The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

I'm not talking about New Testament writings so to compare the Septuagint pre Gospel sources (which were read by Jesus and the Apostles) to Luke or Romans is not fair. 2 of these books are wisdom books like unto proverbs, the rest are historical books like Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, Kings...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

The council of Jamnia never finalised canon, it's a 1871 theory that apparently has been refuted by scholars since. If there were a meeting it is STILL after Jesus walked the Earth and Paul was very aware of what the Jews were up to! I'll go with the hebrew sources that Jesus and the Apostles...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

I pointed out in an earlier post how early church fathers had held them as equal, again Clement of Rome for example write a letter to the same church that Apostle Paul wrote to where he mentions Judith in Ruth without distinction. A good rule of thumb would be if 2 or 3 sources are in agreement...

Recovery of sight to the blind

Now for my next question concerning the house of Jacob. Is it 75 or 70? "Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls." Acts 7:14 Acts clearly says "75" but... "And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all...

Recovery of sight to the blind

Thanks Lamm! This is exactly what I gathered when reading "those in prison that our bound", I realised that it IS another way of saying "recovery of sight to the blind" I just find it interesting that Jesus must have been reading the Hebrew scripture that the Greek translations was based. From...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

The NT stood firm as canon throughout Christian history, we all agree! That's something to rejoice and celebrate! My determination to talk about these OT books however is due to the fact that I have no denomination, and I have no prejudice towards any, but I feel that by churches having a...

Recovery of sight to the blind

In Luke 4:18 Jesus quotes Isaiah 61 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised"...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

Note: I'm creating an off shoot thread based on post 75 since no body cares to discuss the biblical quotation anomalies I pointed out, it's better to take baby steps when discussing textual criticism, so by all means continue contributing to the OPs topic.

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

You are asking for status but isn't the OT a reference book for us gentiles? I mean the NT is really all we need, Revelation says that there will be those during the tribulation that will be saved by holding the testimony of Jesus.. So we shouldn't be picking favorites but instead we should...

    The Soul Survives Death

Scripture seems to suggest otherwise, "sleep" refers to bodily inactivity but when we sleep we are still consciously active. The bible says that the dead (or those in "sleep") are unaware of the world and what's going on in it. It should be comforting to know that although we die the death but...

The christian response to global warming

You don't have to be an expert to know that humans generally thrive off fear because it's exciting for them, horror movies and amusement park rides seems to be a clear indication that the idea of fearful situations is a door to "bravery"... at least that's how I interpret it :)

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

Josiah none of those churches or controversy surrounding them has anything to do with the the contents of the Greek Septuagint, this WAS the known canon of the OT recorded from an official Hebrew text otherwise it would have never been authored and agreed with by the Jews. There was no...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

From Wikipedia Jewish useEdit See also:*Development of the Hebrew Bible canon The pre-Christian Jews*Philo*and*Josephus considered the Septuagint on equal standing with the Hebrew text.[11][36]*Manuscripts of the Septuagint have been found among the*Qumran Scrolls*as part of the Dead Sea...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

No I am welcoming argument, I admit when I stand corrected, if you can change my mind of the point I make in post 75 that the NT favors the Septuagint based Hebrew Text rather than the Masoretic based Hebrew text then I'll reconsider and accept the Masoretic (without "apocryphal" writings)...

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

I'm sorry but that's not what historical documents suggest. The fact that these books were not only translated from Hebrew but were in full circulation and without any controversy suggest that for a good period of time they were accepted as scripture long after the churches were established...

Is also the case with open borders, despite if migrants have a criminal record or not, let's invite them all in with a clean slate or you are racist :/

The Apocrypha: Does it belong in the Bible?

But according to the greek translation it was canon.
