I think I saw a bobcat?

I was doing my morning hike and I THINK I saw a bobcat? It wasn't a dog. It wasn't a deer because when I see them I immediately think DOG. It was bigger than your average house cat and moved like a feline. It happened so quickly that there was no way I could snap a pic of it. I'm still sort of stunned and have been looking up photos of bobcats on the internet and they are in my area sometimes. I didn't see the usual markings though that are on the photos but then again I had sunglasses on and it wasn't up close.

I guess you were lucky to even get a glimpse of it. Typically they hear us first and we don't even know they were ever even there.

I don't know much about them!! I grew up in the Chicagoland area and you didn't see such things! LOL

Whatever I saw didn't even look at me, which is why I know it wasn't a deer. Deer will always take a moment or two to consider their decision, which is always to flee but they have to ponder it for a few moments before taking action. This thing heard me coming around a corner (I was walking on a rocky part of the trail going uphill) and took off. It was graceful like a cat but much larger (longer legs) than a house cat.

I have no idea what other animal this could have been?

We've lived along a mountain range most of my life and have never personally say any predators. Mainly only the typical deer and occasional skunk. There are occasional sightings of bear and mountain lions but it's few and far between. I did stay one night at the monastery which is very isolated and I did hear a coyote or two.

When I do go hiking I try to remember to make noise so I don't surprise an animal and cause it to think it needs to protect itself. I especially try to scuff my feet while walking to give the rattle snakes a heads up which is probably my biggest concern.

That's in the Sydney area and nowhere else. Here in sunny Perth we have no nasty critters

Yes, we have a lot of predators around. It's scary moving to a new location and having to learn which things are poisonous, dangerous, or just plain evil.

At the Jacksonville zoo, they have an exhibit that invites you in to take a look at the world's most dangerous predator...when you enter they tell you to look up, and there is a mirror on the ceiling. :birgits_giggle:

coyotes have been wandering into developed areas more but still rare to see one
