I got my room insulated and shimmed. Then I got the last few spaces in the room below insulated - this was just cutting offcuts to fit into the spaces between ceiling joists and wall studs.
The most recent project is rebuilding a wall. The old wall had a very old frame for a sliding pocket door but we're not going to want to use it. The studs were visibly bowed in places and trying to figure out how to shim it to drywall it left me scratching my head in so many ways. I considered installing buddy studs, where I'd bolt a new stud against the old studs, but still had problems with the huge beam across the top of where the door once went. So in the end I decided to dismantle the wall completely and replace it. It took a bit of doing because there are two faces to the wall, both of which have their own studs. There's a beam about 12" down from the primary support beams that didn't seem to do anything, but studs from both sides were nailed to it.
So far I've got the door frame almost entirely removed, most of the studs removed, and new studs cut and fitted to replace them. It's been slower than I expected because I can't be entirely sure this wall isn't load bearing, so I've been taking everything very slowly and making sure not to remove more than a couple of studs at a time without putting something else in to replace them, even if only temporarily. I have four more studs to fit, and three more studs to remove. But the doorframe is gone, and that's the main thing.
