we knew them 30 minutes after the polls closed. Labor party won in a landslide.

That's really fast! I wish we could have that here in the US.

Progressive as in supporting abortion on demand and same sex marriage?
Not especially; but why are those hot issues for you? Do you want an abortion or a same sex marriage?

Has he a dictionary to look up for a definition?

It can mean different things to different cultures.
In Australian politics, "progressive" generally refers to a political stance that prioritizes social justice, equality, evidence-based policy, and forward-thinking governance. Progressive movements and parties advocate for policies that promote economic fairness, environmental sustainability, human rights, and government transparency.

The Australian Progressives Party defines progressivism as the belief in advancements in science, technology, economic development, and social organization to improve society. They emphasize ethics, evidence-based decision-making, and empowerment to create a more equitable future. Unlike traditional left or right-wing ideologies, progressives focus on practical solutions rather than political tribalism.

Progressive policies often align with universal healthcare, education access, climate action, and anti-corruption measures. While progressive ideals can be found in various parties, including Labor and the Greens, the Australian Progressives distinguish themselves by advocating for transparent governance and reducing economic disparity.

You tell me.

If USA politics had a progressive party then why do so many Americans hate progressives? Being progressive is a good thing. Being liberal is good.

That's pretty much the same as here, all subjective goals with no real basis in a definitive definition of any of them to measure progress or exactly what end that progress will end up being since it seems to be constantly changing.

FWIW, in the US it seems that the more a politician or party advocates and promises transparency in anything the more it can be assumed that everything of any real importance will be done behind closed doors and kept secret from the voting public.

IMO.

Im a conservative and would be on the opposite side of the spectrum concerning progressive liberalism

I dont hate progressive liberals, but I oppose many of their agendas and policies, our constitution provides for freedom of speech and expression and that applies to every American
