I started looking at reviews for some of the free ones. Does anyone have a good one to recommend? Do you pay for one? Which ones should be avoided? What about performance issues?

I used Hide.me briefly and still have it installed. It was good. It was more than capable of handling the CH web site. I turned it on only when I wanted CH. For the rest of the time I used my normal set-up. Hide.me is free but there are paid Hide.me services too. I think that the free version is limited to a total of 2 GB of data.

Psiphon seems to be a good free one that has been around for a few years.

I use IPVANISH, but it's a paid VPN and I got it as a promo with a discount. And I really like it, lots of secure features and thousands of servers all over the world. There is no limit that I know of, and I have it installed on many devices, including TVs, laptops, and desktops and phones. Performance is really good, no real issues so far and if for some reason I run into something that doesn't look right, I have switched servers and it's worked. The only problem I had for a few minutes was not reading the instructions, when I first set it up I could access the WAN, but not my own devices on my LAN. All good now. :)

I think for my own uses right now it will just be for my laptop and nothing else.

Have there been any problems with security issues with any of the VPNs?

Are they those things that hide your IP address?

Yes, a lot of people like to use them to get around the blocked pages at their jobs! LOL I know where I used to work that Facebook was blocked at first until they decided they wanted members to use Facebook to help the company...I don't remember really why they thought it was best to change their minds. YouTube was also blocked which made me mad when I wanted to see a solution to a problem I was having with Microsoft Word.

I once worked at a place that encouraged everyone to be on Facebook all day long. It was actually a fun place to work, but my commute was tough. But along with connecting to unavailable/unauthorized sites, it also gives you some protection on public networks like at coffee shops and such. Also when shopping online, it somewhat protects you from vendors that track shoppers. The website is an easy read if there are more questions.

I remember when corporate filtering first came into force and some of the unexpected twists that created. I remember the first time there was an almighty fight between one of the heads of department and the team that managed the mail server, because his people had worked until nearly midnight to prepare material for an office in Asia only to find the mail wouldn't let them send a picture because it might be pornographic. So they then had to take the pictures out of the document but leave spaces, send the pictures using someone's personal email address, and send the whole lot to the Asian IT department so they could put it back together again before the material was needed.

Then there was the time one of the guys in my team showed me an error message. His browser clearly showed the message "sites of type -sex- are not allowed". The site he was trying to get to was the Financial Times. I really struggle to think of a publication less erotic than the Financial Times.

The curious thing was that despite all this, there were still some pretty curious lapses. This was back in the days when it was common to see all sorts of domains based on mistypes of well known sites (goggle.com, yahhoo.com etc) pointed to porn sites. One of the guys mistyped a legitimate domain and the filters failed completely, leaving him with a screen full of rather dubious pictures.

After reading about VPN's I decided to try one so went to a site that listed the top 10 and for some strange reason I kept getting an error message saying site could not provide a secure connection, what is going on?

Is the error message coming from the VPN software or your browser?

I started using a VPN for all of my Internet activities about a year ago due to increasingly nosy ISPs. The speed reduction isn't as bad as I thought it would be. My ISP is a joke, so I never get my advertised speeds anyway, so I figure that I may as well just throw another shrimp on the barbie.

Try to use paid VPN's as they give enough bandwidth and no interruption while brosing. I used long back socks for browsign some websites where my IP was banned. The socks were bought from an online seller.

I recently got the 10 year license of the VPN named Windscribe. it was a good service from them. And they tend to be offering a lot of options for the browsing the content with servers from around the world. I think black friday or the christmas offers can be useful in such context.

The one thing that I hated was that there were a lot of "free" VPNs advertised and when you go to register with them, they actually have a subscription model so they aren't free. I actually went ahead and tried a VPN for the first time yesterday to try and watch a stream but it didn't work, unfortunately. Ended up getting blocked on a survey site I use as well because I forgot to disable it :Nooo:

I use Hotspot Shield whenever I can't log on here because my IP gets blocked at times (we've tried to find out why and there is no reason given). It's a good VPN and is free but limits the amount of data you can use and for my needs it's just right.
