Chapter One:
Her disappointment at the events of the previous evening left her wondering what had happened to her 'well laid plans'. One friend in particular had managed to sabotage her at every turn, and she began to entertain thoughts of revenge. It seemed practical, after all, given that her planning had been so exact - It should have been hers for the taking. She picked up her phone with a sly smile wondering if they would ever suspect her for what she was about to do.
"Yes, good evening. This is Julia Parrish. Can you send a car, please? Thank you."
Political campaigns needed more work, so she needed to meet with those who could finance its success. Along the way, Julia's thoughts were on Brian - how he could have been so deceptive as to have bested her at her own game. Yes, Brian would have to pay dearly for his deception and betrayal, after all Julia had done for him over the years of their supposed friendship. Brian had been very evasive the last time she talked with him and she was wondering what was up with that. It was a rare mental slip for her not to recognize something so obviously out of character for him.
Julia tried to direct her thoughts to the upcoming campaign and the tedious schmoozing she would have to do with those with deep pockets, but her mind kept wandering to the wood chipper her brother kept at his cabin deep in the woods. Making a call to her brother, Todd, about visiting the place would not be easy, as he had become such a recluse in recent years. Since their parents' death a few years ago in a freak skydiving incident in which both parachutes somehow failed, Todd had become increasingly wary of everyone. Nearing midnight, the gleam of light from the study in the approaching mansion stopped her wandering mind, making the cabin a thought for another day.
First stop, the great mansion of Blderburg, where a private meeting is convened. Here. Julia would meet with Dr. Plugenplayer, an eccentric young billionaire who had made her fortune developing smartphone applications marketed to the elderly.
"Julia. Lovely to see you, my dear. I hear that you've been having some troubles as of late. Would you like some wine?"
Julia felt that a nice glass of wine would be just what she needed, but she saw the wine had already been poured, and she couldn't help but think of the mystery surrounding her parents' untimely death, and so she warily declined the offer.
