The baptized (those who received baptism in the name of the Trinity) are clothed in Christ's righteousness (Galatians 3:27). When we look at ourselves, we are lacking, but knowing that we're clothed in Christ gives us assurance of salvation.

I've seen people online telling others to try harder and sin less so that they can go to heaven. Why aren't more people proclaiming Jesus' righteousness as the way?

It's probably because most people aren't actually Christian and just saying you are doesn't make it so. The words that come out of your mouth are a great indicator of where your heart is and isn't.

It's an easy option.

If it's all about what Jesus did then I'm nobody special. If it's all about doing it yourself then I'm clearly better than you are because I'm doing it and you aren't.

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

- 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

It’s very comforting to know without a doubt that because Jesus Christ became the perfect sacrifice, God sees me as righteous.

I think there are a few of reasons.

1. We can't fathom the idea of someone else paying our debt. As good as it sounds we just can't wrap our head around the idea of free unmerited grace.

2. We want to accomplish things for ourselves. We think that Christ isn't actually saving us, he gives us the ability to be saved, provided we are good enough and do enough things to please God. And we want credit for doing what is necessary.

3. We confuse morality with Christianity. Many people think that "being good" is the same things as "being a Christian". While Christians should be "good" it isn't being good that saves us. A lot of people are "good people" but are not Christian.

I wish you were around when CH first started, we had a couple of people who believed that they needed to "obey" God and be sinless to be saved. Maybe they would have listened to you, because they didn't listen to any of us who tried to point them to Jesus.

Humans are often trying to claim credit for their faith or works to rescue them for heaven instead of relying 100% on Jesus' death and resurrection to get them there.
