The Notre Dame cathedral, one of the most recognizable symbols of Paris, caught fire Monday evening.
"The roof has entire collapsed, there are flames coming out of the cathedral as if it were a torch. It looks like the Olympic torch from the back with flames coming through the roof," France 24 journalist Charli James*reported live on air.

The 90 meter — 295 foot — spire soon after collapsed onto the roof.

Currently it looks like firefighters believe it was an accident. It wasn't a given that it wouldn't be a total loss but it looks like the latest is that one tower survived more or less unscathed, one suffered fire damage but has been saved, so at least part of the cathedral has survived.

It was some years ago I visited it, it was beautiful.

Sounds like arson at Catholic churches in France has been happening quite frequently lately.

France has seen a spate of attacks against Catholic churches since the start of the year, vandalism that has included arson and desecration.

Vandals have smashed statues, knocked down tabernacles, scattered or destroyed the Eucharist and torn down crosses, sparking fears of a rise in anti-Catholic sentiment in the country.

Last Sunday, the historic Church of St. Sulpice in Paris was set on fire just after midday mass on Sunday, Le Parisien reported, although no one was injured. Police are still investigating the attack, which firefighters have confidently attributed to arson.

The cathedral did not burn down but its roof did burn and some of the roof (the spire specifically) fell down. It must be distressing for many Parisians because the Cathedral is such a well known part of their city and its history, they say that much of the Cathedral is 800 years old.

It looks like rebuilding will be a major task, as cracks have appeared in the stone that potentially threaten the structural stability. Prosecutors are referring to "accidental destruction by fire", although I'm not sure what prosecutors are supposed to do about an accident.

Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has pledged to rebuild it.

It burns after 800 years on the first day of Holy Week...

Lord have Mercy!

Could this mean that we, Orthodox, have our Easter date wrong?

Almost a blink of the eye compared to Sancta Maria ad Martyres - usually called Santa Maria Rotonda - which is 1,893 years old now and not yet burned.

Nevertheless is it sad for the beginning of Holy Week to be marked by damage to the Cathedral - imagine how sad it will be for the parishioners who attend there weekly.

Saint Paul's outside the walls in Rome was burned in the 19th century and in response people from all over the world contributed money, time, materials, and labour to restore it. It looks like the picture below now, it was originally built in the 4th century AD, about 1.700 years ago.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to see it before this tragedy. I suspect it will take YEARS to rebuild and will never be the same.

My wife has visited the cathedral. Being that Paris is one of her favorite cities we were hoping to visit one day. Wish I could have seen the cathedral in it's original state.

I would disagree that it is a loss for us all. Whether it burned or not doesn't really make any difference in my life.
