It was a bit warmer today so I did one of my workouts and then did battle with some electrical work on my porch. Having discovered some extra beams that make it difficult to run a fish tape, I finally managed to get one piece of cable into place. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the second piece in place, and then drill a hole through the wall to get a new source of power out there so it all works.

Our cable was glitchy and we finally got a tech guy out tonight to replace a splitter and modem. Now we're up and running again!

Had a really badly disturbed night last night so didn't do my scheduled workout. I'm hoping it stays dry for enough of tomorrow I can do it then.

Instead I got busy with strings and cables. I managed to run a string across the entire length of my porch and used it to pull a new length of cable between two light points. Now I've got a ceiling box in place where one light is going to go, I've got a ceiling box ready for where the final point is (eventually it will hold a fan/light combo), and another box ready for where the first light in the chain goes. The cable to that first light needs to be replaced, which means drilling a hole through the wall and feeding it into the porch roof cavity. That can wait until tomorrow. I'm also going to need to fill the hole around the cable to stop drafts/bugs/etc and just ran out of motivation to do it today. Once that is done I'll have two lights on the porch, both controlled by two switches at two external doors. Before I started this piece of work I had two lights, each controlled by its own switch, and the wiring was nasty knob-and-tube. Now another piece of knob-and-tube is removed, coiled up and in my scrap metal bucket. It's all progress.

It's going to be one of the last 60 degree days for a long time so I'm going to the park to hike later.

It's warmer this morning so I'm going for one of my workouts. Today is speed repeats. They are hard.

Then if my legs still work I can press on with my electrical work on the porch. I'm not sure how I'm going to feed cable from a reel through a series of holes in the joists indoors, then through a hole in the wall when I can only reach the hole by reaching through a 4" hole in the porch ceiling. I'll figure something out. I don't have a lot of choice from here.

The speed repeats were brutally hard, largely because of a hideous headwind. It's a challenge to maintain a higher speed when running uphill but when there's a 25mph headwind it goes from brutal to all but impossible. I managed the first one, then modified the second so I ran downhill into the wind and then turned around to go back uphill with the wind behind me, then tweaked them to deal with the wind.

Then once my workout was done I got a hole drilled through my wall, a new cable fed through it and connected to the cables I've run through the porch ceiling, and mixed up some cement to fill the hole in the wall around the cable. Now I've got two back boxes in place with the nice new cable feeding them, the final connection point where everything except the back box is ready. I need to connect the new cable to the switch that will power it - at present the old cable is still connected to the switch. Tweaking the switch means turning off the breaker which also turns off more downstairs lights than I want to lose just now.

Got today's workout in, and set a couple of personal best times in the process. Admittedly one of them only shaved a single second off the previous time but it still counts :)

Gloomy rainy day today. Good service at church but not a nice afternoon so work on the outside of the house can wait until tomorrow.

Got some more work done on my porch, and then did another workout. This was another round of hill repeats. The hill repeats are too easy - they only last for 15 seconds so I've taken to attacking the hill at a full sprint to make them more interesting. Wednesday is back to speed repeats - 10 of them this time. The forecast is for not very warm weather with strong gusts. I'm wondering how much longer I can continue with these workouts before suspending things for the winter. It would be good if I can at least get into December without having to stall. The process gives an ongoing confidence score, which measures how confident the algorithm is that you'll hit your goal. The very top level is purple and below that is green - purple means you can possibly manage a more ambitious goal and green is that the system is confident you'll hit your goal. I'm at the very top end of the green range, with each workout I wonder if it will tip me into the purple section but haven't managed it yet.

The porch work was interesting. I had to trim about 1/4" off the edge of a piece of metal siding that was nearly eight feet long. That was interesting. I was thankful that I had bought a very fine toothed blade for my table saw some time ago - I originally bought it for cutting framing material to size but it was handy to be able to just trim a shaving off the edge of my piece of siding. Once the siding was trimmed it fit neatly into place on my porch.
