Be holy (perfect) as the Lord is holy (perfect) [SUP](Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18; Matthew 5:38-48)[/SUP]. Within these passages can be traced the development of Israel’s ethical standard and its subsequent reinterpretation by Jesus as well as its implications for the early Christian community[SUP] (1 Corinthians 3:16-23)[/SUP].

Yup. The "bar" is to be morally perfect - to the same extent as God Himself. When one has achieved that, they've attained the min. requirement.

I think to any honest and rational person, it's extremely unlikely we'll EVER attain that (even for Bhakti Hindus who beleive the Divine always gives to us more than sufficient empowering to achieve that - if we but will "tap" all that is available to us). IF any achieved absolute perfection, we'd likely notice - but how of 7.4 billion people currently on the planet, none seems to qualify, none seems to always, perfect "hit the mark" all seem to miss the mark ("sin").

Matthew 5:48, "You must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

1 Peter 1:16, "You must be holy even as God in heaven is holy."

John 15:12, "Love all people just as I (Jesus) first loved you."

Ephesians 4:32, "forgiving one another, just as God in Christ first forgave you."

First John 2:6, "Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."

Philippians 2:5, "You must have the same attitude that Christ did."

The word "sin" literally means "to miss the mark." In ancient Greece, if an archer missed the target, the therefore "sinned" because he missed the mark, missed the target. The Bible says "ALL fall short." IF you have absolutely, perfectly, divinely, 24/7 "hit" all the targets above, then you are obedient, sinless, holy. Otherwise...... So, what God says below is simply the undeniable reality....

Psalm 51:5 "I was sinful at birth"

Genesis 8:21, "Every inclination of man's heart is evil from childhood."

Romans 5:12, "Sin entered the world through one man's sin, and death through sin, and therefore death came to all men for all have sinned."

First John 3:4, "Sin is lawlessness"

Romans 3:12, "There is no one who does good, not even one."

Mark 10:18, "There is none who is good but God exclusively."

First John 1:10, "If we claim we have no sin, we make God a liar and His word is not in us."

Jesus said to his disciples:
"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses
that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you,
whoever is angry with brother
will be liable to judgment.

"You have heard that it was said,
You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

"Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
Do not take a false oath,
but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all.
Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,'and your 'No' mean 'No.'
Anything more is from the evil one." [SUP]Matt 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37[/SUP]

The Old Adam in me is sinful. The New Adam (because of faith in the Savior) is holy.

EXACTLY!!!! So, if you insist on looking in the mirror for the reason for your getting into heaven (and thus reject Christianity) then it's simple: Just be a WHOLE LOT better than the Pharisees (who lived as righteous of a life as humanly possible) and be equal to God - then you won't need forgiveness or reconciliation or justification and salvation - and thus won't need Christ: you can look in the mirror at self rather than looking at the Cross to Christ. Yes, you're right, my Catholic friend: the Law can make for salvation but only if you keep it. 24/7. In thought, word and deed. In attitude and life. From conception to death. Exactly like Jesus. Exactly like God. If you achieve that, you'll be the only mere human to do so (joining with Jesus who of course was not just man but also fully God). Good luck!

Learning about the proper distinction between law and gospel freed me up spiritually and emotionally from trying to attain the impossible and created an attitude of gratitude that resulted in an increased passion for sharing the Gospel and kindness for others. Confounding law and Gospel or as Pastor Fisk coined it 'Glawspel' only served to give me a spirit of condemnation and actually sucked the inspiration right out of me.

So well said and inspiring. It's an easy trap I find myself falling into at times myself. Being alone, no wife or kids, I have neither the person here to encourage me, nor the distractions in life that can actually help avoid the trap of depression and then condemnation over feeling useless or purposeless, and that can lead to the performance-based sanctification the enemy would have us weighted down by. That in turn leads to a 'what's the use who cares Im no good give up' attitude the enemy ALSO whispers to us.

Neither of them is the truth, of course. We're neither saved by nor kept by our works or performance, but by God's grace through and through.
It's good to have brothers and sisters, even online if it's not in person, to remind and encourage us of God's grace and love and keeping. Thank you.
(Glawspel ... Lol ... pretty good)

We have to remember too that the Word says this.

1 John 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is so are we in this world.

How is this? We are hid in Him.

Colossians 3:3For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

So we are holy because He is holy, for we are in Him.

I am holy already, I'm holier than thou.
To be holy means to be seperated and I'm very seperated. Anyone who tries to talk to me can get a growl.

Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.

It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

Doesn't this verse say it all, our righteousness is because of Him, our holiness is because of Him and our redemption is because of Him, and I believe that is so no man can boast. That verse is 1 Corinthians 1:30

Yes, my Catholic friend, it's nice to be nice.

Yes, my Catholic friend, if you are as morally perfect as God is...... as holy as God is..... with the identical love as Jesus on the Cross.... with a life equal to Christ's..... with an attitude identical to Jesus'........ in thought, word and deed..... in what is done and not done.... 24/7...... from conception to death.....then yes, my Catholic friend, one can look to the Law for justification and one can do as we often see Catholics do: make Christ small and irrelevant, make self as big as possible..... one can boast about how wonderfully goody-goody self is and how disgustingly bad everyone else is. But friend, the problem is with the "if."

Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy.' If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile.
