We never learn.
One of two things will happen; 1) We clean up and wait for it to happen again. 2) We know it's coming and do nothing.
One is insanity, one is just sick.
Or start down the route the UK took, where a 1.5" pocket knife is ruled illegal because the blade locks.
In the UK we had a small number of mass shootings, and after Dunblane the government of the day went into full-on knee-jerk mode and introduced a sweeping ban on guns. Weapons are now so tightly controlled in the UK that the kind of knife one might expect to take on a camping trip is illegal. Any concept of self-defence is pretty much illegal. In the UK you won't run into a bobcat, bear or mountain lion in the woods but in more remote areas you may encounter a feral cat and there's periodic talk of reintroducing wolves into some areas, and that's before the seemingly ongoing issue of dogs running out of control.
Some time back some nutter ran riot with a samurai sword, and the immediate question was whether swords should be banned. What happens when someone runs wild with a regular kitchen knife? I've got enough big nasty knives in my kitchen block to do some major damage to a lot of people, and I'm not a chef by any means. I know the standard argument is that a person with a gun can kill more people more easily than with a knife, but what happens when someone runs wild with a carving knife or a meat cleaver in a room full of 6-year-olds? Are they really going to come out any better than if the nutter had a bagful of guns?
