So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

I'm feeling sluggish today. I'm not sure why. If I'd had a heavy night on the beers it would make sense but last night's indulgence was limited to some ice cream and a coffee. Oh well, it happens. Maybe I'll get a gentle run in and play with my new bowl gouge some more.

Jesus will save you if you.... ???

If our lives don't reflect Jesus, can we truly say we believe?

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

That's an interesting thought, I hadn't considered that. If I can keep them so they dry out without going moldy I kinda like that idea. Today I tested out my new bowl gouges. I started out with an expendable piece of wood as I had no idea how the process would go, but turned my first bowl...

Jesus will save you if you.... ???

This seems like something that could go round and round in circles forever. If we truly believe our lives will reflect it. Hence we have faith and works. James said that faith without works is dead - if someone has no works we might question whether they truly believe. The question about what...

Jesus will save you if you.... ???

James makes mention of belief not being enough. The demons believe in God.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

My new lathe tools arrived today. I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow so I had enough other stuff that I didn't get to play with them yet. Tomorrow I should get to test them out.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

If it dries without mold, possibly. I just don't light anywhere near enough bonfires to need gallons of shavings. I've currently got about 40 gallons of shavings in two trash bags and another 5 gallons on the floor waiting to be swept up.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

I made another bowl this evening. I don't imagine anyone is surprised. A logistical issue I hadn't expected is how to get rid of all the shavings.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Turning out a few more bowls. I'm thinking I might try and get a space at a local craft show and see if I can sell some of them. It's a local show and cheap enough to be there, but shows are always something of a balancing act. The ones that are local and cheap tend to be the ones with...

Do you give to GoFundMe accounts?

This is my thinking too. If I know someone or a situation I can make an informed decision whether and how to help - sometimes the best help isn't necessarily cash. If I don't know a situation there's no way to know whether someone really found themselves chained to a dead elephant for 17 years...

Have you ever thought of creating your own forum?

Maybe, at the time the policy made no distinction. Realistically speaking it's hard to determine where the line between the two should be drawn - it's easy to find examples that few would argue but the endless gray areas in between are the problem. And when the penalty for failing to comply with...

Have you ever thought of creating your own forum?

Many years ago I not only thought about it but started writing some code to implement it. My thinking was more to create some kind of photographic gallery where people could have a standalone discussion but could also discuss an individual picture, a collection of pictures etc. If anyone knows...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Lots of storms last night, lots of rain. I was out for the evening and got to see lightning in the distance for most of the drive home. Today we've got rain but it's supposed to clear up this afternoon. So I'll do some work indoors, and then maybe get a run in this afternoon.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

At some point I want to set up a little white canopy with a clean white light in it, so I can take pictures and post them to the local Faceache marketplace group. Online sites seem like they can work but by the time you read 17 pages of terms and conditions and find the site takes a chunk of the...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Another bowl sitting in a bucket of shavings so it can dry out. This one was pretty wet, and gummed up my coarse sandpaper very fast when I tried to sand it. So it can dry for a bit, and then I'll finish it. It would be nice if I could take it to my woodturning club tomorrow evening but I...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Definitely. I've got three bowls that more or less match and in my area I'd reckon on getting maybe $50-60 for the set. In a bigger city I'd consider asking more like $40-50 per bowl. If you've got people around who don't care about the price and just want something that's unique you can do well...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

It will be interesting to see what kind of prices they will command. It's sometimes hard to know what will command a good price because it's hand made, and what will struggle to sell because people can buy some junky Chinese plastic equivalent from Walmart for $2.99 - in my area a lot of people...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

It depends on the size of the bowl and your skill level. The little bowls, the kind of thing that would hold a handful of nuts or similar, probably take me about half an hour or so. The giant one I made took me more like 6-8 hours. Part of that time is turning an irregularly shaped log into...
