When one prays to God Father forgive me for I have sinned most grievously in the matter of <slander, greed, lust, etcetera>. one can expect with confidence that God hears you and forgives you whenever your confession is sincere and whenever you truly wish to and intend to turn away from the sins you've confessed but how do you feel about yourself after you make your confession to God?

Would you like to hear the words I absolve you from your sins, go and sin no more?

How do I feel about my private confession? I know my sins were forgiven at the cross but sometimes there is that little extra relief to have another person confirm it and say my sins are forgiven (and that's because they WERE! at the cross).

To hear "I absolve you"? No. That's still a bit of a theological stuck point for me. Not that I don't understand it, or the 'biblical basis' that's proffered for the practice, but I still remain in the camp that would argue Christ is the only one to absolve us of sin. One practice in the Presbyterian church was to offer assurance of Christ's forgiveness, rather than absolution, which is closer to where I stand on the topic. However, it's not a deal-breaker for me. It would just be an area of disagreement.

No because I don't even know what absolve is.

1 John 1:9New King James Version (NKJV)

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Absolve means declare (someone) free from guilt, obligation, or punishment. "the pardon absolved them of any crimes"
