Painting the small patch proved to be uneconomical. The last dregs of the paint had separated and smelled so bad I decided to throw it away. It's not worth spending $20 when all I need is enough paint to dab a brush in it, fill in a tiny little patch and then leave the rest of the paint, so I just pinned the baseboard to the wall anyway. The tiny patch is only noticeable if you look really closely and the chances are there will be a dresser in front of it anyway.

Then I got a load more tools moved out and the socket covers fitted. It's really looking nice in there.

Just a few minutes ago I finished David Jeremiah's book "the Handwriting on the Wall". It was originally written in 1992. Though I don't agree with some of it it is a good review of a pretribulation rapture viewpoint of the end times.

My wife was out making apple sauce this morning so I went for a longer fast walk. Then she called to see if I wanted to join her and her friend for lunch so I got cleaned up and went on out. Now I'm planning how best to hit my lacquering job - each coat should be dry ready for the next coat in 6-8 hours and if I leave it more than 10 hours I need to sand it. I really don't want to deal with sanding an entire floor with fine sandpaper and cleaning up all the fine dust so I'm figuring the best way to put two coats, with an option for a third coat such that I don't have to get up at stupid o'clock to put a final coat on it. I decided not to do it today because tomorrow morning I'm working the sound desk at church, which means a start that's earlier than normal. Maybe I'll give it two coats tomorrow and a third before breakfast on Monday.

I should be able to crack the top parts of the windows open so I get some ventilation in there but without opening anything far enough for rain to come in. Leaving the windows open just a crack also means I can leave the window latches in place so it's not a problem if we want to go out for a bit.

I saw that my husband made coffee this morning using the coffee pot instead of the Keurig but it's full of coffee grounds. He didn't listen when I was explaining to him that the filters provided with our coffee are too tall.

So I'm drinking coffee with grounds in it :(

Church this morning. Early start as I was working the sound desk so had to be there for the band's rehearsal, which is an hour before Sunday school. Then my wife and I got our walk in because there was rain forecast, and then I ran my shop vac over every square inch of the room I'm working on, and got the first coat of lacquer on the floor. I think I was too sparing with the lacquer because I ended up with a lot more left than I expected based on coverage estimates, so I think for the next coat I'm going to apply it a little more liberally. Assuming it's dry the second coat will go on around 11pm tonight, and then the third and final coat tomorrow morning.

It looks like the second gallon of lacquer I bought in case one wasn't enough is going to be surplus. As long as I haven't opened it the local store will take it back and refund it. It's good having a local store that knows me and is willing to trust me when I say I haven't opened it.

Howdy, morning all! How are you? Today, I’ve had my usual weekly 3 hours therapy online and by phone. Tonight, I’m too exhausted to do anything else but resting in bed before rocking myself to sleep.

The second coat of lacquer is on the floor. I figured I'd start about 11pm and finish about midnight. I started at almost exactly 11pm and immediately started running into problems. Not least the trouble of seeing just which boards were lacquered and just how far I was along my current board, given I didn't have the daylight coming in through the windows to help and because putting lacquer onto already lacquered boards is a lot less visually distinctive than putting lacquer onto virgin wood.

Thankfully I figured I could use one of my battery powered work lights to help. I set it on the floor shining slightly downwards, so the lacquered sections glistened under the bright light. Then I just moved it across the room as required.

The second coat was much slower to apply than the first one so I ended up not finishing until closer to 1am, and then needed a few minutes to clear my head from the vapors. I had windows open to try and vent the fumes and had a fan in a window in the landing to try and vent more fumes out but the buildup was surprisingly intense. Curiously while I was working I wasn't really even aware of the smell at all but once I was done and went out into the landing it suddenly hit me.

This morning I looked in on the floor and it looks really nice. Now I just need to decide whether to give it a third coat or leave it as it is. Since it's a floor I'm thinking a third coat is probably advisable.

The third coat of lacquer is on the floor and drying, and my head is a little fuzzy from the fumes. It's strange, while I'm applying the lacquer I don't really notice it, even though my wife can open the door to the stairs and smell it from there. But once I stop working it's like the shift from vapor-filled air to clean air makes my head fuzzy for a few minutes.

It's really looking good now. I can hardly wait to see what it looks like once this final coat has dried. Then I can get my oversized switch plate installed over the light switches and get the furniture in there. The last thing to do is give all the woodwork a good wipe and put some clear sealant between the window sills/trim and the window frames.

The third coat of lacquer is dry to the point I can walk on it although for now I'm walking on it barefoot and as little as possible. According to the can it can take "light foot traffic" in 24 hours, which would be tomorrow morning. I just wanted to close the window to make sure the rainstorm didn't get in.

In seven days it will be ready for heavier traffic, which will include putting furniture back in there. It's really looking good now. All that's left is to get the switch plate put on and some sealant put around the window frames. It's been a lot of work to get this far but I'm really pleased with the result. I've also learned a lot so hopefully the next rooms I rebuild will go a lot more smoothly.

Enjoying a quiet morning with the guinea pig. She's here for just a few more days until my daughter's air conditioning gets repaired at the apartment.

Lazy morning, needed a lie in partly because I was tired from all the work in that room and partly because I disturbed in the middle of the night. So now I'm having coffee planning a much more restful day than the last several days have been.

Seriously lazy day today. Went for our regular walk this morning and did almost nothing else of any consequence all day. I returned the spare can of lacquer that I didn't need, bought some local produce and had a nap in my recliner. I had planned to do all sorts of useful stuff but none of it quite happened. Maybe I can get at least some of it done this evening, you never know.

I think getting this room fixed up took more from me than I expected. It wasn't physically particularly demanding, although spending four hours on my hands and knees lacquering the floor in the space of 30 hours left me very sweaty every time, so I suspect it's just psychologically draining trying to deal with so many useless dullards who won't return my calls even when I'm trying to give them my money. At least my local sawmill was helpful - he couldn't sell me exactly what I wanted but could sell me something pretty close, and cut it to appropriate lengths so it would fit in my car easily while still minimising the amount of wastage given what I needed for my project.

It's also possible that the fumes from the lacquer have drained me more than I expected. Perhaps next time I lacquer a floor all this virus silliness will have subsided and I'll be able to get cartridges for my respirator that filter out the VOCs.
