Note this same pattern in the last book of the Old Testament, (Malachi). Malachai gives particular emphasis upon the evils of the priests in Israel.
Warnings: (Mal. 1:6) "....O priests, that despise my name....." (Mal. 1:7) "Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar...." (Mal. 1:8) "And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil; and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil?...." (Mal. 1:10) "I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand." (Mal. 2:8) "But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi...." (Mal. 2:11) "Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is comitted in Israel and in Jerusalem...."
Judgement: (Mal. 2:2) "....I will even send a curse upon you and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already....." (Mal. 2:3) "Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces....." (Mal. 2:9) Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people...."
Restoration: (Mal. 3:1) "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple...he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts." (Mal. 3:2) "...for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers soap:" (Mal. 3:3) "...and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness." (Mal. 3:4) "Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in the former years." (Mal. 3:5) "And I will come near to you to judgment...." (Mal. 3:6) "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." (Mal. 3:7) "....Return unto me, and I will return unto you, said the LORD of hosts....." (Mal. 3:18) "Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked...."
Future blessings: (Mal. 3:10) "...prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of haven, and pour you out a blessing...." (Mal. 3:11) "And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes...." (Mal. 3:12) "And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts." (Mal. 4:1-2) "For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven....But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings...." (Mal. 4:3) "And ye shall tread down the wicked...." (Mal. 4:4) "Remember ye the law of Moses....." (Mal. 4:5) "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:" (Mal. 4:6) "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers....."
This will be the last words of the LORD to Israel for 400 years. God gave them promises that He will not abandon them. But judgement must first come. And it would be the judgement that would bring Israel back. But both are sure. The judgement and the return.
