It's the first commandment that forbids images.

The language used in that Creed was from the late 16th century and in no way implied that we are dumb in the scholastical sense.. So no the people that maybe participating in a play or such are only following what was allowed and given from their leadership...

Im not all that concerned about creeds and determinations of men from the 1500s, but for us today, I'm just wondering what the problem is with making a play about certain bible stories, including some that may portray Jesus at any time during His time on earth between His birth and death/burial/resurrection/ascension, or even times before or after, for that matter, if it helps convey the truth of who He is and what He's done and what He will do?

And if it's okay for a church to make a play, why not have actors? And why not record it? If you can record it to improve the quality of the production, or help ppl learn their lines, why not record the finished product for others to see? In other words, MAKE A MOVIE?
Granted, we shouldnt make idols, not of things or ppl, or our own imaginations, pride or lusts, but surely we can appreciate the several gifts and talents God gives us, and especially if they're being used to glorify the Lord and help bring others to a saving knowledge of Jesus and God's love?

The concern is its a violation of the 2nd commandment to make any image of what man says is Christ!.. And to not use any creed that is only a few hundred years old, by godly men is like saying that the same God that moved in antiquity can't be used.. Moses and the other patriarchal order is far long removed.. Not saying that the creeds are inspired but what they wrote are founded on God's divine word.

**“God is opposed to idols, that all may know He is the only fit witness to Himself. *He expressly forbids any attempt to represent Him by a bodily shape . . . We must hold it as a first principle, that as often as any form is assigned to God, his glory is corrupted by an impious lie” (Institutes of the Christian Religion, 1:11). *See also Heidelberg Catechism Questions 96-98; Westminster Larger Catechism Question 109; and 2nd Helvetic Confession Chapter IV.

In an age of individualism and skeletel creeds or barebone statements of belief, the rich tradition of corporate confessions of faith provide a vital link to the church of ages past and the saints of all ages.

You are off topic if you read the first post in this thread you will see that the second commandment says: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

The Third Commandment prohibits profanity, swearing and cursing: “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in*vain.”

I am this thread's originator and I know what its intended topic is. It is about the second commandment according to the numbering of commandments that I have given to you in a previous post but that you appear to have ignored. The commandment says Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

No, that's cool regarding the creeds, I wasn't saying disregard them or anything, I was merely saying for the purpose of this thread, and the part of the discussion saying it's forbidden to make a movie about Jesus, I'm not concerned with those creeds for this time HERE and NOW.

I think equating an actor playing a part to help the bible come alive, or to display the love of God in Christ for others to be edified by, with the making of graven images or idol worship is a big stretch, REALLY big stretch, and misses the the spirit and intent of God giving the second commandment, and may also, in some cases, malign the spirit and intent of the ppl involved in the play or movie.

Nothing personal.. I asked because we are discussing the images and if they felt that the command was the third then we both are on the wrong topic

I respect your position.. But as you can see, it was not a stretch with the commandment nor from the reformers and it shouldn't be for us.

The commandment against images is the first commandment. I started a thread for that under the title the first commandment. Don't get too caught up on the numbering. Suffice it to know that this thread is about the commandment that says Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

Don't get caught up in the numbering??.. If we are not accurate with the numerical facts why did God call it the 10 commandments?.. Because they are numbered in a order for our obedience

I believe I could, though I believe the various versions and portions of the bible where it may be found have already been posted, and there is always a running debate among ppl claiming to be christians, or roman catholics, or some other religion, so my answer would probably not satisfy, and more likely add to the debate.

I'd rather reason together from all the counsel of God as to what He means by not making/worshipping graven images or idols, no matter what number is assigned to which commandment.

I just don't see how making a play or movie depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ, particularly when it's made with the motivation to glorify the Lord and help others be saved, is being considered idol-worship by some ppl, and I don't think that's what God had in mind when He gave the commandment(s) regarding graven images and idol-worship.

Try as you might you will never find a list in the bible of the ten commandments that numbers them from one to ten. all such lists are made by people. The list I have used is ancient. Saint Augustine used it before 400 AD. Others used it before him.
