Acts chapter eleven says that believers were first called Christians in Antioch in Syria some time around 45 AD. The question was raised in another thread (What do Lutherans believe?) when Catholics started using "Christians" as their self-description. My answer is around the time that the name was first applied to them around 45 AD. But for a more recent but still old example I cite the following link to James Cardinal Gibbons' book The Faith of Our Fathers from 1879 AD.

Read the introduction starting on page 7 of The Faith of Our Fathers. It is informative despite being over one hundred years old. The link is here.

There werent any RomanCatholics in 45 A.D.
This is why so much of the language is vague, and often deliberately so, it seems.

They wont say WATER-baptism, even though they KNOW thats what is meant, bc it gives them an 'out' by being able to say 'See? It just says baptism, haha'.

Or it says 'Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood...' so they have to insist the wafer is magically transformed, into literal flesh and blood.

And now how many times is the word 'catholic' used, when they know full well theyre only referring to their own RomanCatholic denomination?

But they can fall on the word game of 'Oh, catholic just means universal, like we're all catholics, right?
Nah, not buyin it.

The thread was supposedly in answer to another question about ROMAN Catholics, which others and I also raised, bc when I was a kid, none of the 'catholic kids' ... the ROMANCATHOLIC kids , really called themselves christians, and its been rather recent that ROMANCatholics have been regularly calling themselves 'christian' rather than 'catholics'.

Its dishonest to point to the year 45A.D. and 'catholics' in this context, bc it's obvious we're referring to ROMANCatholics, of which there werent any for a long time after the year 45.

For us to have honest dialogue and unite in the faith, if that is your desire for everyone here, since we're all necessarly assumed to be christians here, then we're going to have to insist on honesty of language.

If you mean Water-baptism, SAY water, so ppl will know youre not just meaning baptism in the spirit or some other way.
If you mean ROMANCatholic church, SAY THAT, not just the generic 'catholic church' so ppl know precisely what you mean. The year 45 and the Acts of the first believers in the bible, the church, the body of Christ, is not about the ROMANCatholic church, as the OP is.

Yup.

Of course that has nothing to do with The Roman Catholic denomination or any Christians who are officially registered in congregations owned and operated by the Roman Catholic denomination/corporations.

And why not? That is the reason I say I'm a christian too, although my denomination started in 1906 or so.

Yes, I think it was said way back in post#3 ??
Here, I'll re-quote the similar portion, so we're up to date....

Right? Right.

Dont be silly. Of course, we're all christians (officially, biblically) when Jesus saves us. What denominations any of us are in dont matter, and there werent any in 45 A.D. anyway.

What Josiah (and some guy named Snerfle way back in post#3) were saying, is 'the references made to the ROMANCATHOLIC denomination as being a christian denomination during the book of Acts or in 45AD are bogus, bc there WAS no RC denom for a few hundred years yet.'

The one TRUE Church, the body of Christ, is made up of the saved, His own, believers, and that has no respect to any denomination or group-label that is used today.
God has His children from every tribe, nation, tongue, and in various church buildings, houses, streets, etc, around the world.

It was the erroneous claim of the OP that it was the Catholic Church, meaning ROMANCatholic denomination, that was supposedly in Acts or in 45 A.D. that we were pointing out and correcting.

(Altough you might make a fun arguement that the Pentecostalz were first, lol) :cheer:

Everyone knows that the first Christians in Antioch were a part of the 1st Baptist Church of Antioch. It's a no brainer.
