Mine is old but my my husband is an IT guy so we've fiddled with it to make it last longer. Once my daughter graduates I'm buying myself a new laptop :)

I'd buy a new one if I saw one that looked like a good deal but so far my PC seems to be as good as the new ones so there's no reason to buy another yet.

my idea of a perfect pc is ... at least 4GB ram, 500GB hard drive, backlit keyboard, touchscreen, resolution over 1300, 13.5 screen, and! is under 299.99. sounds like a great deal -if i can find one. we have a bestbuy and a officemax. and i refuse to purchase online due to security issues. guess iam limited lol

Mine is an i7 with 8 GB RAM and 1 GB HDD and a good graphics card ... I am not sure that a new PC would be any better and mine is 4.3 years old now

You'd love mine.

1TB hard drive, 16GB of memory, quad-core Intel i7 with hyperthreading (so it's effectively an 8-core machine), 15" screen, 1920x1080 resolution. It's got a hefty NVidia GeForce graphics card in it too. This thing processes 150MB TIFF files faster than its predecessor handled 20MB files. It really is a beast. The power supply alone is rated at something like 19V and 10A ( the power supply for my laptop is bigger and heavier than my wife's old Asus Eee)

Except for the price. It was, er, a little more than $300.

Truth be told except for the touchscreen issue the kind of machine you're describing sounds like something you should be able to get used fairly cheaply, especially if you're willing to work with a desktop. If you're really worried about buying online why not get a prepaid visa card and just load it with the money for whatever you're wanting to buy?

Mine is about 6 years old. It's a refurbished one, given that a repair shop destroyed my old one when I took it in for a new screen last month... :/

Did they give it to you in compensation?

Yes, but thinking back on it, I never should have given them a cent. I was rather naive and left the place without checking the old one until I got home. Otherwise, they'd have a broken computer and I'd have found something new.

Surely not something new for something old, I can understand a replacement like for like but one that works instead of being broken. I imagine that for good customer relations they would have not charged you anything.

How do you destroy a machine when replacing the screen?

The first time I ever attempted a screen repair on a laptop the only thing I did wrong was missed a single screw when reassembling it. I never did figure out where it should have gone, the laptop worked fine with its new screen so I just chucked the spare screw in my spare parts box.

A skewed keyboard, superglue residue all over the place, a non-functioning touch-pad, and dings all over the place where they tried to pry the thing open with a screwdriver. However, the screen worked quite well! :D
