What makes a person a saint and makes a person a Saint?

I was under the impression, and now correct me if I'm wrong on this, that the capitalized Saints are the dearly departed who were among the faithful and the plain old saints are the rest of us living who trust in our Lord Jesus as Savior.

Catholics use 'saint' to denote a canonised saint. Saints (with or without capital S) refers either to canonised saints or to all the saints in heaven. Catholics rarely use 'saints' to refer to people living on earth.
