The second commandment prescribes respect for the Lord's name. Like the first commandment, it belongs to the virtue of religion and more particularly it governs our use of speech in sacred matters.

Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him; he reveals himself to them in his personal mystery. the gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy. "The Lord's name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it.[SUP]Zech 2:13; Ps 29:2; 96:2; 113:1-2.[/SUP]

(Exo 20:1-3) The first commandment: no other gods before Me.
(Exo 20:4-6) The second commandment: You shall not make for yourself any carved image … you shall not bow down to them.
(Exo 20:7) The third commandment: You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

Technically, this is the third commandment, but still worth talking about.

Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain."

Includes:
profanity (using the name of God in blasphemy and cursing)
frivolity (using the name of God in a superficial, stupid way)
hypocrisy (claiming the name of God and acting in a way that disgraces Him)

Included in the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9) "Hallowed be Your name".

Leviticus 24:16 "anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death"
(Just in case there was any doubt that God was really serious about this 'name' thing.)

Deuteronomy 28:10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you.
(Some day ... )

Deuteronomy 32:3 I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
(An honor we have now!)

Psalm 116:13. I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
(We have even more reason to hold the name of the Lord in high esteem.)

Acts 2:21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
(Is there any name more worthy of being treated with reverence and respect? Is there any other name by which men may be saved?)

Acts 19:17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.
(May our lives also bring high honor to the name of the Lord Jesus.)

1 Corinthians 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
(We have not only more reason to hold the name of the Lord in esteem, but we have greater resources to empower us to do so.)

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(We are not merely to hold His Name in high esteem with our lips, but we are to hold His Name in high esteem with our lives.)

atpollard, I number them differently. For me the commandments are these
I am the LORD thy God which brought thee out of the land of Egypt the house of bondage. Thou shalt have therefore none other gods in my presence.
  • Thou shalt make thee no graven image of any manner likeness that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water beneath the earth. Thou shalt neither bow thyself unto them nor serve them, for I the LORD thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the wickedness of the fathers upon the children, even in the third and the fourth generation, among them that hate me: and show mercy upon thousands among them that love me and keep my commandments.
  • Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain.
  • Keep the Sabbath day that thou sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour and do all that thou hast to do, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God; thou shalt do no manner work: neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy servant, nor thy maid, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor the stranger that is within thy city, that thy servant and thy maid may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and how that the LORD God brought thee out thence with a mighty hand and a stretched out arm. For which cause the LORD thy God commandeth thee to keep the Sabbath day.
  • Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: that thou mayest prolong thy days, and that it may go well with thee on the land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
  • Thou shalt not kill.
  • Thou shalt not break wedlock.
  • Thou shalt not steal.
  • Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
  • Thou shalt not lust after thy neighbour's wife.
  • Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, field, servant, maid, ox, ass nor ought that is thy neighbour's.
Deuteronomy 5:6-21

I understand now why they don't use His Name or only use the consonants.

Thank God we are SAVED. By God's grace. Through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. His FINISHED work on the cross, His resurrection from the grave.
Blessed be the name of the Lord! Thank you, God our Saviour Jesus!

Then you may not have pics of people or animals either. In Israel some get furious if you try to make a pic of them.

Actually that is incorrect, the commandment given makes no mention of animals unless you intend to bow down and worship them as the golden calf incident as the Israelite nation performed.

Another look at the Heidelberg Catechism states Q. 97.*Are images then not at all to be made?

A.*God neither can, nor may be represented by any means:a*but as to creatures; though they may be represented, yet God forbids to make, or have any resemblance of them, either in order to worship them or to serve God by them.b

"Unauthorized images of Christ add nothing beneficial to this religion of faith, and serve only to tempt the faithful to take their minds off “things above” (Colossians 3:2) and focus on the creations of human hands. *Such images tempt us to idolatry, the very thing we are to guard ourselves against (1 John 5:21)"Joe Vusich

Correct.. Now with the historical information given from the Heidelberg Catechism and the Westminster Standards and the last article how do you reconcile that to make images of Christ relevant to the passages of Scripture shown as proof text and what the church holds to?... If you can explain from the information given and any errors found would be helpful for your stance.

I've never seen "The third command reads" in any bible :)

For me the commandments are these
I am the LORD thy God which brought thee out of the land of Egypt the house of bondage.
  • Thou shalt have therefore none other gods in my presence. Thou shalt make thee no graven image of any manner likeness that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water beneath the earth. Thou shalt neither bow thyself unto them nor serve them, for I the LORD thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the wickedness of the fathers upon the children, even in the third and the fourth generation, among them that hate me: and show mercy upon thousands among them that love me and keep my commandments.
