What are some good gifts to give to someone who is getting baptized?

I didn't grow up in a church where gifts were given at ones baptism. But I think it's a fine idea.

When graduating from High School the Church gave us small New Testaments. And though they were of the popular translation back then, I appreciated it. And I actually found great use of it for a brief time when going through a great trial.

And, for no reason I can remember, one Sunday a certain elder of the Church was in the parking lot passing out Strongs Concordances to any who wanted one. He gave one to me and I took it. I didn't think much of it, but I have used that concordance for many years, and still have it today.

So, I guess, for me, a good baptismal gift is something that the believer may need down the road to help shore up their faith. A good Bible or concordance. Or maybe a good commentary. I'm sure there are many other good gifts, but that is just me.

Some sort of token would be appropriate, IMO. Not the kind of gift that you'd give on the occasion of a wedding, for example. Maybe some nice little item you'd find at a Christian book store.

It would depend whether it's a child or an adult. When my friend's daughter was baptised (as an adult) she already had all the "regular religious stuff" she needed and her tastes were a bit off-beat so I gave her a CD of a Christian hard rock band. She loved it.

I'm not familiar with giving gifts to the baby at baptism..... It's not something I've seen.

But if that's desired, I suppose a nice child's Cross for the nursery or even a picture of Jesus with little children might be nice.

I would say a cross on a chain.

Some years ago I knew a couple who ran a Christian bookshop. They often had people wanting christening gifts, seeking out a nice white leather-bound Bible with lovely gold-edged pages. Just the kind of thing baby needs. They'd often guide the people towards more child-friendly Bibles or storybooks - the kind of thing the child can use within a few years rather than the kind of thing they probably won't use for at least a decade or more, assuming it hasn't been lost by then.

Also, a good devotional book would be good. Something that gives a devotion for every day of the year. The book 'My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers comes to mind.

Or "My Daily Pursuit" by A.W. Tozer.

Or, "Hinds Feet On High Places" by Hannah Hurnard.

I think it depends on the age, but a nice Bible is pretty much always appropriate, even for babies. Babies can receive those white Precious Moments NKJV Bibles, adults you have a lot more choices. It may also depend on the denomination, Lutherans may like a nice leather bound Small Catechism. Tokens like wooden crosses or pictures of Jesus with the date and such are also nice.
