Is it possible to be consistently good in public for the sake of others?

Being nice is not considered ordinary because many people (dare I say most) are not nice very often. That makes it uncommon to find a person who is nice (good may be better suited to a theological conversation since 'nice' has a negative connotation with some) all the time.

But in public most people I meet are always nice. They may growl at their partner at home maybe.

Define nice then if you find it so not ordinary?

I think of nice as being cordial and pleasant.

Interesting isn't it how strangers on the street can be nice but some are indifferent and they are not as noticed because they hurry on with their own matters while ignoring you.

Except when you're in their way.
Niceness in traffic is extraordinary.

There is a difference in being polite, and being genuinely kind.

Peace

Yes, but they are genuinely kind. Politeness for the sake of being polite is rare in Holland. It's easy to be kind if you don't have a real deep relationship. Noone bothers you, why not be kind? If I would steal their job they'd be less kind lol.

My mother was always nice and kind, also at home. Never saw her angry.
No wonder, she let my dad do the raising.
He could always yell and bark if we didn't listen.

Nice is nice.
I think people can be nice...... no doubt a whole lot nicer than we are. And while the Christian may have an advantage here, frankly I don't see that that reveals itself particularly (some of the 'nicest' people I know are not Christians). I believe that nice is nice - and should be strongly encourage - especially for the one we see in the mirror.

On the other hand, "nice" is not righteous. "Nice" is a totally outward thing as it can be observed. It has to do with our relation to others (Luther called this "justification with MAN"). Sadly, it CAN actually hinder our relationship to God (I'm not say it necessary DOES only that it CAN) as people become as the Pharisees - good looking on the outside, rotten on the inside - filled with egoism, self-sufficieny. I think of Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector where the Pharisee was the outwardly "holy" man who ends up in HELL, not justified with GOD... and the horrible Tax Collector ends up in HEAVEN, justified with God.

Let's say I have cancer. But I have no outward symptoms of such, no way that anyone noticed that. Outwardly, I APPEAR as healthy as can be. That actually can be a very dangerous thing - I can end up dying of something that might have been curable had it been obvious. Perhaps better is the one whose cancer immediately is apparent to all - so that he goes to the Great Physician? Remember.... it was the sinners, the tax collectors, the prostitutes who came to Jesus while the Pharisees opposed Him. Again, I wouldn't cast this in any absolute or "always" sense.

My mother claims that she's "surface nice" lol.

She notes that one of God's greatest gifts is our INABILITY to read minds. This permits us to have friends.

While she IS one of the "nicest" people I know..... she's probably being truthful. :)

Getting in the way does appear to make a lot of people angry.

Even God got angry in the bible. Does that make Him not nice?

Possibly, if you're on the receiving end it might make you think he's not nice.

Instead of seeing how deserving we are of His anger we accuse Him of not being nice? tsk tsk

When one is on the receiving end ... many a Christian has said it is unfair, mean, and many other harsher things.

It is a more effective way to get people to pray than: come on people we really should pray.

Oh LOL one guy at christian chat, my he was ... and then he said: Jesus also used a whip, so his way of posting was right. He thought I was a transgender because I thought those people may also go to the toilet somewhere. He told me to convert me from my transgenderism and stop living a lie LOL. Oh I guess I made a sarcastic comment to him, that was it. He said: are you transgender, while I had been posting there for months, so I said yes. He had no sense of humor.
