Jesus seemed to have implied that yes, all those who believe in Him are able to cast out demons, while the incident with the two Jewish brothers from Acts seems to indicate that it takes more than having faith to cast out demons. What are your thoughts on the matter?

That's an interesting question. I'm not sure? I know personally I wouldn't trust just any Christian and I'd go to a pastor or priest trained in exorcisms...yes, there is training! I don't trust the tent revival guys or the tv guys who make a big show because they're proven to be so fake.

[Mat 10:5-10 NASB] 5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in [the] way of [the] Gentiles, and do not enter [any] city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 8 "Heal [the] sick, raise [the] dead, cleanse [the] lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. 9 "Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a bag for [your] journey, or even two coats, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support.

[Mar 6:7-13 NASB] 7 And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; 8 and He instructed them that they should take nothing for [their] journey, except a mere staff--no bread, no bag, no money in their belt-- 9 but [to] wear sandals; and [He added,] "Do not put on two tunics." 10 And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. 11 "Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them." 12 They went out and preached that [men] should repent. 13 And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

[Luk 9:1-3 NASB] 1 And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. 3 And He said to them, "Take nothing for [your] journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not [even] have two tunics apiece.

[Luk 10:1-4, 17-20 NASB] 1 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was saying to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 "Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 "Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. ... 17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." 18 And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven."
  • A specific instruction for a specific mission to specific individuals.
  • Not universally applicable to all Christians in all times and places (unless you believe that we are forbidden to preach to any non-Jews, or to accept any money, or to own more than the clothes on our back).
  • This particular casting out of demons was to ‘prove’ that the Kingdom of God was at hand.

[Mar 3:13-15 NASB] 13 And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He [could] send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons.
  • Again we have a clear link between Jesus appointing twelve very specific people and Jesus granting those same people the authority to cast out demons.
  • There is nothing here to suggest that all Christians are called out to be Apostles or that all Christians have the authority to cast out demons.

[Mar 9:38-41 NASB] 38 John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us." 39 But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40 "For he who is not against us is for us. 41 "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as [followers] of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

[Luk 9:49-50 NASB] 49 John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us." 50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder [him;] for he who is not against you is for you."
  • Here we have a very different situation: some casting out demons that is not Jesus or one of the 12 specifically given authority by Jesus to cast out demons.
  • We must be careful with what this says and what this does not say.
    • Jesus said not to stop him.
    • Jesus did not say that He had given him authority to cast out demons.
  • The “non-Apostle” casting out demons MAY have been given authority by Jesus, in which case it would suggest that other non-Apostle Christians might be given authority by Jesus to cast out demons
  • The “non-Apostle” casting out demons MAY be one of those people that Jesus will ultimately claim “I never knew you.”
  • This passage does not tell us which was the case for this man, so we cannot know his heart for certain.
  • (Josiah should like this part) ... this is one of the Mysteries in the Bible known for certain only to God.

[Mar 16:14-20 NASB] 14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining [at the table;] and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly [poison,] it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." 19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.] [[And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.]]
  • Things are going to get bumpy here.
  • First we must acknowledge that the earliest manuscripts end at verse 8, so all of verses 9-20 may not be original to Mark. I am not qualified to argue textural validity of early manuscripts, so we will accept these passages as Scripture with an asterisk that they MAY (very small chance) have been altered by later copyists.
  • OBSERVATION: v.15 This was a command to the eleven Apostles.
  • OBSERVATION: v.20 The casting out of demons was a sign of confirmation everywhere the Apostles went.
  • v.18 “These signs will accompany those who believe” ... we have two obvious possible interpretations of what this says:
    • Every individual believer will display each and every one of the listed signs
    • These signs will manifest among the collective body of all believers, but each individual believer may have any one or even none of the signs.
    • There are people that hold to each of these positions.
  • Since there are other verses that tell us that there is one Spirit that distributes spiritual gifts as He chooses and not all have the gift of tongues, I see no way that this passage can mean that every Christian will have all of those signs.
  • So the casting out of demons is:
    1. A sign for the church to confirm the Word of the Gospel
    2. NOT a universal ability of all Christians without exception.
    3. Potentially a sign which the church can still exercise (only God knows for sure).
    4. Also potentially a sign that was meant to confirm the office and authority of an Apostle (only God knows for sure).

So having reviewed the Scripture, what is my final conclusion on the question “Can all believers cast out demons”?

Probably not.
  • God certainly can cast out demons.
  • Jesus can grant men the authority to cast out demons (and has).
  • Everyone does not have all of the spiritual gifts, rather the Holy Spirit distributes them as God pleases.
  • If someone is going to stand on Mark 16:17-18 as proof that THEY can cast out demons because all Christians can do all these things, then I suggest that they work up to casting out a demon:
    1. They should demonstrate that they can speak to someone fluently in another language that they have never studied (like what happened in Acts 2).
    2. Then they should visit a hospital and clear out a ward by healing the sick.
    3. At this point they should have a faith strong enough to drink poison without harm.
    4. Only after mastering the gifts over the physical world, should they attempt to battle the dark powers, principalities and rulers of this age in the spiritual realm.
That’s my opinion.

My thoughts are that it isn't advisable for a Christian to go toe-to-toe with a demon or demons. You need years of special training in spiritual matters as complex as this.

I think this question has an answer that is, in its own way, both simple and complex.

I think that all believers who have the Holy Spirit can cast out demons. That said I think there's an awful lot of showmanship among the "travelling revival" types who are frankly doing little more than peddling snake oil. The kind of people who make a big show of speaking to the huge crowd and asking "who here has a demon they want cast out?" and inviting people to go forward for an exorcism, in front of the (fully packed) arena of people, are probably not doing anything useful at all. The people going forward may be placed stooges, they may be people who see a demon behind every corner (the ones who break their diet on the first day and blame it on a demon, for example) or whatever else.

We shouldn't be going out of our way looking for demons to cast out. If we are presented with a demon I believe we have authority over it in the name of Jesus but we should be aware of how our own walk with Christ looks. If we are faithfully attending church every Sunday and putting on a good show for everyone else in the congregation but our prayer life isn't great and we've allowed ourselves to become comfortable with sin in our life, we're probably not in a good place to tackle such a fight.

I remember reading an interesting analysis of Paul's analogy of putting on the armor of God, and how the only weapon was the sword. The analysis talked of how the sword typically carried by a Roman centurion was a short sword, suitable for short-range defensive fighting. It's very easy to get a grandiose picture of a Christian as a lone warrior, rippling with muscle and wielding a huge sword as they fight back the powers of darkness. In practise the analogy of the Roman with his armor and sword makes a lot more sense - we're better suited to fighting as a group and fighting the things that attack us rather than going out looking to pick a fight with something.

Luke 10:19 shows Jesus saying how he gave the disciples authority to trample snakes and scorpions and all the powers of the enemy. We could discuss whether that is also meant for us today but if we go too far down that route we have to also ask whether the call to go into the world and preach the gospel applies to us today. 1Jn 4:4 says that he who is within us is greater than he who is within the world.

So I guess the short form of that is "yes, but know yourself first".

Yes of course Christians will be: Mighty about the casting out of demons! It is not listed in the fruits or gifts of the Spirit, so it is for all believers.

You must of course
be saved under the Blood of Jesus. You must have faith in Jesus concerning the casting out of demons and breaking curses and bondages. You must call on the Name Jesus in every spiritual encounter, Foolish and defeated is anyone doing otherwise.
When in the process of casting out or breaking bondages always specify entities by name or definitive description, not in general terms, Aim these prayers with a laser focus on the evil.

It's true we don't know the power of the forces we are fighting unless the Lord gives instructions, We will apply continuous prayers against the evil, to the Lord till desired results and relief to the victim has been achieved. Groups of people, prayer warriors can be used against most formidable entities. Continuous prayer vigils over days, people in different locations, praying in unison till results are achieved.

Many Christians are under attack (not possessions), even things their not aware of; generational and other type cursed that this casting-out process can be used.

For a person just ate up by fear here's an example:

I cast out the demon of anxiety, fear, and worry out of this person, never to return in the name of
Jesus!

@jswauto, I once witnessed the sermon of a Christian evangelist in a Pentecostal service, when the crowd's "speaking in tongues" drowned out him out. At the end of that chaos, he invited people to come forward for healing. He prayed over a blind person that the devil would come out of her in Jesus' name. It didn't happen. Therefore, he tried again; it still didn't happen. Then, he suggested that she come to his next stop, and he would try again.

That experience made me skeptical about such public displays of people's supposed gifts, since they were also disobeying Paul's guidelines in Romans 14 about the use of tongues.

It's sad when this sort of thing happens, it doesn't take very many kooks and charlatans to smear the reputation of the genuine.

Sadly whenever there's an opportunity for some glory there's someone tempted to take it for themselves. Hence the people who claim to have special revelations, special gifts, who plan things that only God can do, and the like. I've often wondered about the "teachers" (I use the word in the loosest possible context) who announce well ahead of time that they are hosting a meeting where they will spend a certain amount of time prophesying. Because, you know, we can decide ahead of time when God will speak to us, right?

Here's the scripture I think Lucian was referring to about vagabond Jews attempting exorcism:

Acts 19:

13Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

Please don't follow these techniques. These spiritual entities have real power to dismantle your life. Calling upon the name of the Lord always. follow the Lord's instructions performing these operations.

The term cast out is the same word used in reference to casting out demons (ekballo). Take spiritual responsibility for your life. Don’t depend on everyone else for your spiritual well-being. Confess the Word over your life. Pray strong prayers that rout the enemy. Do not allow self-pity to hold you back. Stir yourself up to prayer.

Deliverance is the children’s bread. Every child of God has a right to enjoy the benefits of deliverance. Deliverance brings freedom and joy. We have seen thousands of believers set free from demons through authoritative prayer. Deliverance is a miracle ministry. You will see multiplied miracles through warfare prayer. The breakthroughs you will see are supernatural. Healings will multiply.

Here's a story of deliverance: (Smith Wigglesworth)

The baptism

After I had received the Baptism of the Holy ghost (and I know that I received; for the Lord gave me the
Spirit in just the same way as He gave Him to the disciples at Jerusalem), I sought the mind of the Lord
as to why I was baptized. One day I came home from work and went into the house and my wife asked
me, 'Which way did you come in?" I told her that I had come in at the back door. She said, "There is a
woman upstairs and she has brought an old man of eighty to be prayed for. He is raving up there and a
great crowd is outside the front door, ringing the door-bell and wanting to know what is going on in the
house." The Lord quietly whispered, "This is what I baptized you for."
I carefully opened the door of the room where the man was, desiring to be obedient to what my Lord
would say to me. The man was crying and shouting in distress, "I am lost! I am lost! I have committed
the unpardonable sin. I am lost! I am lost!" My wife said, "Dad, what shall we do?" The Spirit of the
Lord moved me to cry out, "Come out, thou lying spirit." In a moment the evil spirit went, and the Lord
said to me, "This is what I baptized you for."

This procedure to be used when people ask for deliverance

5-Step Deliverance: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Casting Out Demons

Spiritual WarfareSupernaturalSpiritual Growth

Excerpted from Devil, Come Out!
So practically, what does the process of deliverance look like?
Well, it is generally the same for all those who make an appointment to come to our office. We prepare a private space at the church so we will not be interrupted or overheard (we always lock the doors). We have tissues, water, and a sick bucket, and we make sure we are prayed up as ministers, as we dare not even attempt to do anything without the assurance of the anointing and the presence of God. It doesn’t mean we spend hours in prayer before a deliverance, but it means we check in with the Holy Spirit to know and be assured of whose authority we are walking in and whose name we are using! We aim to have a team of at least three people. There will be one person who leads, and the others will support and speak in tongues quietly. We will always interact with one another. If one person hears from the Holy Spirit, we will allow that person to take the lead for a moment to call out the spirit, or they may just want to let the person leading know. Either way, the calling out of demons is done in an orderly fashion, calmly but forcibly and in unity.

There are five parts to a straightforward deliverance: counsel/talking, praying the prayer, breaking hereditary curses/bloodline ties, renouncing, and casting out. There are three things, however, that we require first from the person who is asking for deliverance. Number one, they must be honest—they cannot hide sins, hurts, or pain, past or present. We’re bringing everything into the light. Satan is a legalist. He knows the word of God backward and forward, inside and out. If sins are hidden or you are too embarrassed to say what has happened to you, his demons are not going anywhere; they have a right to remain because the sin remains in the darkness.

Second, they cannot have unforgiveness in their heart toward anyone or anything. Satan knows the word and he knows if they won’t forgive, he doesn’t have to go anywhere, he can legally demonize them.
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6:14-15 NKJV).
And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses (Mark 11:25 NKJV).
Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, “I repent,” you shall forgive him (Luke 17:3-4 NKJV).
Forgiveness may not always affect the person who has hurt you, but it will always affect you! When you forgive, you release all power that Satan has over your life. You shut the door in his face, giving God access to bless you. Forgiveness also allows God to intervene in the situation, whereas unforgiveness ties His hands! If you don’t let go but hold that person to account yourself, God cannot do anything. This is why it is vital that people forgive when receiving deliverance.

Third is the most necessary thing—they must be desperate! They cannot have an attitude of “I’ll give it a go and see what happens” or think “If it doesn’t work, I’ll try something else.” Just like the woman with the issue of blood, they must be all in and so desperate to get free that they don’t care what they look like or who sees them!

As I have mentioned before, I believe in counseling, and this is where it is used during deliverance. The first part is talking and investigating how doors were opened in the first place. Quite often within ten minutes we will identify many of the root causes, the hows and the whys. It is often a shock to the person, yet at the same time the penny drops for them and for the first time in their lives they realize why they have been struggling with certain issues for so long. Everything all at once makes sense! I cannot overemphasize the importance of this part of the deliverance ministry, and even before we move to the second part, people begin to receive their deliverance.
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16 NKJV).
This process is all about bringing to the light what has been hidden. Satan has power because he’s the hidden evil behind all sickness and disease. When we expose him or his schemes, he loses his power to control, and it’s almost as if the demons lose their grip to hold on to a person. I describe it as the truth being like oil—the demons have nothing to hook their claws into any longer. When you confess sin or sins that have been committed against you, deliverance and healing immediately begin.

Once we have established all of this and the person is able to bring to light all that they can remember, we will move on to the prayer, which is the second part of the deliverance. The prayer covers several things that are necessary for deliverance. We use the same prayer that one of my favorite ministers on deliverance, Dr. Derek Prince, used. We ask the person to repeat the prayer audibly after one of us, line by line.
Lord Jesus Christ, I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again from the dead.
You redeemed me by Your blood, and I belong to You, and I want to live for You.
I confess all my sins, known and unknown. I’m sorry for them all; I renounce them all.
I forgive all others as I want You to forgive me. Forgive me now and cleanse me with Your blood.
I thank You for the blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses me now from all sin.
And I come to You now as my deliverer.
You know my needs, every spirit that binds, that torments, that defiles.
That evil spirit, that unclean spirit. I claim the promise of Your word:
Whosoever that calls on the Name of the Lord shall be delivered.
I call upon You now.
In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me and set me free.
Satan, I renounce you and all your works.
I loose myself from you in the Name of Jesus, and I command you to leave me right now, in Jesus’ Name.

Amen.
There are several important points this prayer covers—the first is salvation, making sure the person is born again. If they’re not, then we take this opportunity for them to receive Jesus into their hearts. Second, they forgive all others. As we’ve already discussed, the demons are not going anywhere unless there is forgiveness. Sometimes they find it very difficult to say this part, but we labor on it if we must and make them say the names of the people they need to forgive. Many times, they will say it through gritted teeth or with tears streaming down their faces, but you must make sure they say this part. I will often encourage a person that even if they don’t feel like it, everything we do as believers is by faith anyway, and this is just something else they are doing by faith regardless of how they are feeling.

Third, they renounce the demons! This part is very powerful and even after the prayer we will get them to renounce emotions that have bound them (demonic spirits). The definition for the word renounce is “to repudiate; disown; to give up or put aside; to give up by formal declaration; to deny, disavow, discard, recant, cast off, divorce oneself from.”

When the person being delivered renounces fear, guilt, shame, hatred, death, etc., we can then call those demons out because the person has vocally expressed that they no longer want them in their life or want to partner with them anymore! The demons must obey and leave.
After they have said the prayer, we will instruct them to stand up and open their mouth slightly. Demons only come out one way, and that’s through the mouth because they are spirit beings, like breath. Sometimes we will explain the manner of manifestation in which the demons will come out; other times we will just stay quiet. It’s not a part of everyday normal life for most people, and so we never want to make them feel nervous about what is about to happen. We just allow the Holy Spirit to lead us through it all from beginning to end, even guiding what we say or what we don’t say.

The third part is when we break every hereditary curse coming down from their ancestors or through their bloodline. This again is a very important part of deliverance, which I addressed in the early part of my book. At this point we also break any unhealthy soul ties, whether they be sexual, emotional, or physical, again being led completely by the Holy Spirit.

This procedure to be used when people ask for deliverance

5-Step Deliverance: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Casting Out Demons (Continued)

The fourth part is where all the action generally happens, although many times at the point of breaking hereditary curses, the demons will start manifesting. We will have the person renounce all that they have spoken about, the things that have burdened them for years; it could be rejection, rebellion, addiction, hatred, idle words, abandonment, etc. Once they have done this, we will then make a statement like this:
Every demon attached to everything they have renounced, we command you to come out now in Jesus’ Name, out now!

Immediately, demons will start to manifest. Sometimes we will have to call them again and remind them that the person has renounced them and they can no longer stay. Demons hate to leave because it means they no longer have a body to use, which in turn means they cannot stay on the earth. They will try to hide, go quiet, or sometimes pretend they have gone! Through experience we are aware of all their tricks and know when they have really left.

There is always a mixture of manifestations. People may cough, retch, shout, contort, spin, crawl, jump, swing out, use expletive language, they may even burp demons out! Whatever way, I never cease to be amazed; demons are like petulant chil- dren who hate being told what to do. It’s almost as if they stamp their feet and whine—they will cry and pretend to be the person to avoid being expelled, they will even hide in a body part and the person being delivered will suddenly get a pain in that area. This is how we know where they are—the person may say, “My head is pounding,” “My back is aching,” or, “I can’t move my fingers.” We will just command them to leave or sometimes we will touch that area and almost immediately they move and come out. Some deliverance ministers prefer not to touch those being delivered; for us, we find this very effective when led by the Holy Spirit.

Demons will even make the person fall asleep by pretending they are free and are just resting. When they really don’t want to go, they will try to argue their case, why they should stay. For me personally, I don’t engage in much conversation with demons. On occasion I will question the demon if the situation requires it, but demons are liars, so much of what they say is nonsense anyway. The normal verbiage from a demon is, “No, I won’t leave,” “She is mine,” “I’m going to kill him.” Sometimes they cackle and laugh in your face, mocking you. I will always close this stuff down straightaway and take control. If I am feeling particularly annoyed with the demon, I may tell it to shut up and get out. Normally, I will give instructions, especially when the demons won’t allow the person to open their mouths. I will say something like, “Allow him to speak,” or if they are rolling all over the floor and being particularly demonstrative, I will say, “Stop now and get up!” This may all sound a little strange, and at first it was weird interacting with these evil spirits in this way, but when you recognize where they come from and the evil and misery they cause people, you understand why Jesus instructed us to do this. We are literally carrying out His command, which He has anointed us to do!

Now I want to give you instruction on self-deliverance. If you recognize that you personally need deliverance, you can do one of two things—you can make an appointment and ask a minister who is familiar with casting out demons to pray for you, or you can deal with it right now! I will say, having someone else pray for you initially is the best course of action (plus it reduces any probability that you have pride in your heart), but it is good to start the process off and deal with things the moment you recognize you have demons.
It’s four simple steps.

The first step is to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you those doors that were opened in your life, giving access to the demons. Ask Him to give you discernment to know what demons they are. Once you have this information, then the second step is to pray the prayer. The third step is to renounce them. Remember, these are deep emotional struggles that you feel in the pit of your stomach, the emotions or addictions that continually harass you.

Renounce the demons, addressing them directly, and command them to go in Jesus’ Name. Then, step four, you start to exhale and breathe them out. You may feel weird in your stomach or throat; you may start coughing or spitting up phlegm. Whatever happens, don’t get freaked out! Demons go out in all manner of ways.
Let me give you this example so that you know you are doing it correctly. If the Holy Spirit has revealed to you that it is a spirit of self-hatred, insecurity, low self-esteem, then you would say something like this:
I renounce the spirit of self-hatred, of insecurity and low self-esteem, and in the Name of Jesus I command each one of you to leave me now! Out in Jesus’ Name!

You may need to repeat this process several times. You should have a lighter feeling on the inside of you as if a heavy weight has been lifted off your chest, shoulders, head, or out of your stomach area. You should also be able to think a lot more clearly! Now take a moment to spend with the Holy Spirit, ask Him to fill you afresh, start to worship, and give God thanks for His goodness.

Steps for Casting out demons:

1) PLUGGING into the POWER SOURCE

Our source of power is the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. We build ourselves up in faith when we confess the Word of God. We experience greater confidence when we understand the Word and walk in revelation. Prayer plugs us into the power source. Prayer connects us to God and allows His power to flow to us in any situation. Salvation is the basis for warfare. The new birth is a necessity. A believer also needs the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Are you born again? Do you know beyond a doubt that you are saved? Believers must live holy lives that are submitted to the Holy Spirit. We are commanded to walk in the Spirit. Th is will assure us of continual victory and breakthroughs for others. We can revenge disobedience when our obedience is fulfilled. Jesus cast out devils through the power of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:28). The Holy Spirit was the source of His power and wisdom. This section of prayers that teach us how to plug into the power source—God’s Holy Spirit and God’s Word—is not for religious people. These are not religious prayers that begin to work when someone recites them. These prayers are for born-again believers who desire to see the growth of the kingdom of God. We are told to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Eph. 6:10). We walk and war in His strength. This requires humility and total dependence upon God. We are not confident in our own strength. We cannot allow pride to open the door for destruction.

The Lord is a man of war (Exod. 15:3). He will fight our battles. We depend upon His power and direction. We depend upon His Word and His Spirit. I cannot overemphasize the need for humility. God gives grace to the humble. The Lord is the strength of my life. This gives me the ability to overcome all fear. I will put my trust in Him. This was the key to David’s victories. David was a king who knew how to depend upon the Lord. David won many battles and overcame all of his enemies. The Lord taught David how to war (Ps. 144:1). He will also teach you how to war. You must depend on Him. The prayers and strategies were learned from years of warring and trusting in God. God taught us how to war using His Word. The Holy Spirit opened our eyes to great truths, and we are still learning. God was David’s power source. He confessed that the Lord was his strength. David was a man of prayer and worship. He enjoyed the Lord’s presence. The Lord’s presence was David’s source of joy and strength. His songs were powerful prophetic weapons against the enemy. There is no substitute for a life of praise and worship. Every believer needs to belong to a church that is strong in praise and worship. There are many great warriors being trained in the school of the Holy Spirit. They are humble people who had to depend upon God for breakthrough. They had to connect with the Lord, who is the greatest warrior. They learned through experience and sometimes through failure. Like these great warriors for God, if we call upon the Lord, He will show us great and mighty things. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. A sword is used in war. The Lord will teach you how to use this sword. You will use it against the spiritual enemies of your soul. You will see great victories as you use it correctly. Most of the prayers in this book have a scriptural reference. I would encourage you to look at the verses and meditate on them. The Word of God is our source of wisdom. We operate in God’s wisdom to defeat the powers of hell. Confessing the Word of God is an important part of every believer’s spiritual life. Christianity is called the great confession. Salvation comes from confessing with the mouth. The mouth is connected to the heart. The Word of God released from your mouth will be planted in your heart. Faith is released from the mouth. The mouth can only release what is in the heart. Faith in the heart that is released through the mouth can move mountains. God is the source of all our victories and breakthrough. He is the source of our wisdom and strategies. His Word is the source for our understanding of the warfare in which we are involved. Our warfare originates in the heavens. We bind what is already bound in the heavens. We loose what is already loosed in the heavens. God has illuminated many scriptures to us over the years of being involved in deliverance and warfare. These scriptures have been invaluable in helping us experience breakthrough.

The Word of God is a treasure chest of wisdom and knowledge. It contains an abundance of revelation for every believer. Every believer who desires to enjoy liberty and victory must take time to study the Word of God and ask for revelation. One of the most important group of prayers in this section are those called “Prayers for Revelation.” When I began to pray these prayers, the results were dramatic. I began to see truths in the Word of God that I had never seen. Revelation is the key to authority. Peter received the keys of the kingdom after he received the revelation that Jesus was Christ (Matt. 16:16). God has promised to make us joyful in the house of prayer (Isa. 56:7). God’s house is called a house of prayer for all nations. I believe we should not only pray but also enjoy prayer. The joy of the Lord is our strength. Prayer should yield an abundance of miracles and rewards. Those who enjoy the results of prayer will enjoy an exciting life.

Steps for Casting out demons: (Continued)

2) PREPARING to ENGAGE the ENEMY

What makes a person successful in spiritual warfare? Some of the qualifications include:

Endurance (2 Tim. 2:3)—the ability to endure and withstand hardship, adversity, or stress. We are to endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Hatred (Ps. 139:22)—extreme dislike or antipathy, loathing. In spiritual warfare, we must have a hatred of evil and evil spirits.

Knowledge (2 Cor. 2:11)—we are not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices.

Persistence (Ps. 18:37)—the ability to go on resolutely or stubbornly in spite of oppression. We must be persistent in dealing with the enemy.

Separation (2 Tim. 2:14)—to get or keep apart. No man who wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life.

God uses ordinary people to accomplish His purposes. Our ability comes through grace. Every believer is sitting in heavenly places in Christ. Your position in Christ is high above all principality and power. You must see who you are in Christ. You can do all things through Christ.
It is important to know your authority and engage the enemy in faith. There is no need to fear. Demons are subject to the authority of the believer. Jesus gives us power to tread on serpents and scorpions (Luke 10:19). He promised that nothing will by any means harm us. Joshua was told to engage the enemy (Deut. 2:24). You will see great victories through engagement. To engage means to bring troops into conflict.
There are some believers who fear engagement. They are afraid of backlash. Jesus sent His disciples out to engage the enemy. They were told to heal the sick and cast out devils. Two important revelations every believer needs are an understanding of power and an understanding of authority. Power is the Greek word dunamis. Authority is the Greek word exousia. Authority is the legal right to use power. We have been given authority to use the power supplied by the Holy Spirit. Authority and power must be used. You use them by faith.
This is not based on feeling but on faith. It is based on the Word of God. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. It is important for believers to attend churches that teach on power and authority. It is important to read and study on these subjects. Revelation in these areas will give confidence to pray these prayers. We have been given the legal right to use the name of Jesus. The name of Jesus is above every name.
Authority in the name of Jesus is recognized by the spirit realm. We cast out demons in that name. We bind the works of darkness in that name. We teach and preach in that name. We receive power through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). God is able to do exceedingly abundantly according to the power that operates in us.
Jesus cast out demons through the power of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:28). We combine the power of the Holy Spirit with the authority of the name of Jesus to rout the enemy. We do not engage the enemy in our own power and authority. We engage the enemy through the power of the Holy Spirit and in the authority of the name of Jesus. Demons recognize power and authority. They recognize believers who operate in power and authority.
The more you exercise power and authority, the more you will develop in these areas. It is important to start. These prayers will help you get started. It is also important to make sure your sins are forgiven when engaging the enemy. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Do not engage the enemy with unconfessed sin in your life.
There is power in the blood of Jesus. His blood cleanses us from all sin. Give no place to the devil. You must operate in righteousness. We are made righteous through faith. We are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor. 5:21). Many believers suffer from feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem because they do not understand righteousness. Righteousness gives us confidence. Righteousness gives us boldness. Righteousness is the scepter of the kingdom (Heb. 1:8).
The righteous are as bold as a lion (Prov. 28:1). God covers our heads in the day of battle (Ps. 140:7). A covering is protection. Covering is based on subjection to God, His Word, and the Holy Spirit. Humility and submission are important characteristics of believers who engage in spiritual warfare. These prayers are not for people who are rebellious. It is important to be submitted to proper biblical authority. This includes being submitted to godly leaders who watch for your soul.

3) CONFRONTING the ENEMY’S TACTICS

We are not to be ignorant of the devil’s tactics. We can overcome all the schemes of the devil. The devil is a schemer. A scheme is a plan, design, or program of action. The Bible talks about the wiles of the devil (Eph. 6:11). A wile is a trick or a trap. A trap is a snare. Warfare involves tactics and strategies. The greatest generals are great tacticians and strategists. You cannot win without a strategy. Don’t allow the enemy to strategize against you. Overcome and destroy his strategies through prayer. Traps and snares are hidden. People fall into traps unknowingly. We are delivered from the snare of the fowler. A fowler is a hunter. Satan is the hunter of souls. We can release ourselves and others through prayer. The main tactic of the enemy is deception. He is a liar and the father of lies. The Word of God exposes the tactics of the enemy. God is light, and His Word is light. The light exposes the enemy and tears away the darkness. Multitudes of people are deceived by the enemy. There are hosts of lying and deceiving spirits that work under the authority of Satan. These spirits include delusion, deception, lying, seducing, blinding, error, and guile. Our praying can strip the power of these deceiving spirits and cause the eyes of people to be opened.

David prayed against the enemy conspiracies of the wicked. The Psalms are filled with references to the plans of his enemies to overthrow him. His prayers were the key in destroying these plans and bringing him deliverance. David prayed for his enemies to be scattered, confused, exposed, and destroyed. David’s struggles were with natural enemies. Behind these natural enemies were spiritual ones that were opposed to the Davidic kingdom. Jesus was to come from this line and sit upon this throne. David was fighting something beyond the natural. Through the Holy Spirit he was contending with the powers of darkness that were set against the arrival of the kingdom of God. These powers were also manifested through Herod, who attempted to kill the coming Messiah. Herod was driven by spirits of fear and murder. He was used by Satan to attempt to abort the coming kingdom. However, the Holy Spirit had already been loosed through the prayers of David, and David’s throne was secure. Many of these warfare prayers are taken from the psalms of David. Jesus is the Son of David. He sits on the throne of David. David’s prophetic prayers were weapons against the enemy’s attempt to stop the promised seed. David’s victories in prayer opened the way for his throne to continue. The throne of wickedness was unable to overcome the throne of righteousness. God taught David. He became the warrior king. His victories caused his kingdom to be established. His victory over the house of Saul came after a long war (2 Sam. 3:1). Don’t become discouraged in prayer. Continue to pray. You will become stronger, and the enemy will become weaker. David consumed his enemies (Ps. 18:37–40). He did not turn until they were destroyed. We must see our spiritual enemies completely destroyed. We must pursue the enemy. To pursue means to follow in order to overtake or capture. It means to chase with hostile intent. We cannot be passive when it comes to warfare. David’s victories prepared the way for Solomon. Solomon enjoyed peace and prosperity. Solomon’s name means “peace.” Peace is the Hebrew word shalom. Shalom means “peace, prosperity, favor, health, and well-being.” Your victories over the enemy will release shalom. You will experience greater levels of peace and prosperity.

4) DESTROYING the ENEMY’S FORCES

Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). The works of the devil are carried out by his forces. Satan’s kingdom consists of principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. There are different kinds of demons and different levels of wickedness. We can destroy the wicked early (Ps. 101:8). We can destroy them that hate us (Ps. 18:40). Satan is rendered helpless when his forces are destroyed. We have authority to bind the strongman and strip him of his armor. Israel was sent into Canaan to destroy different nations, which are pictures of kingdoms that possessed the land. Each kingdom represented a different type of stronghold God wanted His people to destroy. Demons are also represented by different creatures. The diversity in the animal kingdom is a picture of the diversity in the kingdom of darkness. The Bible talks about serpents, scorpions, lions, jackals, bulls, foxes, owls, sea serpents, flies, and dogs. These represent different kinds of evil spirits that operate to destroy mankind. They are invisible to the natural eye. They are just as real, however, as natural creatures. We must always remember that there are more with us than against us. The forces of light are far superior to the forces of darkness. Jesus is the Lord of the armies. The armies of heaven are fighting with the armies of earth. Releasing the angelic armies of heaven is an important strategy in warfare. We can destroy and rout the forces of darkness in the heavens, the earth, the sea, and under the earth. These forces can operate through people, governments, economic systems, educational systems, and different structures set up by men. These forces can operate from different locations and in different territories. The idols that men worship are made in the image of men, four-footed beasts, birds, and creeping things. Behind these idols are demons. These are evil spirits that manifest in the natural through idols. These gods (idols) were also male and female. The nations worshiped gods and goddesses. Jezebel is an example of a female principality. The Bible uses strong words that pertain to warfare including:

Abolish—to end, cut, strike through (Isa. 2:18; 2 Tim. 1:10)

Beat down—beat, bruise, violently strike, crush, destroy, discomfort, break down by violence, dismay, terrify (Judg. 9:45; 2 Kings 13:25; Ps. 18:42; Isa. 27:12; Jer. 46:5)

Break down—deliver, break, rend in pieces, crush, destroy, to spoil (by breaking in pieces), pluck down, pull down, ruin, beat down, cast down, dash in pieces, disperse (Exod. 34:13; Lev. 26:19; Ps. 2:9; 10:15; 58:6; 72:4; Eccles. 3:3; Isa. 45:2; Jer. 28:4; Dan. 2:40)

Cast down—to tear down, break down, destroy, overthrow, pull down, throw down, cast down to hell (Judg. 6:28, 30; Ps. 17:13; 89:44; 102:10; 147:6; Isa. 28:2; Jer. 8:12; Dan. 7:9; 8:10; 2 Cor. 4:9; 10:5; 2 Pet.

Cast out—to occupy by driving out the previous tenants and possessing their place, to seize, to rob, to inherit, to expel, to impoverish, to send away, to push away or down, cast away, to banish, to eject, send out, throw out (Exod. 34:24; Lev. 18:24; Deut. 6:19; 1 Kings 14:24; 2 Kings 16:3; Job 20:15; Ps. 5:10; Matt. 12:28; Mark 6:13; Luke 9:40; John 12:31; Rev. 12:9)

Chase (pursue)—run after with hostile intent, put to flight, persecute (Lev. 26:7–8; Deut. 32:30; Ps. 18:37; 35:3; Isa. 17:13)

Confound (confuse)—to be ashamed, disappointed, brought to confusion, put to shame (Ps. 35:4, 26; 40:14; 70:2, 13, 24; 83:17; 97:7; 109:29; 129:5; Jer. 17:18; 50:2)

Consume—to end, consume away, destroy, make clean riddance, to eat up, devour, burn up (Deut. 7:16, 22; Ps. 37:20; 71:13; 104:35; 2 Thess. 2:8; Heb. 12:29)

Contend—to grate, to anger, meddle, strive, stir up, grapple with, to defend, chide, rebuke, initiate a controversy (Deut. 2:24; Isa. 41:12; 49:25; Jer. 12:5; Jude 9)

Destroy—to end, to cease, destroy utterly, make clean, waste, make accursed, tear down, beat down, break down, to devour, eat up (Lev. 26:30, 44; 20:17; 31:3; Ps. 5:6, 10; 18:40; 21:10; 28:5; 52:5; 55:9; 74:8; 101:8; 144:6; Prov. 15:25; Isa. 23:11; Jer. 1:10; Matt. 21:41; Mark 1:24; 9:22; John 10:10; 1 John 3:8)

Fight—to consume, to battle, make war, overcome, prevail, struggle, contend with the adversary (Exod. 14:14; 17:9; Deut. 1:30; Josh. 10:25; Judg. 1:1, 3, 9; Ps. 35:1; 144:1; Dan. 10:20; 1 Tim. 6:12; 2 Tim. 4:7; Heb. 10:32)

Prevail—to enclose, to hold back, shut up, stop, be strong, put on strength, to overpower, restrain, bind, conquer (2 Chron. 14:11; Ps. 9:19; Isa. 42:13; Matt. 16:18)

Smite—strike, beat, cast forth, slaughter, give stripes, wound, slay, push, defeat, inflict, dash, gore, hurt, put to the worse (Num. 25:17; Deut. 13:15; Josh. 7:3; Judg. 20:31; 1 Sam. 15:3; Isa. 19:22; Jer. 43:11; Acts 7:24; Rev. 11:6)

Wrestle—to struggle, grapple (Gen. 30:8; 32:24; Eph. 6:12)

The Bible contains many words that speak of warfare. The Bible is filled with warfare. The history of man has been determined by wars. John saw war in heaven between Michael and his angels and Satan and his angels (Rev. 12:7). War requires warriors. Warriors must have the tenacity to overcome their enemies. Remember, God trains our hands to war and our fingers to fight (Ps. 144:1).

5) EXPERIENCING DELIVERANCE and RELEASE

Israel experienced many deliverances in its history. The nation of Israel began with a mighty deliverance. David the king received many deliverances. He called upon the Lord for deliverance and was heard (Ps. 34:4). God answers the cries and prayers of His people. God’s deliverance is always a sign of His love and mercy.

The word salvation means deliverance. The Bible is filled with stories of deliverance and salvation. One of the greatest revelations is the revelation of self-deliverance. We can loose ourselves from any control in darkness (Isa. 52:2). We can exercise power and authority for our own lives. Jesus told us to cast out the beam from our own eye (Luke 6:42).

This is a key to an overcoming life. Those who experienced deliverance either came or were brought to Jesus. Someone had to take the initiative. It all begins with a decision. You cannot allow passivity to rob you of deliverance. You must open your mouth. Your deliverance is as close as your mouth. There are many people frustrated with life.

People who struggle can become overwhelmed by doubt and failure. Some are battling stress and pressure that often lead to emotional and physical problems. Jesus spent a considerable amount of time ministering to the oppressed. Multitudes came to hear Him in order to be healed and delivered from evil spirits.

Long-term bondages will be destroyed. Hidden roots will be exposed and eliminated. Inexplicable problems will be solved. Stubborn obstacles will be removed. Cycles of failure will be broken. Frustration and despair will be eliminated through warfare prayer. Discouragement and disappointment will be overcome. The puzzling problems of life will be taken away. Lasting peace can finally be experienced. The abundant life can be enjoyed. Failures that cause bitterness are reversed through warfare prayer. Prosperity and success will come. Advancement will be seen in different areas of your life. You will experience success in relationships, finances, ministry, and projects.

Deliverance is designed to eliminate the spiritual obstacles that impede progress. Deliverance makes the rough places smooth and the crooked places straight. You can see the enemy routed from your life. You can live free from the bondages and oppressions of demons. You can experience victory through prayer. Your words and prayers have tremendous power to destroy the works of darkness.

Those who experience deliverance and release will see notable changes. Sometimes the change is progressive and sometimes instantaneous. The change, however, will be dramatic. There will be an increase of joy, liberty, peace, and success. This will result in a better spiritual life with an increase of strength and holiness. Patience is necessary to see breakthrough. God promised Israel that He would drive the enemy out little by little (Deut. 7:22; Exod. 23:29–30).

Unless you understand this principle, you will become weary in praying for some people, and you will become discouraged in your own deliverance. The more freedom you will receive, the more you need to grow and possess your land. You have the authority to bind and loose (Matt. 18:18). Webster’s dictionary defines the word bind as, “to make secure by tying; to confine, restrain, or restrict as if with bonds: to constrain with legal authority: to exert a restraining or compelling effect.”

It also means to arrest, apprehend, handcuff, lead captive, take charge of, lock up, restrain, check, or put a stop to. Binding is done by legal authority. We have legal authority in the name of Jesus to bind the works of darkness. The works of darkness encompass sin, iniquity, perversion, sickness, disease, infirmity, death, destruction, curses, witchcraft, sorcery, divination, poverty, lack, strife, lust, pride, rebellion, fear, torment, and confusion.

We have legal authority to put a stop to these things in our lives and in the lives of those we minister to. Loose means to untie, to free from restraint, to detach, to disjoin, divorce, separate, unhitch, get free, get loose, escape, break away, unbind, unchain, unfetter, free, release, unlock, liberate, disconnect, or forgive.

People need to be loosed from curses, evil inheritance, familiar spirits, sin, guilt, shame, condemnation, control, domination, manipulation, intimidation, mind control, religious control, sickness, disease, deception, false teaching, sin, habits, worldliness, carnality, demons, tradition, ungodly soul ties, ungodly pledges, ungodly vows, spoken words, hexes, vexes, jinxes, trauma, and cults. We have legal authority in the name of Jesus to loose ourselves and others to whom we minister from these destroying influences.

Jesus seemed to have implied that yes, all those who believe in Him are able to cast out demons, while the incident with the two Jewish brothers from Acts seems to indicate that it takes more than having faith to cast out demons. What are your thoughts on the matter?
@Lucian, why do you think that "Jesus seemed to have implied that yes, all those who believe in Him are able to cast out demons"? Paul makes it clear in 1 Corinthians 12-14 that different Christians have different gifts.
