Someone just asked me about Job. You call that a loving God? Sounds more like a North Korean tyrant to me, she said.
Made me think. The book Job always annoyed me and I skipped it, being O.T.

Satan replied, “Would Job worship you if he got nothing out of it?
Yes. That's true love if you worship someone when you only get worse from it.

In MY humble, fallible and accountable opinion....

The Book of Job is a play, a script. And the play is about one of the "universal questions" namely, why do bad things happen to good people? Why the suffering, injustice, etc. among good people? The play never attempts to "answer" the question (no Scripture does) but conveys the questions and issues that people face in that situation, and refocuses the issue away from philosophy to living (as all "Wisdom Literature" in the Bible does; it's all practical, directing us to HOW to live). The point of the play is to trust and live faithfully rather than spend all your energy sitting on your behind theorizing and complaining.

People who read Job don't always understand the big picture about God. The entire bible points to the Savior and God saving us! We aren't promised riches and happiness in this life but we ARE promised that God came to earth, died on the cross and our sins are forgiven. For those who believe (by grace through faith) they will have eternal life with Him. Therein lies the joy promised to us.

We don't want to hear how God lets bad things happen to His people. He let Adam and Eve fall. He let Cain kill Abel. He let His people remain slaves for a long period. Yet His promise of the Savior was never retracted and it's been fulfilled in His Son.

Our lives are but for a short time. Bad things might happen to us. It's awful. It's horrible. Yet, when we die, the promise of the Savior is what the faithful cling to.

I have read in some commentaries that Job, Jonah, and Tobit are novels of a sort telling a story to teach a moral lesson.

I love Job. It is all about the struggles of faith in the face of adversity. It is reassuring that through the worst of the worst, He is with us. It is a call to hang on, when this is over we will be victorious, wiser, and blessed.

I agree. It's a most profound and precious book of the Bible.
