I see a lot of memes on Facebook where adults my age and up say stuff like "When I was a kid I did such and such and such and I lived through it" but yet these are the same groups of people who now have failing health. Don't you think it was related to such and such and such? For example drinking water out of an outside hose where there are now warnings about cancer?

People often neglect to take in the context of their experience to the context of the same where variables have changed.

I live in an area of water fluoridation. I hate it and a fairly large and vocal section of the community stood up to it a few years back when they were pushing it - but the government got their way. It's maddening to me that some people are so gullible and easily misled that they will readily believe anything on the premise of "argument from authority" (9 out of 10 dentists say...) - hey - that's fine - believe that if you want - but why should every person have to endure adding a controversial chemical to our water supply? If they love fluoride so much, buy it and don't force everyone else to consume it though a very basic resource on which all of us depend. The people who supported it should have to pay for my dental work - because IT DOESN'T WORK. In fact - that should have been a stipulation before it was implemented - a vote - and along with the vote - a mandatory TAX to ALL INDIVIDUALS who supported it in their vote to pay for the dental of work of those who it was supposed to help but didn't, after reliable statistics are shown. Maybe they would have thought twice before just signing us all up for their forced chemical treatment.

IMO, years ago, people were far less protective of their physical well-being but much more protective of their spiritual and moral well-being.

For example, now parents go to HUGE lengths to be sure their kids are in car seats or wear multiple seat belts; that they wear helmets and pads, they are sure their teens have a generous supply of condoms, etc. But they could care less what the child views on the internet, they could care less about getting their kid to church and Sunday School, could care less about what they view as "normal" in TV shows and movies.

I'm not suggesting it's either/or. I think it's both/and. But I do recall a really wise man saying, "Do not fear him who can only kill the body but rather him who can kill both body and soul."

There are plenty of people living who are 80+ and 90+ years old they were not killed by drinking from the garden hose. Maybe hoses were made of different materials back when they were children.

Quality of air, water, soil, everything has changed detrimentally so that now the effects are showing up enmass. The last generation of elderly (those raised during the 30's fi) will probably be the longest living followed by a rapid decline because they are among those who initially received plain unbiased foods, plus the initial good use of medicine. (not to mention the funds that have come from inflation to be able to foot the services of elderly care now. The only generation to be able to do so)

Pandemics of cancer and other deadly diseases are definately showing up in those who 'did that and survived' ... not

I live in an area where there are a lot of people over 80- 90 years old. Some of them are even over 100 years old. My neighbor just turned 103.There is something I noticed that they have in common. (1) They are single. They are either widowed or divorced or never married. (2) They have children or grandchildren living with them. (3) They attend church. They are very social. They always look happy.

These are the ones who grew up with no running water in their houses. They had outside toilets. They grew their own food in gardens. They raises their own chickens and hogs and they walked. Sometimes I think this technical age we live in is detrimental to our health. Even though I very highly appreciate all of the convenience we have today .

Once upon a time, people DID things.... and they ate homemade, simple foods.
For the past 50 years at least (especially in now overwhelmingly URBAN America) people sit on their fat _____. And overeat...... junk food.
GOTTA impact health and lifespan...

And there was a whole generation (before mine!) who did the whole drugs, sex, rock and roll thing. Perhaps it's catching up with them as they enter old age.... I wonder why some have some health, memory and hearing issues?????

MY view: Keep slender, be active, keep the food simple and healthy, avoid mind-blowing drugs...

The more bacterias you get the better your immune system gets.
Those kids with sickly clean beds cause their moms are afraid they inhale some dust get dust allergy.
People in Indonesia can eat meat that lays in the sun all day without getting sick.
We always say: let the kid play in the sand with the cat poop. Good for the immune system.
Lol I drank from ditches as a kid.

The elderly manage to live to old age for many reasons not least being good genetics. They also had the "good fortune" not to be seriously injured or catch a disease that would shorten their life.

I do not think that our age is especially unsafe and disease ridden nor have human genetics changed so we can expect some who are middle aged today to live long lives just as some who were born 80+ years ago have lived a long life and are alive today. The only factors that seem to have changed in western countries is the amount of food we consume and the number of 'junk foods' available to us.

I can remember when I was a child that my mum went shopping and the number of snack foods she bought was tiny. It wasn't because we didn't want any it was because the selection available was far smaller than it is today. Potato chips (crisps), for example, came in two flavours - salt and salt & vinegar - so we didn't have 30 or 40 different flavours to choose from and buy but children today have 30 or more flavours of potato chips and that leads to consuming more. The same is true of carbonated drinks, when I was a child there was cola, lemonade, and ginger beer but not a whole lot more now there are upwards of a 100 different kinds of fizzy drinks to buy if you want to and some of them are advertised as "the healthy choice" . It is because of the abundance of these 'junk foods' at low prices that many over-consume and become fat and that may lead to shorter lives for them. They get fat at an early age and risk numerous diseases that arise from over-consuming.

I think that the major risks to living a long life are food related but there is likely to be a lot more to it. I suppose drinking from a PVC hose may lead to higher cancer risks.

Oh wow! I thought Salt & Vinegar flavored chips was a recent thing!!! I only discovered them about 5 years ago when I was subbing. A kid asked me for some change to go to the vending machine and he was always a bit of a ...well...problem? So I let him go to have him out of the classroom. He came back with a bag of salt & vinegar chips and offered me one and my eyes popped out of my head! He laughed. The entire class laughed and then I told him don't walk away I wanted my quarter's worth of chips ;) LOL

Salt & Vinegar crisps are quite old, they've been in Australia (and probably the UK) for a very long time. It comes from the habit of eating fish and chips with vinegar on both the battered fish and the nice brown somewhat crisp chips :)

They are tasty. We have fish & chips shops all around the metropolitan area. Fish & chips is still quite popular. Good food for Fridays in Lent :)

Yes,This is true. I had a coworker(different area same department) whom I helped have a baby. Her husband worked with my husband. Every time I turned around that baby was in the hospital sick. So one day I stopped by my husband's job and I saw her husband and I asked about his family as I had not seen his wife in a while. He told me that the little girl was back in the hospital sick again. I scolded him and said "You all are keeping her too clean! Put her on the floor, let her get dirty so her immune system can develop. And stop killing her immune system with all of those antibiotics. She never will get well if you don't let her immune system develop!" I was a bit testy but his wife is a nurse, she should have known. My mom would say you need to eat a peck of dirt before you die. LOL. I never knew what she meant when she said it, but now I do agree. Kids who are allowed to eat a little snot seem healthier than those whos parents rush them to the docter if they develop a sniffle.

Doctors push antibiotics way too much! My daughter was born very ill and had to be on antibiotics and I always worried she would build up an immunity to them because of that. She has allergies to some, but so do I as well as my mother so I think it's genetic.

Like with anything there is a balance, one that while it can be pushed to the extreme either way, it is not a good thing to do

There are dozens of salt & vinegar flavoured crisps in Australia, pretty well every company that makes crisps makes a salt & vinegar variety. Some have fancy names inspired by the chef tv programs - names like sea salt & malt vinegar.
