It used to bother me when I saw people on their phones in church. I guess I immediately thought they were checking social media until a friend of mine said that he has his bible on his phone and during the sermon will read the scripture that is cited by checking on his phone. :scratchchin: I highly doubt all people are doing this.

Do you see people using their phones in church? Are they reading their bibles?

I go to a home church. Never see that. I tried to use it once when I forgot my Bible, but that went so slow, not handy.

Yes. I use my phone in church. Often during the songs that I am not to participate in. Prior to the service and during the service. My phone the go to for me when reading scriptures. I will not answer calls or texts or any other media while in church. A lady asked me earlier if I had the bible on my phone. She seemed pleased at the resounding " yes ma'am, about five of them along with other scripture."

Not punching in anything. Reading along as you would with a paper bible. As far as reading during song; I only do that sporadically and in cases where I can't really decipher the words of the song. I simply read scripture along with the congregation in digital form. Being relatively new to the bible, it is easier and faster for me to locate particular verses on my phone.

The same way you "enter in or hear" if you're flicking through or reading a paper Bible.

I like to follow Scripture references during a sermon, even if only to make sure things aren't being taken out of context. On the rare occasions I speak in church I encourage people to do that exact thing. It's all part of "test all things", and if we just accept the preacher's word that "the Bible says" we may be led down the wrong path if the text is misapplied or taken out of context.

A classic example was one church that was very fond of Job 22:28 - "you will declare a thing and it will be established for you". They stood on that solid promise of God. Except it wasn't actually a promise of God, it wasn't even God who spoke those words. It was Job's "friend" Eliphaz who was roundly rebuked by God in Job 42. It's perfectly true to say that "The Bible says, 'you will declare a thing and it will be established for you'" but to attempt to stand on that as if it were a universal promise of God is going to lead to some serious disappointment sooner or later.

I use a phone and sometimes a tablet in church to read Scripture and make notes. Occasionally I'll look at my email if something new comes in during a part of the service that isn't relevant to me.

If I see someone else using a phone in church I figure it's none of my business what they are doing. If they are posting on Faceache about how bored they are in church it's their problem, not mine.

If it aids you then by all means continue on. Thank you for a fresh perspective on this

Hahahahahahaha
The pastor should use it too. If one then posts: I'm sooo bored,
he can post back: wait, only 10 points to go, then comes the interesting part.

I'll use some study apps on mine to check references and such during the sermon. That's about it.

In my parish we ask people to turn off their phones during the mass; scripture for the mass is printed in the bulletin and we have a supply of mass cards for the use of the congregation. If a person needs to use a tablet (perhaps because of poor eyesight) that is fine, but they ought to turn on the 'airline mode' to prevent messages and calls from coming through while they are in the church.

I just leave my phone on silent when in church. That way if something important comes in I can deal with it at an appropriate time (which is extremely rare) and aside from that the routine checking of email my phone does won't bother anybody.

You can't not check your email for an hour on Sunday?

My phone automatically checks email and it's easier to just leave it alone than endlessly tell it about exceptions. The fact my phone is downloading email doesn't mean I'm reading it, and having the phone on silent means the chirps it makes when an email comes in don't happen.

In the unlikely event I'm expecting something critical (and there are few things that can't wait an hour or two on a Sunday morning) I've got access to it if I need it.

I put my phone in my purse during the service because I want to give full attention to the Lord during that time...if I can. I have enough distractions from my own brain. I remember my pastor talking about how we have lost our ability to listen. I think that is so true.
