Do you bring your bible to church?

I heard a comment lately from a pastor who said he was sad that Lutherans don't bring their bibles to church. Well, we don't have to because the bible is in our pews at my church and they pass them out for bible study at the tables. We have the readings printed out in our bulletins too to refer to when pastor mentions them in his sermons.

Yes I do because I prefer the ESV over the NIV which is what my very small church has. I use it for Bible Study.

I'd probably bring something too, if the NIV was all that was to be found in the pews!

Fortunately, that's not the case. The church officially uses the KJV, and that's the version used during the liturgy/service itself as well as for the readings of the Epistle and Gospel.

Bible study would of course be a different matter.

I bring my phone to Bible Study (no need for a book; it's an app on my phone). In church, the four lessons and sermon text are printed out in the bulletin and up on the screen. But of course, IF we were ever asked to look up a reference (and I don't recall that ever being done), I've got my phone.

I used to but now I just use my phone when I can. Usually by the time I find the reading they’re already reading it,

Because all of the Pastors I have in my life and who have studied Greek and Hebrew find that it is a better translation.

The two versions are considered to be about equal so far as accuracy is concerned.

The NIV specializes in everyday language and comes across, therefore, as plodding. Some would say "flat"or slimmed-down--like reading the instructions on some package. That wasn't the intention of the translators, of course.

The ESV is another of the translations that's an easier read than the KJV, but unlike the NIV, the ESV's wording retains a good amount of the dignity and beauty that people like about the KJV.

I guarantee you...if that is what you do, you do not study the Bible. You just 'google' your Bible information.

A sad testimony, but not surprising, seeing the ignorance that so many Christians display concerning the Bible.

But...don't say that because you will be labeled a 'hate monger'.

If I go to church I carry a Bible. I open it to what the pastor/teacher is addressing. And I listen to see if what he is saying is true.

I guess that thwarts the devil's cunning plan to lead people astray by having different text in the phone app than in the Real Bible (TM), and by putting the wrong words on the screen so people think it says something it doesn't really say.

But, but, but, they can't be the same because they are some newfangled technology that clearly isn't as good as the original. Maybe we should get rid of these silly paper Bibles and go back to using scrolls, just to be safe.

It could be a bit tedious carrying lots of scrolls to church - you never know when the preacher might make reference to a passage of Scripture that's related to the main reading but in a different book - but it's a small price to pay for Not Being Led Astray By Technology, no?

Actually, it's a matter of convenience to have a bible on the phone so that they can carry the kid, the diaper bag and whatever else they need for the service. They know they won't leave a bible behind when it's on their phones.

What a lame excuse. Christians have dealt with that for centuries. And with no complaints about having to carry their Bible to church.

I have forgot my Bible at church a few times. Guess what? I go back and it's right where I left it.

I don't doubt it's a matter of convenience. Certainly wouldn't want to inconvenience a Christian in carrying a Bible to church.

I have the entire Bible online on my phone as an app but occasionally bring the physical bible with me if I’m going to read some verses to others - I feel the physical book is easier to use with bookmarks at the verses.
