Helping those who don't want help?

If someone doesn't want to be helped then at some point we have to accept their wish and not help them. There are always people out there who are just as deserving of help and who actually want it.

    Lämmchen's Workout Thread

I ran a 10k today. I say "ran", it was so hot I ended up walking a depressing amount of it because I couldn't keep my heart rate down, but I got there in the end. I had hoped to do some stuff this afternoon but it took a while to cool off, and the work area is hot and humid so I decided not to...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Yesterday I got the boxing work done and the electrical tidying up, which was nice. I've got a couple of small things left to do in this space, then I can start moving the heavy stuff out to make room for the next stages.

Can speaking in tongues be faked or learned?

It's easy to fake tongues, especially when among the uber-charismatic types who talk a lot about discernment but wouldn't know it if it jumped up and bit them. All you need to do is whisper "shundai, shundai, kushanda" or some such and nobody will know the difference. Of course God will know...

    USA Are Taxes Un-Fair?

I don't recall anyone complaining that the Clinton administration represented a government that was too small. Perhaps we could go back to a government that size, and cut taxes accordingly. Or slowly cut taxes, allowing the reduction in the size of government to turn a monstrous deficit into a...

    Is this true?:

I'm not sure how any of us could possibly know, unless someone happened to go to that high school.

    USA Are Taxes Un-Fair?

This is the key thing here - so many people talk of how "the rich should pay their fair share" and yet definitions of "rich" and "fair share" usually turn out to mean little more than anyone with more than I have is "rich" and their "fair share" is something substantially more than they...

    Prayer Request Thread June-July 2025

Sounds like a big move, and if you've both agreed on where you're headed that's a good sign.

    AI and Medicine

It's pretty common that medicines have side effects. What's worrying is when side effects are listed and many of them are significantly worse than the condition the medicine is supposed to treat.

    Lämmchen's Workout Thread

Really not liking the hot weather, it's so very draining trying to maintain a decent pace in it. I've been doing a lot of gentle runs, and my watch is constantly telling me I need to train harder. Today I did speed repeats. Not full-on sprints, my watch suggested a pace I'm not sure if I can...

    Prayer Request Thread June-July 2025

After a slight delay it looks like we should get a definitive answer one way or the other shortly after Labor Day. So far it looks like everything will go the way we're expecting but, as the saying goes, time will tell.

    Big concerts or little venues?

I saw Kings X play live in a tiny little venue I didn't even know existed until a friend invited me to join him for the gig. The cost per ticket was the equivalent of maybe $15-20 per person, cheap enough that my wife came along even though she wasn't sure what she'd make of it. It was a...

Jesus will save you if you.... ???

Coming in a little late here, it looks like a lot of good stuff is said. What I need to do is repent and believe. If the church expects me to earn salvation by giving something or praying a very specific form of words, chances are I'll be looking for another church. I don't care much for the...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Trying to remove a section of base board from behind some stairs. It's one of the few occasions I've been thankful a length of board is made up of pieces because this has been a headache. Lots of nails from all directions, many of them almost totally inaccessible, such that I've had to cut into...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

My wife and I survived the day of babysitting. We had two sisters, aged 5 and 6, to look after for the day. We're very fond of them so we don't mind keeping them so their mom can go to work. I concluded getting a sawzall blade behind my baseboard is an exercise in futility because a 9" blade...

    Termite

I got myself a pet termite. I'm calling him Clint. Clint Eatswood.

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

I got my air conditioning filters cleaned. I tried using a vacuum cleaner on them but it didn't work as well as I hoped so I took them outside and gave them a good spray with an air compressor. It blew some dust out of them and when the dust stopped blowing they were visibly cleaner again...

    Prayer Request Thread June-July 2025

I mentioned a situation in the thread a couple of months back. It's still premature to post details on a public board but things have been progressing well so far. I'm hoping everything will wrap up in the way everybody is hoping, probably next month, but never say no to extra prayers that we...

    Invite your pastor to dinner?

Not at my current church, although the pastor has invited us for dinner. (We've only been going a few months so far). At my previous church we had the pastor and his wife for dinner. At the church before that, before we moved, we had dinner with the pastor and his wife fairly regularly.
