Good evening out with friends last night at our favorite brewpub. Church was good today - another friend was preaching and he had some good points to make.

I tested my shredder head out against a few expired credit cards and it destroyed them effortlessly. I just need to put something a little neater in place as the pieces of plastic pinged and scattered, whereas paper just falls. It should be easy enough to put a couple of plywood offcuts in place to catch the errant pieces.

I decided to deal with the heat and do my 3 mile hike at the park. I went to a halfway point and turned around up in the hilly area so that I could stay in the shade and be cooler. Continuing on would have exposed me to full sun and I'm not sure how well I could have done to finish. There weren't many people around in the parking lot and even the rangers were in their office instead of out and about.

Howdy sup there all man! How are you today? Today, I've just had my usual weekly 3 hours therapy session both online and by phone. Tonight, just resting in bed before hitting the pillow.

I cut some pieces of wood ready to screw them into place to catch chippings from the shredder. I started out with a couple of pieces of wood with a 45 degree corner routed out of them, which are now gluing to taller pieces. The plan is to screw them either side of the head so that chippings that ping sideways will fall down the inside of the "chute", across the angled section, and down the hole.

I hope it works. If it doesn't I might need to unscrew the shredder from the board and cut a bigger hole.

The next step is to cut a couple of other pieces to screw to the underside of the board, to stop stuff pinging too far below the board. Then I just need to figure a way to mount it over a bag and a more acceptable way of powering it.

More storms headed my way today so probably no walking outside for me. I'm going to a dollar store to pick up a few items.

We had some pretty good storms yesterday. One went right over our heads - a flash of lightning, all the power went off, a huge crash of thunder and all the lights came back on again. That was a bit weird, seen from a mostly dark basement.

Forgot to say, after the storms subsided I got a walk in the evening light. Lots of fireflies over the fields. I love fireflies.

My bedside light has been annoying me for months now. It's a turnkey light that was converted from an old oil lamp. But the turnkey part of it didn't work very well - it would light between the clicks but if you turned the key to the next click it went off again.

Today I got sick of it and fixed it. It was a lot more fiddly than I expected it to be but it's done now. A new bulb holder did the trick, and it was just a question of getting everything screwed to the right heights so it all held together as it should.

Now I've got my nice new work surface with decent lighting over it I've rediscovered the joy of tinkering.

I fixed another old lamp I found that had a crooked lamp holder (I'm still not sure how it ended up crooked but it's fixed and working now), as well as a couple of old electrical clocks I found in a dark corner. Then I battled with an electric clock we used for years until it became unreliable. I like the face of it, although my wife is mostly indifferent to it. I cleaned it up as best I could but it still wasn't quite right so I stripped it as much as I could without destroying it and tried again. Now it seems to be working, so I put it back on the wall. It's been on the wall for the last several months, just not working.

This evening I'm hoping to catch up with my friend who can probably help me with my question about power supplies. If he can then perhaps I can get my shredder sorted out more permanently than jerry-rigging the batteries from my power tools. If I can do that I'll look to mount it somewhere more permanent and keep some kind of container underneath it. Maybe it will just become part of the weekly routine to empty the chippings into the trash.

I polished the stair railing and heard buzzing and found out we have either a wasp or bee nest in the attic. So tomorrow an exterminator is coming out.

My friend was intrigued by the circuit board I gave him. I said if he had time and inclination to feel free to take it away and tinker with it. It appears that for the next several weeks at least he has the inclination but probably not the time. Still, it would only end up in the trash if I kept it so I said to fiddle with it whenever he had the inclination to tinker. Maybe he will build something workable. Maybe he'll salvage some parts and be able to use them for himself.

If all else fails I'll kludge something from a 60V battery. I don't think the battery clips push far enough to activate the switch that increases the voltage but it can't be all that hard to mod them so that they do, and then drill a couple of small holes to hold the wires I need to bridge a couple of terminals and tap across where the battery offers the voltage I need. My batteries can offer enough power to run the thing continuously for an hour or more and, if I can mod the cap to make myself a power supply, all I need to do is put the battery on charge and replace it with the next one.
