It would seem to me that if someone wanted population control they would want to force people to get fixed not kill the people who could no longer reproduce, anyway.

I will say this on that issue and this is coming from someone who is disabled, suspects she will have a shorter lifespan and has within the past six months ( five months ago today, actually lost her 53 year old father to cancer, however, while I do NOT support just killing people because they are "non-productive" I DO support adults (including family) if the person can no longer make decisions for themselves to be able to decide when treatment is no longer worth it; when being kept alive just because they do not want to die do not want their family to die is not a good use of resources. I am refering here to those who are living on a machine, and would not be able to live otherwise.

I suspect the shorter life span due to a family history of certain health problem AND more importantly the fact that at just 24 I already have " life without parole" health issues, more than likely.

I have no problem with quality of life decisions in terms of those who are beyond making their own decisions although a living will takes care of that problem.

Problem is not all people have one. I need to get one. I was going to when dad was on Hospice, but he passed away sooner than we thought he would and only lasted 12 days on there.

If you want population control (or social control, or major social change) you do it so gradually only a few realise what is happening, and they are sufficiently few in number they can be written off as conspiracy theorists.

It seems to me that to allow the economically unproductive to reproduce in greater numbers than the economically productive results in the unproductive representing a slowly increasing proportion of society. When everyone has a vote it's easy to see that once the economically unproductive reach a certain mass any government that promises enough free stuff can pretty much assure its ongoing governance.

Looking around it's clear that "divide and conquer" works very well as a tactic against the people. We see the old and young set against each other, different races set against each other, men and women set against each other, left-wingers and right-wingers set against each other, and all the while those who allegedly represent We The People get to feather their own nests at our expense.

I doubt that very much. I would say the powers that be don't want thinkers, they want a populace that is easy to control.

Give the masses their bread and circuses and they won't stop to think about what is being done to them until it's too late. Even now there's the increasing push for trivia and pointless wastes of time that keep people stupid. Most things are reduced to soundbite arguments so people can just recite their preferred one-liner rather than thinking about the issues in any depth. Tub thumping and rabble rousing beat serious discussion, and if you can just have your opponents shouted down by the loyal rent-a-gob types you can avoid serious discussion completely.

Why not make people WORK for that bread? It cannot be free.

If you want the people to depend on government you need to give them just enough to get by, giving them a sufficient disincentive to work for themselves, make an effort to better themselves, or challenge the status quo. Keep them too poor and they'll cause trouble, give them too much and they'll have enough to put some by and break the dependence, but give them just enough to be poor yet tolerable and the chances are they won't do much about it.

I'm sure some would like to see mass terminations, I'm just thinking of something maybe more mainstream and looking at what I see for myself.

It's possible, if it does come I wonder whether it would be an active process of mass extermination or a more passive process where food and energy became ever-scarcer so people would starve or freeze, with the associated local battles over scarce resources.

That's awfully... far-fetched.

It's like the argument about 'people coming to get mah guns'. It'd be an undertaking involving hundreds of thousands at the very least in a country of 300 million. It's not like people wouldn't find out immediately and put a stop to it.

Banks shutting down in this country was far fetched till it actually happened. Troops being used as policemen was far fetched till it happened. Troops training to control cities was also far fetched till it happened. And there are many other things that appeared to be far fetched.
