My plumbing is being badly behaved. There's a blockage somewhere in the drains so things are not going as well as they ought and I will need to get a plumber out to fix the blockage. But with all of clever household devices and "internet of things" things I want to know where my self unblocking drains are????

I'm all for that!! Do you have trees in the area where the plumbing goes out to?

At one of our houses we had issues every few months. The next house wasn't quite as bad. Now we have a house without big trees in the yard and it's great!

It's the first time there's been a blockage in 18 years. I do not think it is due to tree roots but who knows? The plumber will find out.

A blockage? What have you thrown in it now?
The house I lived in before this one, that was standard every month. It was all a bit old and rotten. Once it was because the youngest threw a ball in the toilet. Funny!!

Self cleaning drains only happen when people stop allowing food waste etc going down them on a daily basis.. Being married to a plumber for years that's what he would say, "stop throwing crap down them then they shouldn't need cleaning out"... He wouldn't have put it quiet that nice tho..lol

If it's an outside drain do you have an access point you can put some water in under a bit of pressure?

If it's an inside drain you can get all sorts of handy doodads to clear them out. I had to fix mine a while back - my wife's hair had accumulated and formed a remarkably efficient plug. Needless to say the blockage was in the bit of pipe under the bathroom floor, so I got a big coily thing that uncoiled into the pipe that I could then twist vigorously (it's designed to be turned with a power drill if it comes to that). Of course since the problem was predominantly hair it was less useful than if it had been a solid blockage but it helped a lot, then I could use another doodad to essentially reach into the pipe and pull the hair out. That wasn't a hugely pleasant task but the pipes are clear now.

Well, one's bodily excretions are how one's body self-cleans its insides. Pity the pipes haven't managed to evolve a similar mechanism that would expel their unwanted wastes into the sewer mains.

Anyway I have the plumber coming out this afternoon to do the cleaning thing with their 'machine' and stuff. It will cost a bit. They charge a lot nowadays.

My drains didn't self clean and it took about 1.5 hours to clear the roots that were encroaching from the sewer mains up through the "riser" to my drains. The cost is $239. That's quite a lot but I am glad to have working plumbing again.

That's actually a fair price :)
