My OWN current evaluation of this topic is that IMO, neither side of the "paedo-baptism" debate has an open and shut "slam-dunk" (not-too-many doctrinal positions are, lol). I DO believe that the paedo side is far stronger (in fact, many of the arguments against it trouble me far more than simply the disagreement with it).

But for ME, the pastor in the video makes the most important point in his first. Often, this all comes down to whether we see Christianity as blessings from God, what God does for us..... or "hoop jumping" and what we must do for God? While gifts and obedience are no doubt both important, Christians (ESPECIALLY in justification) tend to begin with one said for the other.

Another point that is key for me is one he doesn't present: Tradition. By that, I don't mean the Roman Catholic concept.... nor do I mean customs and practices..... I mean the ancient, universal, ecumenical consensus of God's people, the Church. While the rejection of this does have "roots," the overwhelming (stunningly overwhelming) majority until the Anabaptists came along in the 16th Century was for not forbidding infants. The whole people of God were VERY, VERY united on this..... for many, many centuries..... Now, on it's own, that would not bring great weight, but in addition to the Scriptures that seem strongly in favor of this... together with Tradition..... I think we have something compelling. Not so much that I would regard rejector to be "heretics" ( we COULD agree to disagree) but certainly strong enough to take the paedo-baptism stance.

A long time ago I read a book written by a Dutch chap from a small reformed church (at the time it was called The Protestant Reformed Church) the book's name was Believers and their Seed and it had a follow up written by another chap from the same church. The name of the follow up was We and our Children. I think both books are still available. They are worth reading.

What is the difference between baptizing infants and dedicating the child to be brought up in a christian way? I know that when they are dedicated they are baptized at a later date according to their own dedication to Christ. Is it the same with infant baptism? Is there a ceremony that they go thru to dedicate themselves after leaving their parents ?

Baptism is what the bible calls it and "dedication" is what some other folk call it when they intend to baptise later.

Could you describe what happens in a dedication?

My understqanding is that you dedicate that child to the Lord and agree to raise him or her with a Christian upbringing and to be faithful in this

We once had a dedication service. Lol that guy who pastored just came from the Roberts Liardon Bible school and was all into kicking demons out. Only songs we had was warfare songs. Then he had to dedicate a baby and someone made a pic. LOL that baby and him kicking in the air cause he just said you should give the devil a kick. I'll never forget. Nice pics for later lolz.
Then we got another pastor who was the opposite. All of a sudden we only sang kids songs, is your door still locked, kggg kgggg kgggg open it for God.

It emcompasses dedication of the parents to action.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only true God!
So love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.
Memorize his laws
and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time,
whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.

"Baby Dedication" is a very new Christian custom (so folks who reject infant BAPTISM can still do something special with the kiddos).... It is an Old Testament issue of obedience (a Law issue) which simply indicates that children actually belong to God but are entrusted to their earthly parents for upraising. This Jewish legal issue was incorporated into the Christian Baptism.

"Baby Dedication" was never a blessing, never a divine act. It never did anything.

It's a great thing. It's best to dedicate before birth. Hanna did it. If you have to turn it into a ceremony I don't know.

The OP was a good explanation on one perspective from a Lutheran pastor, ..... I don't know if all agree.
I think if ppl want to do that with their babies, that's fine, ..... Dedication is too. Anytime ppl want to devote their lives and family to the Lord Jesus Christ I believe is a good thing.

I would disagree with the RCatholic priests position in post#5 , when he states infant baptism replaces circumcision in order to enter into covenant with God.

That is simply replacing one work of righteousness for another. Circumcision was given by God to His chosen ppl as a sign they were His. For a baby, It shouldn't be done before the 8th day, not enough vitamin K production, the baby could bleed to death (plus other reasons as well).
God knows what He's doing.

Adults were circumcised as well, but I don't fully understand why, and not at all how! Ouch.

In the new covenant, we're not saved or entered in by signs or law-keeping ceremonies, (not that Abraham was, either) but by grace through faith, and it was Jesus that kept/fulfilled the law and prophets and established the New Covenant FOR us.
See Hebrews10 and many other places.
Also see Rom2:29 and 10:4. Good buddy.

The guy in videopost#6 I kind of feel sorry for. It's great if he has a love for Jesus, he seems sincere, but he's so into religious bondage.
He seems to be breathing a sigh of relief, but not so much because Jesus saved him, but bc he became a Roman Catholic.
And he said he wanted to 'keep Jesus in his mouth for five minutes' before he what, swallowed him and it was over?! Is that what he actually said? Or he was taught it and so believes? Where do they get this stuff?!

That was a great video, Josiah!! I took notes for those who don't have time to listen.

1. Baptism is a work of God

  • Baptismal verses in the bible point to God doing things in baptism
    [*=1]Acts 2:38
    [*=1]Acts 22:16
    [*=1]John 3:5
    [*=1]1 Peter 3:4
    [*=1]Romans 6:34

2. Infants are sinners

  • Baptism is always connected to forgiveness of sins
  • Psalm 51:5
  • Romans 3:23

3. Infants can believe
  • Faith is a gift of God and the Holy Spirit can give it to whoever He wants
    • John the Baptist Luke 1:41
    • Psalm 22:9-10
    • Psalm 71:5-6
    • Luke 18:15-17 Jesus praises faith of children brought to Him

4. Households are baptized
  • Lydia Acts 16:15
  • Philippian Jailor Acts 16:33-34
  • Stephanus 1 Corinthians 1:16
  • Cornelius Acts 11:14
  • When someone receives the gift of faith they bring their entire family for baptism

5. God includes children in His gracious promise

  • See this throughout the Old Testament
  • Abraham > Circumcision for infants too
  • Colossians 2:11 Baptism is the new great fulfillment of circumcision, this brings infants into the new covenant. The new covenant brings in more people than the Old Testament covenant.

Polycarp (69-155 AD), a disciple of the Apostle John, was baptized as an infant. History shows that early Christians were having their babies baptized.

Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward reality,
not a means to have our sins forgiven.
Too often the religious ppl simply trade one set of works or religious practices/rituals, for another, and make the Old and New Covenants seem like two sides of the same coin, the Jewish side and the 'Christian' side.
That is, like the ppl of the Old had to do THIS to keep covenant with God, and now 'christians' have to do THIS to keep covenant with God.
Almost as if it's the same covenant with different things to do.

Water-baptism doesn't bring anyone into the New Covenant, infant or adult.
Hebrews7:22 That is good to know.
The New Covenant is in Christ Jesus, not our religious rituals.

22By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and othen for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. 28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
8 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2 A minister of ethe sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. 3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. 4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. 6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. 8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Hebrews7:22-8:13

If ppl want to water-baptise themselves or their babies as a sign of what Jesus did for them, or even if they believe it's an act of obedience that THEY MUST keep, then fine, let them, as long as they're not insisting on it for others, or claiming it's a thing we must do to 'enter into the New Covenant', or tell others they're not if they don't do it. That misses what Jesus did on the cross, and the Covenant HE established for us.
