    It's still probably unusual for ppl to go ahead and get inked up before having first gotten some earrings pierced in, though. For a lot of ppl, the earrings are a kind of expected first stage that is gone through before the ink. There's no need for anyone necessarily to go on to the ink stage...

    It was a bit more minimalist in those days, I guess! :) Today, at 18/19 they often get a tattoo; having already gotten a couple of pairs of ear piercings by then, probably. It's still a matter of everyone being different, though.

    It's quite widespread for younger men to do it now, not least adolescents. But you're well past that stage.

    This is always an option; but it's known that in the long run it hurts less to go ahead and have them pierced, than it does to keep wearing clip ons for any significant length of time. Like, getting the piercing over and done with.
