I see. "A doctor of a Lutheran Church". Okay, that makes sense. I imagine that John Wesley is also a "doctor of the church" for Wesleyan Methodists.

I think the Anglicans honor him as a saint as well, don't they?

I haven't heard of it. The Episcopal Church might possibly have added him to the calendar (they added Martin Luther King, so why not, eh?), but the historic pattern with Anglicans has been to basically stay with the obvious figures accepted universally, such as the Apostles, the Church Fathers, and a few others like St. Francis of Assisi. We don't canonize any new ones like the RCC does.

I'm not so sure that they would. But it would be better to ask an Anglican.

Luther had an earned doctorate degree, which was much rarer in those days than it is now. I don't believe that John Wesley, despite his fame and influence, did.

That is right, John Wesley earned a Master's degree at Oxford.

Yeah, Methodism ( like Lutheranism) started up in an academic setting.

I'm not sure that I'd say that...although it's a small matter. Wesley's views crystalized while he was in college, but his whole career as a priest, missionary, and evangelist was spent in the Church of England. It was only after his death that admirers of his, some of whom had formed societies within the Anglican church, made the break and established a separated denomination.
