from NUTS who do great harm with such....

No sane and rational society would propose that it is wrong to take away dangerous instruments from one segment of the population without also ending all dangerous practises and confiscating all dangerous instruments from all unqualified persons.

Perhaps, although to be honest I don't know enough about the second amendment to put forward a considered argument one way or the other. I think the "right to bear arms" is pretty universally known but since I haven't read the constitution or the amendments it's hard to form an opinion one way or the other.

It certainly seems that to legally acquire a firearm some form of check is required, although the secondary market is perhaps somewhat less regulated. I assume not everybody who inherits a firearm rushes to declare it on estate forms, especially given that any question relating to its whereabouts can be answered, even if dishonestly, with a shrug and "I don't know what grandpa did with his handguns".

Go back a year and pretend that you could enact legislation that would prevent this. What would it be?

The press is LEAKING that the gunman targeted CHRISTIANS. The news here in the USA, as I'm experiencing it, is trying hard to not stress this but it has been stated: Christians were shot in the head and all died, others were shot in the leg so that they would only be injured.

I just saw a couple of interviews and both REFUSED to state the religious affiliation of the gunman.

This seems to be a pattern..... If the persecution is to Christians, that's glossed over. The persecution of Christians around the world is simply..... ignored. We have a member of my small Lutheran parish from Iran, whose brother was shot - execution style - for being a Christian. None of this ever gets mentioned in the press. Awhile back, nearly all Christian churches in Egypt were burned - many of them centuries old - entirely glossed over. I won't speculate why this is, but it does seem to be the case. I predict the reality that this gunman targeted CHRISTIANS will also be glossed over - mentioned, perhaps - but glossed over.

Persecution is going on around the globe and yes, you are right that it is not reported and is glossed over

Pretend? ... Seems a subject that deserves better than pretending.

Okay, what you to prevent this from happening again?

Maybe a change of culture; such frequent mass shootings by a single perpetrator are very rare elsewhere in the western World. Canada has far fewer, Australia too has far fewer, New Zealand, England, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Spain, France, Germany ... all have far fewer such incidents.
