“thief in the night” is a term from the scriptures that may not be something that you would think is a Hebrew mindset term. In ancient Jerusalem, the High Priest in the temple making his rounds each night to make sure the other priests were doing their duties. One of those duties was keeping the fire burning on the bazen altar at all times. The commandment in the Bible was to never allow this fire on the altar to go out (Leviticus 6:13).

If a priest was on duty to watch the fire by night, he was not allowed to fall asleep on the job, for if he did, the fire would not stay stoked and the fire could go out, thereby bringing judgment on the entire nation of Israel. The priests were also commanded not to have wine or strong drink while serving in the temple (Leviticus 10:9). Alcohol in their blood stream would defile their worship and cause them to become drunk, lazy and sleepy. Because the High Priest came at an hour when they were least expecting him to show up, the priests began to nick-name him “the thief in the night.”

If the priest on duty fell asleep and was not watching the fire on the brazen altar, the High Priest would show up and find him sleeping on the job. The High Priest would then take some hot coals from the altar, and scoop them up with a shovel. He would then dump some of these hot coals onto the priest’s garment who had fallen asleep. The priest who had fallen asleep would be suddenly awakened by the smell of hot burning coals and his garment on fire. He would immediately strip off his clothes as fast as he could in order to prevent from being burned. At the end of his shift, the other priests would see him naked without his garment, and he would be ashamed because all of the other priests would know that he was caught falling asleep on the job.


Remember Yeshua is our High Priest, in the heavenly courts today, watching over us, who are His royal priesthood here on earth. So think about this when you read about the "thief in the night". Because now you will know why Yeshua would even think to refer Himself as a "thief". So don't get caught naked because you, as part of His Royal Priesthood be neglecting your duties in ministering, minding, and serving, because you never know when Yeshua, your High Priest, will show up. We are admonished not to be like those priests who fell asleep on the job. We are given a command to watch, and keep our garments so that we will not be ashamed when our Messiah returns. Now we can better understand his warning to us in the book of Revelation:
Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

“Key of David” is seen twice in Scripture

Is 22:22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Rev 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
The Hebrew word for “key” is defined in the Strong’s Condordance as follows:

#4668 maphteach maf-tay’-akh from 6605; an opener, i.e. a key:--key; and opening instrument.

It comes from another root word:

#6605 pathach paw-thakh' a primitive root; to open wide (literally or figuratively); specifically, to loosen, begin, plough, carve:--appear, break forth, draw (out), let go free, grave, loose (self), (be, be set) opening, put off, ungird, unstop, have vent.

This word “pathach” carries with it “Yom Kippur” language because it is on this feast every 50th Year in the year of Jubilee that slaves are set free, debts are cancelled and those who lost their inheritance have it restored back to them. Synonyms for this word “pathach” have familiar language from the prophecy in Isaiah 61. Remember Yeshua, Our Messiah read from this passage in Luke 4:17-21 at the beginning of his ministry on Yom Kippur. The reason I say it was Yom Kippur is because that is the day when the year of the Jubilee would start. Isaiah 61 speaks of the day when Messiah will “proclaim liberty to the captives” and the “opening” of the prison to them that are bound. One of the first releases will be the mind from the prison/webs of deceit by which Satan holds us prisoner.

“at the last trump.” is another phrase that without knowledge of where it came from you would be guessing as to what it means. The phrase “last trumpet” does not appear in the Bible anyplace else other than in
1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The concept of the “last” works well if you understand the cycle of sevens and thus it is the “seventh trumpet” and that is first mentioned in Joshua. Leviticus 23:24 we are first told that in the “seventh month” on the Hebrew calendar we are to have “a memorial of blowing trumpets.” This and Revelation has seven trumpets and this would be our first clue that it has significant prophetic meanings which I might have to do a separate thread on because the study of trumpets is indeed a deep study in and of itself.

At each new month called “Rosh Chodesh” (head of the month) we are commanded to sound the showphar (trumpet) at the new moon. "Rosh Hashannah" or the Feast of Trumpets will start the fall feasts being fulfilled just like the spring feasts were fulfilled with Yeshua's first coming. Did you know that “Feast of Trumpets,” traditionally has four trumpets sounded at the temple to represent the four angels from the four winds of heaven and the four corners of the earth? Doesn't that also remind you of Revelation? When the last of these four trumpets is sounded in the “seventh month,” that is when the marking of God's people, signed, sealed, and delivered, and gathered like a harvest of souls by the four angels from the four corners of the earth and the four winds of heaven
Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Nothing will stop God in this work.
Rev 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

This reminded me of being on Fire Guard in the Military.
I learned to be a light sleeper. Even learned to nap standing up.

I learned to be a light sleeper. Even learned to nap standing up.

Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

What was blotted out? The word ordinance here is “dogma” in Greek which means “a man-made decree.“ What caused these man made decrees to come into existence? Probably man thinking he can go one better than God. It was our sinful nature. So it was back then. Because of pride, the Jewish Sandhedrin invented a decree that prevented the other “lost sheep” from coming near to the temple of God. These man-made ordinances were “against us” because they were added decrees not commanded by our creator in the first place. Yeshua nailed these “ordinances” (man-made traditions) inspired by the sinful nature to the tree. This is why our Messiah warned us to “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” (Matthew 16:12, Mark 8:15, Luke 12:1). We are commanded not to “add” nor “subtract” from the Torah.

Deut 4:2 You shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish ought from it, that you may keep the commandments of God which I command you.

Deut 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

A lot of you reading this thread are thinking to yourselves that there is nothing wrong with the Greek/Roman mindset. And in many cases that is true. But it is important to know what the authors of scripture were dealing with, what they understood, and how they perceived what the meaning of what they wrote meant.

I will share a little story that most of you already know but it fits with what I am trying to illustrate.

One night, a captain of a U.S. Navy warship saw the light of an oncoming vessel heading straight at him. He signaled ahead: “Change course 20 degrees.” Back came the reply: “Advisable you change course 20 degrees.” The captain didn’t accept this response and sent the message, “I’m a captain. Change course 20 degrees.” Back came the reply: “I’m a seaman second class, change course 20 degrees.” By this time the captain was furious. “I’m a battleship!,” he signaled, “Change course 20 degrees!” To which came the response: “I’m a lighthouse!”

Clearly, our presuppositions govern how we view reality and the decisions we make in life. Let us understand the Hebrew mindset, so that our decisions as to what is right or wrong is based upon a clear understanding. Let us not make ship wreck because we wouldn't obey instructions from our source of "light".. our Jewish Messiah Yeshua.

In Hebraic thought, evening twilight is understood as a transitional period between day and night. It is currently understood that it is evening twilight as long as two stars of medium magnitude are visible, but it is night upon the appearance of a third star of medium magnitude. In ancient times, some understood that night begins in a moment in time which is impossible to determine called the twinkling of an eye as the sun sets.

This is interesting as Paul prophesied that the righteous would be resurrected “in the twinkling of an eye” Paul's use of the phrase the twinkling of an eye aligns perfectly with the ancient understanding. The exact moment night begins therefore remains a little mysterious in Hebraic thought. I am wondering if the connection that Paul is making between the resurrection and twinkling of the eye also relates to the solemn assembly.

In discussing the Day of Atonement it is helpful to accurately define the word "Atonement." Atonement does not mean forgiveness of sin. It is from the Hebrew word kaphar which means, "Covering". This is the one day a year when the High Priest is to create a covering for Israel, separating the sin from the sinner forever. This covering, is the robe of righteousness, that fine linen you have been looking for.

The distinction between the Greek and the Hebrew mindset comes from the difference between doing and knowing. The Hebrew is concerned with practice. It is practical in its application of truth. The Greek are more concerned with the philosophy behind the knowledge.

Right conduct is the ultimate concern of the Hebrew. The right thinking is a major concern with the Greek and that is why Greeks get into the theos, while the Jews go, it is not for man to know. Duty and strictness of conscience are the paramount things in life for the Hebrew. The Greek, it is entertainment for the mind.

The Hebrew embody the moral virtues as the substance and meaning of life. The Greek theorizes and creates theology on these as intellectual virtues.

This contrast is between practice and theory, between the moral man and the theoretical intellectual man means two different approaches to understanding scripture and God. I think that the Hebrew is more accepting it as fact and living it, while the Greek keeps it as a theology that may be experimented in life but not necessarily embodied. "If God is all-powerful, could he build a rock too heavy for himself to lift?" is a Greek mindset type of question.

Then comes the Holy Spirit, and the Words of God become real. Theology is set aside and the application in everyday living becomes essential.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

What does it mean to "receive the word?" These Bereans are law-abiding Jews. This business of being "noble" is not being rich but about being scholars of their day. After hearing the words from Paul, searching the Word, were looking for coherence to the truth found within the words of Scripture. Since there was no new testament at this time, that would mean they are searching through the law and prophets to see if it was so. The Greek word for "searched" in this verse is "anakrino." Strong's tells us this means "to investigate, to examine closely, to judge, to interrogate, to scrutinize, to sift, to question." If any of you have conversed with the Jew you know it is like a prosecuting attorney digging for flaws in the testimony. Would your faith hold up under scrutiny? The Hebrew study of the words is five layers deep.

The four levels of understanding and interpretation of scripture are called: Parshat, Remez, D’rash and Sud. The first letter of each word P-R-D-S is used to with added vowels and pronunced PARDES (meaning "garden" or "orchard"). Each layer is deeper and more intense than the last. Line upon line, precept upon precept...

The p'shat is the plain, simple meaning of the text. The understanding of scripture in its natural, normal sense using the customary meanings of the word’s being used, literary style, historical and cultural setting, and context. They believe no verse cannot depart from its plain meaning.

An example of "REMEZ"
Proverbs 20:10 - Different weights, and different measures, both of them are alike an abomination to the Lord.
The p'shat would be concerned with a merchant using the same scale to weigh goods for all of his customers. The remez goes deeper into aspects of fairness and honesty in everyone's conduct in life.

"D'rash" is a teaching or application of the P'shat and/or Remez. Take two or more unrelated verses and combine them to create a third meaning. You still have to keep within the context of understanding both the P'shat and Remez when making a "d'rash". Scripture must be used to interpret scripture. Scriptures define the components of the "d'rash".

Sud (pronounced either sawd, or sood [like "wood"] means "hidden". This understanding is the hidden, secret or mystic meaning of a text. John used it in Rev 13:18, regarding the "beast" and the number "666."


Examples of

Remez
Matthew 2:15 - "Out of Egypt I called my son."
This is a quote from Hosea 11:1 that Matthew is applying to Yeshua. If we stuck to a literal exegesis only and researched the quote, we would have to accuse Matthew of improperly using Scripture, as Hosea is clearly speaking of the nation of Israel, and not the Messiah. Matthew however, is hinting (a remez) at the relationship between Israel and the Messiah, in this and other verses he uses.

D'rash
Matthew 18:18 - "... Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven"
This is a verse that has been interpreted in numerous (incorrect) ways due to a lack of understanding that this a d'rash concerning decisions one makes in their personal "walk with God" (called your "halakha" in Hebrew/Judaism).

Sud
Matthew 26:28 - "Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them saying, Drink from it all of you, This is my blood ..."
Taken literally this verse verse would not only be a violation of the Torah commandment against consuming blood, but along with other verses about eating Yeshua's flesh (John 6:51-56), could be grounds for accusations of cannibalism. There is a far deeper, more mystical meaning here however (the sud), even one that those who heard Him did not understand (John 6:52).

"Ehhad" is translated as "one". The Western mind sees "one" as only singular and not necessarily connected to anything else. To the Ancient Hebrew mind, nothing is "one," all things are dependent upon something else. A man is not "one," but a unity of body, bones, flesh, organs and blood. The man is also in unity with his wife and family as well as with the larger community. Even a tree is a unity of roots, trunk, branches, and leaves, which is also in unity with the surrounding landscape. "One" year is a unity of seasons. "Ehhad" is found in Genesis 1:5 where "evening" and "morning," two states of opposite function, are united to form "one" day. The Hebrew mind does not view time in a linear fashion as we Westerners do but as cyclical. So when they read Gen 1:5, they also noticed that instead of saying "first" day, the number ראשון rishon [H:7223] meaning "first" instead it used "ehhad". Yet the rest of the verses say "second", "third", "fourth" etc...and that is when the Hebrew mind travels in thought to the deeper meaning.

Let's compare the linear thinking of the Greek and the circular thinking of the Hebrew on Genesis. The Greek sees seven days one following another. That is how the Greeks take it literally as 7 24 hour events. The Hebrew sees that cycles within the week. Day 1 and day 4 are related in the separation of night and day on day 1 and on day 4 how the sun, and moon are related to the separation. Their mind circles around day 2 and 5 because day two is about atmosphere and and day five is about the things that fly in the atmosphere. 3 and 6 are also part of this cycle pattern as 3 is about land and 6 is about the animals that live on the land. Just as their Sabbaths are on a ever larger cycle, so they also see an ever larger cycle is possible for creation to come to be.

The people made their tents all over Jerusalem on every roof and as far as the eye could see and Jerusalem is a city upon a hill that is lit up with such an extreme light as to be able to see it 100 miles away. No Temple was built in such a fassion as to beam light outside of it's temple proper. But the Temple in Jerusalem beamed such extreme light that at the eve, people said,'' Behold, it is day.''


There was no court yard in Jerusalem that was not lit up by the extreme light beaming from the Temple{Talmud} and so it is called,'' The feast of lights.'' Daytime has become day as Zechaiah explains the peculiar day of the Lord when at Eve, '' Behold, it is day.''


All night long they celebrate in the lights of the temple like it was daytime and they waited upon the great water ceremony at the rising of the Sun. Isaiah speaks of this great water ceremony. It is said that nobody knows Joy until they have attended the water ceremony of the feast of tabernacles.


3 processions of priests go out.


One procession begins towards the willows and a great host of people are following the priests. They go out and collect the willows and tens of thousands with them all waving a branch that would make it sound like a great wind storm has come bringing the spirit.


One procession goes down to the pool of Siloam and the priests lead the people shouting in joy as they collect the water to bring to the temple.


Still a third procession is taking place as the priests lead a host of people to gather.


These 3 processions come shouting and waving branches creating such a noise as to make anyone not involved to stop in their place and wonder.


They come to the alter and on the alter there is two bowls built into it for the water and the wine.


These 2 bowls have holes in the bottom where the water and wine would spill out as the multitude shouted in Joy.


They brought the willows and formed a tent around the alter as they poured the wine and water and as the wine and water spilled from the sacrifice they shouted in Joy saying,'' SAVE NOW.''






This ceremony only looked to the consummation of Jesus on the cross.


Jesus let out a yell on the cross and the veil was rent in two from top to bottom in a great display of a consummation. That veil in the Temple had always represented the veil of a virgin and each year the priests came up to that veil clothed in their seed as to represent the seed themselves and yet the Temple remained a virgin.


The Temples 24 elders only pointed to the design that showed a woman, and those are her ribs.


Jesus was pierced and the water and blood flowed out on the earth as a legal witness to any consummation.


The veil rent in two just as it is with a young man and a virgin.


That great water ceremony with it's wine and the branches only pointed to a consummation and shouts of joy.


This is the witness of the covenant, the blood and the water both testify.


A wind storm from the branches of willows set up against the alter.


Isn't it strange that the greatest medicine ever found was aspirin, and aspirin comes from willows.

These 2 bowls have holes in the bottom where the water and wine would spill out as the multitude shouted in Joy.


They brought the willows and formed a tent around the alter as they poured the wine and water and as the wine and water spilled from the sacrifice they shouted in Joy saying,'' SAVE NOW.''






This ceremony only looked to the consummation of Jesus on the cross.


Jesus let out a yell on the cross and the veil was rent in two from top to bottom in a great display of a consummation. That veil in the Temple had always represented the veil of a virgin and each year the priests came up to that veil clothed in their seed as to represent the seed themselves and yet the Temple remained a virgin.


The Temples 24 elders only pointed to the design that showed a woman, and those are her ribs.


Jesus was pierced and the water and blood flowed out on the earth as a legal witness to any consummation.


The veil rent in two just as it is with a young man and a virgin.


That great water ceremony with it's wine and the branches only pointed to a consummation and shouts of joy.


This is the witness of the covenant, the blood and the water both testify.


A wind storm from the branches of willows set up against the alter.


Isn't it strange that the greatest medicine ever found was aspirin, and aspirin comes from willows.
