In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

If my grandpa died at 84, and I died at 35, you would not say I died “old and full of years.” Abraham was less than half the age of Heber. Heber died at 464. Abraham died at 175. Half of 464 is 232. Abraham wasn’t even that old. But he died Old and FULL of years???

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

I don’t think Athanasius commented on the genealogies of Genesis 11. So there’s no way for me to agree or disagree with him on that point. As for Athanasius’ list of canonical books, it would be difficult for me to accept his list, since he excludes Esther and calls it non-canonical. I really...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Actually it has nothing to do with incredulity. But rather, it has to do with the fact that the Bible is telling us that 175 was an old age for men living in Abraham’s generation. If there were 460 year-old men living at the time of Abraham’s death, then it would not be a true statement that...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Exactly. Augustine wasn’t even born yet. He wasn’t at the Council of Nicaea. He couldn’t be. Ask yourself if it makes sense if Abraham was “old and full of years” at 175 while Heber is still living at 460. The timeline in the Septuagint makes a lot more sense. Even the Samaritan Bible and...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

I find it interesting that you prefer Augustine, who did NOT attend the Council of Nicaea, but you reject Eusebius who DID attend the Council of Nicaea. I tend to think that Eusebius probably had a better grasp on what the early church fathers at the Council of Nicaea believed, since…HE WAS THERE.

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

How do you suppose that Abraham was “old and full of years” at 175 while his great great great great grandfather Heber was still chugging away at 460?

Clearing the Rubble Heap Between Jew and Gentile

One thing that I find to be really fascinating is that God chose to reach the Gentiles through a Bible translation that the Jews had made.

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

And yet, Josephus says that his Hebrew text included the extra 100 years on 6 generations.

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Latin ones? Ok, well the eastern GREEK Orthodox also accept the books of the Maccabees. What’s your point? Why don’t we get back to the original question? How to Apocryphal books point to Christ? Like The ones in the King James. Any ideas?

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Wow. That’s a lot. Not exactly related to the topic of this thread. I don’t really get into Catholic apologetics. But I might check it out. Thanks.

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Good question! Thanks for asking. I think there is a HUGE difference between the Catholic Church of the 1500’s, and the Catholic church from 1,000 years earlier in the 300’s. These early church councils in the 4th century decided our New Testament. Why shouldn’t they also decide our Old...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

I don’t think Eusebius is claiming to have access to older, accurate Hebrew texts. But rather, he’s claiming that the church in his time BELIEVED that the Septuagint was translated from older, accurate Hebrew texts. That’s why he defends the Septuagint’s inclusion of the extra 650 years in...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Daniel 9 clearly prophesies about the coming Messiah. Daniel 8 prophesies about the Maccabees. Maybe the question we SHOULD be asking is, “Why is one important and the other isn’t?”

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

No, I’m not Catholic. Never have been. Never will be. I disagree STRONGLY with many beliefs in the Catholic Church. Like, Mary was a virgin her whole life? Church leaders can’t get married? Uh, Paul said they could get married…to one wife. So no, I have no intentions of joining Catholicism...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Yes, I agree with that. But we don’t just take books out of the Bible just because we don’t know at the moment how they point to Christ. It really does seem to me that this history must be included in our Bibles. I felt that even before reading Maccabees. And then to find out that the early...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

In Eusebius’ Chronicon, he compared the Hebrew and Greek in the genealogy in Genesis 11. He knew the difference between the numbers, how there’s a 650 year difference. He said that the Hebrew is untrustworthy and unreliable, and said that the Greek Septuagint is translated from old and accurate...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

Except that they included it in the Bible and called it divine, canonical scripture. Rome, Hippo, and Carthage. Look up those councils. And there’s lots of other things in the Old Testament that I don’t exactly know how they point to Christ. Were you even listening???

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

One thing that really stands out to me about the apocrypha is this: I could never understand Daniel 8. Even after 20 years of attending church events regularly, and reading through the Bible multiple times, and I’ve still never understood Daniel 8. But one day I watched a bunch of...

In what ways does the Apocrypha point to Jesus as Savior?

How do you know the Jews never did? Just because the unbelieving Jews today SAY that they never did? Did you know there are Jews today in Israel who are trying to get Tobit back in to the canon of scripture? It seems to me that the only logical way for the early church to have accepted these...
