One thing I keep seeing people asking on Facebook is why would Dr. Ford do this to herself...she's getting death threats, her reputation is questioned, etc... My answer is that there are people who love to martyr themselves no matter the cost.
Isn't it strange how Kavanaugh's accusers are Democrats?
That's part of the reason why I find the accusations against him to be implausible at best. The idea that someone who sees it as her civic duty to block his nomination should approach a senior Democrat rather than the police, who in turn sat on the report for months only for it to mysteriously leak at the last minute, doesn't make any sense at all. Either you want to come forward or you don't.
Then when another accuser came forward and she also appeared to be a Democrat activist, the whole thing took on even more of a stench. You'd almost have to wonder whether this conservative federal judge somehow knew, nearly 40 years ago, who would become Democrat activists so he could specifically target them. As I said before if a female Republican activist came forward with an accusation, at this point it would instantly be far more credible.
In many ways, if the judge has shown examplary character for more or less his entire adult life one might almost argue that, even if his accusers' stories are true, it is no longer relevant to the character of the man seeking his nomination confirmed today. I know in the light of the #MeToo and #BelieveWomen movements many will find that statement abhorrent but given the vagaries of the situation in the first place and the amount of time that has passed since then, it seems absurd to cancel a nomination based on something that could simply be a misunderstanding, however unfortunate and distressing it turned out to be for Dr Ford.
That said, if the judge has lied under oath in the last few weeks, that is a cause for major concern. If that turns out to be the case it's hard to see how he can possibly ascend to the Supreme Court and, if he has lied under oath, he needs to be stripped of his status as a federal judge completely. You or I would face far more serious sanctions if we were to lie under oath.
