I added a bit of a loop to my walk this morning to tip over the 30 miles total. Yesterday and today combined came in at something like 30.18 miles, which is scraping over the top but enough to count. Now my wife decided she wants to go for a walk this evening, so I needn't have added the loops.

When it's cooler I may have another attempt at my flex and get 30 miles and 50,000 steps on the first day of the month. It just needs to be a cool day that doesn't have rain forecast, and ideally a day when I get a good night's sleep so I can get a reasonably early start.

Wow, and my goal is to get back up to doing 6 miles on a hike!

Wow, and my goal is to get back up to doing 6 miles on a hike!

But I haven't had surgery, so never needed to take serious time out to recover.

After this evening's walk with my wife I've done slightly over 64,000 steps in two days, and slightly over 35 miles.

Today was notionally going to be a run day but I wanted to finish the walking badge. That makes tomorrow a run day, but it will depend on how well my legs are working. It might turn into a walk day (maybe a hike day) and kick running out to Sunday. I got a bit of extra running in last month so I only need 55 miles this month to finish off my quarterly target. Last month I had a challenge to run a 10k and this month the challenge is to run a 15k. I can do it any time during the month, so I'll pick a coolish day as early in the month as feels comfortable. I prefer to do it early so I don't find the last few days feature relentless rain. It's not the end of the world if I don't do it, but I like to tick off challenges like that.

I wasn't sure how my legs would be this morning but decided to run anyway. I figured if they complained too much I could cut the run short and turn it into a walk. I needn't have worried, I got round the route without too much trouble. Then this evening my wife wanted to do a shorter loop. So today was 5 miles of running, 3.5 miles of walking and an extra mile of general moving about.

I wish I'd known how the end of the week would have played out at the beginning of the week - if I can get 18,000 steps tomorrow I can set a new personal best for a week but if I'd thought in advance how the week would end I could have taken a chunk out of that earlier, on the days I ran my route and only came in at slightly over 10,000 steps for the day.

I hope I can get the steps tomorrow, but the weather forecast isn't great so it might not happen.

I got to 100,000 steps on day 4. The last few days it's been cooler so I've been out running more. I did my 5-mile loop three times in three days and it feels like it's steadily gettng easier to maintain a fairly baseline pace and to keep running the entire way without taking any walk breaks.

Today when I was into the final section I felt like I still had plenty in the tank so ramped up the pace for a short time. I was surprised to see that a burst of extra power shaved nearly two minutes per mile off my pace and although I wouldn't have wanted to sustain that pace for any great length of time I was surprised to see it didn't feel like a huge effort. Maybe next time I'll see what pace I can hit in an all-out sprint.

Wow!

I didn't even feel like walking today :(

Yesterday the weather was dismal so I didn't get out to run. Today the forecast was for clouds during the morning and heavy rain during the afternoon so I went for a morning run. Towards the end of the first mile my pulse was much higher than normal, which concerned me at first until I checked my pace and found I'd gone up a hill while barely slowing the pace. I got around my course in a time near my personal best - the only reason I didn't push hard for the last quarter mile to try and set a new PB was because that part is all uphill and my pulse was high enough I didn't want to overdo it.

I'm not sure whether my repeated runs at a more gentle pace have increased my baseline more than I expected, or if I just had a really good day today. I'm hoping the former but future runs will tell I guess.

Then I got home and sat dripping sweat until I cooled down.

It's been too rainy for me to feel comfortable enough to go out to walk. Getting my steps inside is really dull. Can't wait for better weather.

I hate walking indoors as well, it's so tedious. At least with music playing I can kinda sorta zone out and just keep pacing until it's done.

Debating whether to go for a walk or a gentle run today. I won't push anything hard because I did that yesterday. I'm leaning towards a gentle run.

I am so glad I went outside and felt how cool it was this morning before I went to the grocery store! I was able to do my loops (2 miles) before the sun got too high. I'm looking forward to fall weather where I don't have to go out so early in the morning.

I went for a moderately gentle run in the end. About half a mile from where I drop to a walk to cool down I still had plenty of energy left so broke into a much faster run. Much like the other day I took about two minutes per mile off the pace, although only for a bit over a quarter mile.

Now it's getting cooler I'm getting a lot more running in. As well as slowly pushing the pace up on my five mile route I want to get back to running my longer routes. It seems like it would be good to push the pace over the same distance as well as pushing the distance at a comparable pace.

I've got nearly 50 miles of running in already this month. Historically that has taken me much closer to the end of the month. Today's run wasn't quite as fast as the one a few days back but was pretty close - I think I was only a couple of seconds per mile off the pace of the faster run.

Today it was much cooler so I decided to pick off another one of the challenges my tracker presented - a 15k run. One of my routes is a whisker over 10 miles so I figured I'd run it today. It was a good run - for the first time ever I managed to run for the entire distance without needing a walk break. I wasn't attacking any speed records but since I didn't need walk breaks I did set a new personal best for that route.

Now my legs are tired.

It was definitely a cold morning! My neighbor and I walked the neighborhood so the time went by quickly today.

I wasn't sure whether to run or hike today but in the end hiking won the day. So I took in a little over eight miles in the mountains. Tomorrow I think I'll run again.

I set out for a moderate run but noticed that what felt like a moderate pace in the first half mile or so was significantly faster than I usually go. Slowing the pace slightly for the hills in the first mile still ended up being much faster than normal. My longer run last week indicated I should be able to do the shorter run faster than my personal best so I thought I'd push a bit and see what happened.

I covered the first mile much faster than I normally do, clocked the second mile much faster than normal, and so decided to push harder to aim for a new PB over the first 5k. When I crossed the 5k mark I needed to take a walk break because I'd pushed hard for the last 400 yards or so, then pressed on again and found my comfortable speed was still higher than normal.

So the end result was taking a good chunk off my 5k personal best and also taking a good chunk off my personal best for that route. Interestingly I was finding my limitation was breathing and pulse, my legs felt like they could have given more. Guess that means I need some more anaerobic work. Now it's cooler I can do more of that.

We just got back from a trip to the beach and I got around 15,000 steps both days just wandering around the boardwalk all day.

It's surprising how fast you can rack up steps at the beach. My wife and I like to walk the beach at low tide collecting shells and we've been known to go over 30,000 in a day. No great speed, just walking far enough that nobody else is out there and then just pacing looking for them.

Today I went for another hike in the woods. Not a huge hike - a little under 5 miles - but took in one of my favorite vistas. Now it's getting cooler, and I can fit in my long hiking pants, I want to start doing longer hikes again.

Trying to find a good place to eat is what racked up our steps LOL I like it that menus are put in the windows or placed outside so we can see what's to eat...and the prices!

Yes, it can be awkward if you go in and take a seat only to find the menu is unappealing or hideously expensive, or the place has a dress code and you're not even remotely suitably dressed.

One advantage of visiting a place you like again and again is that you get to know the good places to eat. Which places are cheap, which places are expensive and which of them are worth the money and which are not.
