That's all I'm going to post as I don't want an argument.

I wonder if Mr.Hattan is on the revolving door scheme between Big Food and Big Pharma and the FDA like so many other people are.

His article is faulty on many points, including the "argument from authority" and un-named "studies" (who funded them? who did them? names and organizations please).

Amused by this argument especially:

Second, the claim that aspartame ingestion results in the production of methanol, formaldehyde and formate: These claims are factual. In the gastrointestinal tract aspartame is hydrolyzed to one of its component materials, methanol, as well as the two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. This methanol is taken up by the cells of the body and metabolized first to formaldehyde and then to formate. The key information that is missing in the description by Ms. Markle is that the levels of ingestion are very modest. In fact, there are other foodstuffs that we ingest that supply as much and sometimes even more methanol; e.g., citrus fruits and juices, and tomatoes or tomato juice. There are even higher quantities of methanol ingested when ethanol is consumed. Thus, in the final analysis this methanol is the same as from other sources and in the quantities consumed from aspartame, it is readily and naturally metabolized via the one-carbon biochemical cycle to entirely innocuous and natural body components.

Now I drink a lot of tomato juice, and I frequently drink lime juice, and sometimes lemon juice. I have yet to get a methanol related symptom from drinking these yet. NO, Mr Hattan, these products DO NOT contain methanol - unless they are fermented, which only happens under certain conditions. Even if a bit of fermentation does happen, natural fruits and fruit juices contain an array of protective factors that offset this. The product you are defending doesn't.

Snopes, sigh. That website still has up this horrendous page, which supports that absolutely ridiculous story that a Boeing Air bus flew a few inches off the ground, wasn't caught on any nearby cameras, didn't cause any wake turbulence on the freeway it's supposed to have flew directly above, who the government said videos didn't exist - then showed one that doesn't show a plane, which didn't leave any visible plane debris (but produced for our viewing later)...:

Well, I make no claim to having had cured any of those things and my lesion under my tongue was not listed on that page ;) But it's almost gone after discontinuing use of aspartame. So I'll keep avoiding it for the rest of my life since I can't see what it did inside my body! I'm hoping any other damage is clearing up as well.

Coincidence? The FDA knows that it can cause severe mouth problems:

http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/03/jan03/012203/02p-0317_emc-000199.txt

In an epidemiological survey which appeared in the Journal of
Applied Nutrition (Roberts 1988), 551 persons who have
reported toxicity effects from aspartame ingestion were
surveyed. The adverse effects found cover a subset of reported
acute and chronic toxicity effects from aspartame.

I see I started quite the kerfuffle. I don't deny that some may have an aspartame sensitivity, some severely so. Lamm, I'm grateful that things turned around for you when you cut it out. And I don't deny the other science you referenced. I just don't go full bore into generalizing the effects to everyone.

I guess I am a little confused by things like this, but we don't blink an eye when we buy meat (like chicken) with a label that says "white meat chicken breast with up to 15% of a solution". That worries me a bit more. Yet we consume it.

I thought that the 15% solution in chicken was a salty water to keep the meat looking plump because that's more visually appealing to buyers. It's awful for those who need to reduce their salt intake due to health problems.
