We let our membership expire for a year or so. There is construction going on and it's become a hassle getting there and back.

That's a shame.

I got my regular walk in today. We went to a local craft fair, then went to pick up some wood for my lathe, and then for a bite to eat and a beer with the friend who cut down the tree I harvested. I hadn't seen him for a while, so it was good to catch up.

Going for a walk afterwards felt like a bit of a slog with a belly full of burger, but I got my steps in.

It was 60 when I woke up this morning!! And the humidity wasn't 99% anymore LOL So I turned off the air conditioning, opened the windows and went to do some loops in my neighborhood before going out for the morning and early afternoon to do a lot of needed shopping. I'm so glad I got to get outside because it's going to be really hot again this week so I'll have to do my indoor workouts, which I don't want to do. I would rather hike but can't breathe when it's bad outside.

This week is meant to be unpleasantly hot here too. This morning I got a run in and it was nice to be able to run without my heart rate going out of control on the hills. Maybe I'll get early runs in for most of the rest of the week too. That would be nice, keep the mileage up without the battle of taking on enough water to stay hydrated.

It's also nice because when it's cooler my pace is very noticeably faster. It gets frustrating needing as many walk breaks as I end up needing in the heat and humidity.

I got a run in before it warmed up. Then it felt like something of a workout carrying bags of tools through my daughter's house to fix some stuff for her.

I chose to not walk this morning but instead got out at 6am to start trimming the front landscaping bushes before it got too hot. Quite the workout! I don't use my hedge trimmers most times because it looks better to do it with the hand pruners.

I spent the morning with my daughter, then got to haul my new lathe from the local hardware store. It wasn't fun hauling 500lb of lathe parts through my house and down the stairs to my basement but I got there in the end. Then I went for a walk in the searing heat, and then got busy trying to put the lathe together.

It has two legs that weigh 68lb each, then the bed weighs 164lb and had to be lifted onto the two legs. Having done that I had to align it so all the holes lined up and I could put bolts through. I got most of the bolts in, but holding a 164lb lathe bed with one hand while trying to move a 68lb leg a fraction of an inch with the other hand is an exercise in frustration.

By the end of the day I'd sweated my way through three of my working shirts. My legs ache, my shoulders ache, my arms ache, and tomorrow I get to finish up building my new lathe, if my muscles still work.

The Canadian fires have turned the skies all hazy and the sun is orange. I'm not going outside today if I can help it and I'll do an indoor workout.

It's kinda hazy here but I'm not sure staying indoors is going to help me much. So I'll go and walk anyway, but with the head, humidity and haze I don't think I'll be running today. Maybe tomorrow, if I can get out early enough before it gets stupidly hot again.

So far today I got something of a workout in, I went to collect the washer and drier I bought for my daughter. Shifting them onto a trailer was easy, getting them into her house was more of a challenge. She needs to clear a path through the house to where they need to be, so I'm expecting this evening to include getting them down the stairs into her basement and connecting everything up.

Between now and then I get to finish setting up my new lathe. Hopefully that won't involve too much sweat.

We were supposed to take things to the dump today, but the air quality is too bad for my husband's asthma, so we're staying indoors.

I'm surprised my muscles still work at all, although they are reminding me I'm not 25 any more.

I got the lathe set up, I ended up using a piece of wood as a buffer and a hammer to tap the legs into position so I could bolt everything together. Lifting an irregularly shaped headstock that weighs 150lb into place, aligning it with the lathe bed, and sliding it into place, was an exercise in creative thinking. My wife helped take some of the weight and steady it while I moved it into place.

Along the way I also took the washer and drier down to my daughter's basement. Much of that was aided by a heavy duty hand cart but a bit of creativity was needed at the bottom of the steps where nothing quite fit.

Now I'm wondering how long it's going to be before my muscles stop aching, and whether I'll be able to be as energetic as usual with our granddaughters next week.

I decided that since my shoulders, arms and back hate me my legs might as well hate me too, so I went for a run. I had a challenge to run a 10k this weekend so decided to get it out of the way today rather than hoping I could fit it in after church tomorrow.

It's finally clear outside, but this morning is church so I won't be making it out and then it will be warm when I finally get home. That's the problem with going to a church that's far away, it's in the afternoon by the time I get home and in the heat of the day.

It's sunny here too. I'm not sure whether I'll get a gentle run in or go for a longer walk. I would go for a hike in the woods but we had some pretty big storms last night so the chances of finding downed trees is higher. I carry a folding saw so I can clear smaller stuff but if something big has come down my only options are to go over/around it, or turn back.

There was a lot of debris on the way to church from the storms by us. Gotta be careful! You never know what still might want to fall.

I had a small branch down at the end of the yard. Nothing great, just maybe 3" in diameter, but enough to throw on the lathe to see what would happen. I turned a fairly simple candlestick out of a piece. It's so wet it may yet crack and become useless, but we'll see. Maybe I'll try and make a tall thin vase out of another piece.

Ooh show a pic later!

I'm off to go hiking in a bit. It got cool outside last night so I opened up windows and now I might even have to wear a jacket on the trail! I'm so excited.

Pictures are tricky because if I take them on my phone they're too big to upload, and resizing them means fussing with transferring them from phone to laptop.
