    Your local library

Small and with a limited selection. But they can get books in from other libraries so it's useable. The librarian who works there is very friendly and helpful, so we use it quite a bit. If I'm only likely to read a book once it makes more sense to read someone else's copy than buy my own, read...

    Regifting

I've regifted a few things over the years. If I get a gift I won't use but I know someone else who I think probably will I'll certainly regift. I'd just check to make sure it isn't personalised in some way. I've received a few things that I suspect were regifted. I remember one book that had a...

    Vaccine choice law

In the land of the free, you don't get to decide because Nanny State knows best. You couldn't make this stuff up.

    Laptop or PC

I don't know that either is objectively better. I use a laptop because it's more powerful than my desktop. When it's time to upgrade I'm not sure whether I'll go for another laptop or a more powerful desktop. It's handy being able to pack a honking great hard drive into a desktop - it cost me...

    My pet termite

Last night he went to the pub, jumped up on the serving counter and asked "is the bar tender here?"

    My pet termite

I got a new pet, it's a termite named Clint. Clint Eatswood.

    Bad decisions

Many years ago I knew a guy who relentlessly fell back on "I can't afford it" whenever I tried to suggest ways he might improve his life, learn new skills etc. Which was all well and good, except that "I can't afford it" never applied when it came to buying beer or eating out. If my wife and I...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

I guess you didn't actually read what I wrote. Oh well. It seems to be the way this thread is going.

A gift card instead of cash

It's pretty easy to hack the cards, if you're so inclined. If you take a few gift cards from the store the chances are they won't stop you because they aren't worth anything. Then scratch the strip off the back and note the code underneath. Put a replacement scratch strip on, and put the card...

A gift card instead of cash

It certainly implies a little more thought than giving cash although cash is better in so many ways. It works anywhere, isn't subject to terms and conditions, doesn't stop working if the store goes out of business, and can't be hacked the way gift cards often can. As a teenager it was tedious...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Yes, but as people have said "the whole world" doesn't actually mean "the whole world". That would be too obvious. It really means some unspecified subset of the whole world. As to whether you and I are part of that mysterious inner circle, who knows? Don't you just love a good guessing game?

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Maybe I am wiser than the god some people would like to present, even if I'm nowhere near as wise as the real God.

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Maybe a god that tells us to go into the world and preach a message to people who can't possibly benefit from it just has a sick sense of humor? You know, the whole "so loved the world" that he sent his son to die for, well, just a selected few, and then told the rest to go and spread the word...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

It must be one of those "dog whistles" we keep hearing about. You know, where a phrase means one thing but also apparently means something totally different to a select yet mostly undefined group but nobody can prove what or why (or indeed how the secret group knows what it really means) so...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Perhaps God just likes to watch us wasting our time. Perhaps he sends people to go out as missionaries into some primitive area, facing all sorts of risks, to spread a message that won't benefit a single person in the area because none of them are among the elect.

Jesus died for the sins of the world

It's a hugely inefficient way to do things, sending people into the world to preach to "every creature" when the overwhelming majority of those creatures aren't even capable of responding to the message being preached. It would seem less productive than sending people into Los Angeles to tell...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Yep, good old half-wit God. Not only did he get that all wrong but when Jesus said to go into the world and preach to every creature he was just having us on. He might as well have said "Go into the world, have a good laugh at the people who listen to your message even though it's a complete...

    Favorite seafood dish

I don't care for oysters and I'm not a particular fan of flatfish in general. Aside from that I like clams, mussels, scallops, crab, lobster, most fish (at least the ones I've had) etc. I must admit I think lobster is overrated - I like it but don't think it's worth the money.

    A house phone

I kinda have a house phone. It looks like a landline number but I ported it to a cellphone. In time I plan to port it to some form of VOIP. It's handy being able to answer the house phone even when I'm not home. I'd hate to find my car's extended warranty had expired and I missed the call that...

Jesus died for the sins of the world

Wow. I can just imagine the way some people must think Jesus should have addressed the masses. "Come unto me, you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will help a miniscule few of you while mocking the rest."
