In the US, if police feel their lives being threatened (getting hit by a moving vehicle or someone has a gun and is violent), they have the right to eliminate the threat. Think of this, what if someone isn't just a threat to the police? What if they take out those standing innocently by just watching? Then people would yell at the police for allowing that to happen, right?

In many areas private individuals have the right to use deadly force to protect themselves and others.
